This low point in Clinch Mountain is one of three gaps in the Appalachian Mountains that defined the most direct route from the Ohio Valley to the Holston and Watauga Valleys. Cumberland Gap lay on the western leg of The Great Warrior’s Path; Moccasin Gap lay near The Great Warrior’s Path in the east; in between was Kane Gap in Powell Mountain. A network of trails had been developed by the eastern Indians of the North American continent. The Indians called the trail system Athawominee. Settlers translated it as The Great Warrior’s Path.
