Knitting patterns for mosaic blankets have one thing in common. They seem complicated but are in fact quite easy to work on.

The break down of a mosaic crochet graph pattern. Here you will see 3 different patterns that have an equal number of repeats. I specifically designed this pattern for a beginner to use, but it is also an easy pattern for those who are more advanced. When I design a mosaic graph I place red lines around the pattern repeat. This means that what is in the red lines is repeated over and over for the width of your pattern. My measurements may be different to yours as we all have different tension and it will also differ in measurements depending on the yarn ply. I was using 10 ply/Aran/Medium Worsted and used a 4mm hook. But the calculations will work with all types of yarn, hook and tension. Using this pattern as an example, it has a 9 stitch repeat. Lets say we want to make a scarf and the 9 st's measure approx 3 inches wide and we want our scarf to be about 15 inches wide. We just need to figure out how many 3's go into 15 and that is 5. So we are going to repeat our 9 st pattern 5 times, which is 45 st's. There will also always be a beginning st and ending st in every pattern, commonly referred to as a ss (side stitch). So we will start our scarf with 47 chains and 1 more for a turning chain on our very first row. This is pattern 1 If I wanted to make a throw and the standard measurement for one of those is 52 inches wide, I need to find out how many 3 inches are in 52 inches wide. Google tells me it is 17.3333333. Now I know I have to repeat the 9 st's 17 times and that = 153 st's. So that is the width, but what about the height? The throw is approx 60 inches in height, I can measure as I make it and stop at around that height of my choice, or follow the more in depth instructions below. This is pattern 2 Now with this graph above, we know it is 3 inches wide, but it is higher than the first part of the pattern. To get an estimate of the height we can measure the first pattern st's that we made. You will need to measure the dc's and when I measured only 1 of my dc's it came in just under 1 inch, now that will not be an accurate way to measure, so I measured the rows until I got a more accurate measurement and that just happened to be 5 rows high coming in at 3 inches high. So now we know that 5 rows high is 3 inches high. To get to my 60 inches in height, I need to find out how many 3 inches are in 60 inches and that = 20 times. So if I do 20 times 5 rows I am looking at 100 rows high, which measures our 60 inches in height. This is pattern 3 The graph above is the third pattern, I will now show you the pattern in it's large form below. It looks high enough, but not wide enough in the graph, but now you know that you just have to repeat the pattern inside the red lines 17 times to make it wide enough for your throw. Now I will show you the entire graph with the markings for the mosaic crochet technique and the red lines for the repeat. Once you have mastered reading a graph for mosaic crochet, you can get away with using only this graph below. I will now give you the written instructions for the pattern. Don't forget you can copy and paste to a word document and click on the graph pictures and save them. Dus volop inspiratie.
I designed this mosaic crochet graph a little while back and have been itching to make it up. I wrote the pattern as I was making it off the graph and am very pleased to share it with you. Pattern 1 reminds me a little of lanterns and the in between pattern reminds me of trellis, so that's how I got the name. I think it's a pretty design and it is easy to follow, it is so nice to have the symmetry between both patterns as you can make it as big or as small as you like. In the picture below I have given you some measurements, but these are specific to me when we speak of tension, I'm a medium tension gal'. But it gives you an all round estimate of the sizing and you can plan away to make your own Mosaic Lantern Trellis. Pattern includes written and graph instructions. Experience needed: single row (cut n tie) mosaic crochet technique. Materials: 10 ply. worsted weight and a 4 mm (g) hook. (Or materials of your choice) The written instructions are in US terms. SS = side stitch, the beginning ss is a regular sc and the end ss is a sc worked in between the legs of the previous sc, this avoids slanting. Unless stated other wise, all sc's are worked into the back loop Unless stated other wise, all dc's are worked into the front loop of the st that is 2 rows below the row that you are now making. In the pattern, I have written repeat 10 times, but that is just an example of repeats, in my sample I only repeated the pattern sequence 7 times. Don't forget that you can copy and paste the pattern to your word document The number of chains is for a repeat of 10. ie: 