November 30, 1955: Billy Idol is born William Michael Albert Broad in Stanmore, Middlesex, England. English rocker William Broad, better known to the world as Billy Idol, was no less than the spiky-haired, bleach-blond, sneering face of the '80s. (sign up to follow by email) After seeing some success in the late '70s in the U.K. with his punk-pop outfit Generation X, Idol came to New York determined to launch a solo career, which might have crashed and burned if not for the timely intervention of MTV.
