I always knew of the mountains in the the northern part of Italy but I had no idea that most of country is so mountainous. My drive (which I include below) consisted of leaving Rome, traveling to the western coast of Abruzzo and then heading north through Umbria and Tuscany and finally to the eastern coast of La Spezia. I was shocked to find that most of the roads in Italy are extremely windy and pass through some of the most unbelievable scenery I have ever seen. What I love about the mountains is obviously the picturesque sweeping views, but most often you find the most crazy storms and cloud formations in theses high altitudes that make for unbelievable photos. This photo was taken right after driving through the Passo S. Leonardo in the Della Maiella National Park. I had been running from a storm when it finally caught up to me at the small medieval town of Pacentro. I took this photo standing on rail just over a 200 meter free fall as the trees below would have otherwise obstructed my view. The homeowners across the street were certainly amused by my acrobatic show.

These ski resorts have heights that are comparable to their Alpine neighbors to the north. Because of their proximity to the Adriatic ocean and the winter precipitation patterns they often receive more snow than the Alps. I feel that the Abruzzo region is often overlooked when people talk about Italy's most beautiful regions but I found this mountainous area of Italy to be one of my favorite when I was touring through the countryside.