10x16=160 + 1 ss + 1 ss = 162 The 16 is the number of st's per 1 pattern sequence. To repeat pattern 6 times it would be 6x16=96 + 1 ss + 1 ss = 98 To repeat pattern 8 times it would be 8x16=128 + 1 ss + 1 ss = 130 To repeat pattern 12 times it would be 12x16=192 + 1 ss + 1 ss = 194 All odd numbered rows are the back ground color. All even numbered rows are the pattern color. To Begin, using back ground color. Chain 162 + 1 ch for turning, work 2 rows of regular sc, ch 1 and turn, we are now going to work the single row (cut and tie) mosaic pattern. Row 1. ss, sc across to last st, ss Row 2. ss, sc across to last st, ss Row 3. ss, (dc x 6, sc, dc x 9), repeat for a total of 10 times, ss. 162 st's Row 4. ss, (sc x 6, dc, sc x 9), repeat for a total of 10 times, ss. 162 st's Row 5. repeat row 3 Row 6. repeat row 4 Row 7. ss, (dc x 4, sc x 5, dc x 7), repeat for a total of 10 times, ss. A Very Rainbow Blanket is here! Please, find a free pattern below. For my colorful version I used a Scheepjes Metropolis pack with 80 x 10g mini skeins. Pattern Notes You can either follow the chart or written instructions. Use one color for 2 rows unless otherwise instructed and change color at the end of the row in last yo of the last st. Don’t cut the yarn, carry it up to next row. You’ll have floats of yarn along one edge. Make sure they don’t pull or are too loose. When one color (A or B) is over, attach next one from the list below: Yarn A: 80, 69, 1, 2, 3, 53, 49, 50, 54, 55, 6, 56, 15, 5, 4, 17, 70, 7, 10, 13, 12, 11, 9, 14, 18, 19, 23, 21, 22, 20, 16, 26, 27, 28, 29, 31, 32, 79. Yarn B: 35, 34, 39, 25, 73, 72, 68, 33, 48, 47, 77, 46, 76, 74, 75, 65, 64, 62, 42, 41, 57, 43, 58, 44, 45, 59, 51, 60, 52, 61, 67, 66, 63, 71, 24, 30, 78. How to Read the Chart Chart is read from bottom to top. Each row in chart represents two rows of same color. Odd rows are worked on the RS (1, 3, 5, etc) and are read from right to left. Even rows on WS (2, 4, 6, etc) are read back across from left to right. The first square of each row shows which color is used for 2 rows (1-2, 3-4, 5-6, etc). Each square of the chart shows 1 stitch or 1 skipped stitch. When squares of different color appear in the row, they should be skipped. So instead of working them, make the same number of chs as the number of skipped sts plus 1 ch. For 1 missed st you will have ch2. On RS rows, when you will crochet with a different color, you will make mdc in these skipped sts from three rows below. Mdc are only worked on RS rows and are always made in front of chains of previous rows, so the ch-sps are always skipped. On WS (even numbered rows) you will only make sc and chs. Please note that sc are made in sts of the previous row, and chs are made over chs. Check her video tutorial on YouTube. With RS facing you, attach black yarn with ss in any corner. Work with ss evenly around the entire blanket, join with ss in first ss. Continue to work around the blanket inserting hook under two lps of ss as foll: Ch1 (doesn’t count as a st), *(1sc, ch2, 1sc) in corner ss, 1sc in each ss to next corner; rep from * three more times, ss in first sc, fasten off. With WS facing you, attach black yarn in BL of ss in any corner and continue to work around the entire blanket inserting hook into BL of ss. Rep from * four times, join with ss in first sc, don’t fasten off and continue working with ss through top lps of both sc rnds joining them together. When the join is finished, fasten off and weave in all ends. Congratulations! Your Very Rainbow Blanket is now finished! This blanket, featuring a dragon on a book, can be crocheted using the interlocking or mosaic crochet technique.
Great Tits How about a lovely small project for a change. I love watching the birds in my garden and we have a large population of great tits that make me smile on a daily basis. I’ve created this pattern about a year and a half ago and have used it for cushion covers, laptop bags, etc… Now came the time to share it with you. This pattern includes charts (DC’s marked with X) and written instructions for potholders and coasters and a larger chart and written instructions for you to incorporate these cute little birds into any project. I made the potholders and coasters using Budgetyarn Cotton DK and also did some coasters in Phildar Coton 3. Exact yarn estimates are given in the pattern. For a double sided potholder in Budgetyarn Cotton DK you need just over half a skein for colour A and one skein + a bit for colour B. For a double sided coaster you will get two coasters out of one skein for colour A and one skein for colour B. You can use any yarn and corresponding hook size you like, but I do recommend using 100% cotton for potholders. Pattern is available in English with US crochet terms and Dutch and comes with an introduction to mosaic crochet and links to additional tutorials. Happy hooking!
