Our theme for this past week was APPLES! We introduced the apple theme by working with our short a sound and making the apple shape book with the short a pictures inside. Our centers were all apple themed also. They listened to the story Apples, Apples, Apples, and then played a game called “Rotten Apple”. This game had our vocabulary words on it. They drew a card and read the word on the card, If they knew the word they got to keep the card. If they drew a card with an apple with a worm in it, they had to call out “Rotten Apple!” and they lost all the cards they had collected. They had a lot of fun playing this game. This game was Rhyming with Johnny Appleseed. They found rhyming pairs of short a words. At this center they ordered numbered apples from least to greatest. Students drew cards with math facts on them and used counters to join sets to find the sum for the game Apple Addition. This center was geared towards handwriting. They copied a poem using their neatest handwriting using their lines and spaces and then illustrated the poem. During one of our desk jobs the students made a shape book called All About Apples. Labeling the parts of an apple was an art job we did during our center desk job. Another desk job during centers was making these torn apple trees. These are our “Happy Apple Men”! They are proud of their art jobs! We combined our apple theme with a few math lessons also. On the promethean we worked on ordering 2 numbers from least to greatest and then did 3 numbers and then 4 numbers in order from least to greatest. We also read a Dr. Seuss story Ten Apples Up on Top and then did a math activity on the promethean where the students were pictured with apples up on top. They had to figure out the combination of red and green apples “up on top”. After doing the activity on the promethean we went back to our desks and rolled red and green dice to make combinations of our own and put them in a book of our classmates pictures called “How Many Apples Up On Top"?” The last activity we did was read the story The Seasons of Arnold’s Apple Tree. We then painted our own seasons of an apple tree. As you can see this was a busy week of Apples, Apples, Apples!
No matter what your reasons are, you are the parents of an only child. You have one child and will not be having any more.
If you grew up mostly after Y2K, these will be your Legends of the Hidden Temple and Dunkaroos. In other news, I am a fossil.
William "Little Bill" Glover Jr. is the main character of the series. He is an energetic and imaginative 5-year-old boy. He was created by Bill Cosby, who based the character's personality on his younger self, as well as on his son Ennis. According to the show's executive producer, Janice Burgess, Little Bill is a fictionalized younger version of Cosby. Burgess described the character as "little Bill Cosby." The entire series is a semi-biographical representation of Cosby's childhood growing up

This weekend I finally made it to the Lauren Child exhibition at the Castle. Child is the illustrator of Charlie and Lola amongst other books, and the exhibition, although aimed at children is a must-see for anyone with an interest in children's book illustration. I visited with a friend and her two year old who was very excited at the prospect of running round Charlie and Lola's house and playing in their kitchen! I took a few photos inside, excuse the blurring - flash photography is frowned upon! It was fascinating to have a close look at some of the original artwork for various book spreads, and the different materials involved, including tin foil, wallpaper and magazine clippings. The exhibition also shows work by other illustrators she admires including Edward Gorey, Ronald Searle, Quentin Blake and Angela Barrett. Some sketchbooks were also on display which I enjoyed flicking through. One part of the display shows the work process that goes into designing a book, and the stages Child's work goes through from initial ideas to final print. Some items that served as inspirations in Child's work were also on show, including Snoopy hairslides, an orange telephone and a milk glass froma charity shop which have all featured in different stories. Pippi Longstocking For the Princess and the Pea, Child built real dollshouse scenes with cardboard and paper cutouts and then had them photographed to create a 3D layout (- you can see me in the mirror reflection to get a sense of scale!) The Castle Grounds in the sunshine It's only on for another week but I am urging any fellow Nottinghamites to have a wander round if they get chance!
