MFW: Learning God's Story 1st Grade Curriculum I'll be sharing the way I've organized our curriculum below. It's still a work in progress. Going through everything has gotten me very excited to begin this new chapter in our school year. We were all so excited when we receive our curriculum in the mail. Started organizing the curriculum by placing a tab for each week in the Teacher Manual and in the Student Workbook. Put all the student worksheets into page protectors for each week. It also has a tab to be used to move to which ever week we are, pretty to hold our place, same for the bible reader and notebook. In the teacher notebook I've placed some cursive worksheets and some extra practice worksheets for Kanani to use. Will continue using the Cursive Formation flashcards for more practice, I place each flashcard in a clear page protector also. Kanani will be practicing more sequence patterns with her sequence cards. I found these at one of our local thrift stores. Also included in the teacher notebook is a copy of the attendance chart, and the art pictures. I've placed each picture in its own page protector as well. We'll be using A to Z flashcards from our Kindergarten curriculum to continue to practice on her handwriting in our salt tray. Another thing in the teacher notebook is the pattern animals book, which I took apart and placed each page in its own page protector. We will also continue to use our Pattern Block set by Melissa & Doug. We'll practice our reading and spelling using word boards one (top) from Melissa & Doug and the other (bottom) from Classic Wood. I laminated the expanded form cards and the 100 chart, since I'm sure we will be using them a lot. The main reason I laminated the 100 chart is so she can practice writing her numbers over and over again. Place a tab in the math book to hold our place in the book, I like using tabs better than bookmarks. Bookmarks tend to fall out of the book easier. In the teacher manual the student was suppose to color the pictures as we reach that part of the timeline. Kanani is not to keen on coloring, she's always prefered to draw or paint her picture. Went ahead and colored each picture then I laminated the sheets for better durability and then placed them in a zipper pouch to keep them in till we need them. TOP LEFT PIC: Here is a look of our wall by CoCo cage's (Cock-a-tiel). There are two pocket holders (not sure if that is what they are called....lol). The red one has the ABC chart which I laminated, color chart (mostly for review), it also has some cards of her name for her to practice spelling out her name. The blue one has number cards from 1-120, great way for her to practice putting her numbers in order and great for skip counting. Next to that is the days of the weeks and weather cards which I found at Target. Under both of these is the 100 chart and the calendar that came with the curriculum. TOP RIGHT PIC: Has our reading chart and Bible book list. BOTTOM LEFT PIC: By Larry Boy's cage (Bearded Dragon) is our calendar and a book shelf that holds some board books, blocks, color jars, and sequence toy by Melissa & Doug. BOTTOM RIGHT PIC: In this book shelf we have our salt tray, some school supplies, bananagrams tiles, science materials, some of our sensory supplies, paint, kinetic sand, art supplies and abacus. It also hold all the materials that came with the deluxe curriculum. Here is a closer look of the microscope and test tubes we use. The top right picture is our box of "The Beginners Bible" cards. On our other shelf it holds two globes, the blue one talks about different parts of the world and animals in each part. I laminated our calendar which we went ahead and colored ahead. Kanani will move the clothes pin depending on which month we are on. Top right picture is what's next to the book shelf, which are some sensory bins (rainbow rice, rainbow pasta, moon sand, stamps, sensory tools, tissue paper pieces, and flash cards). On this shelf is all our curriculum materials: teacher workbook and notebook, student notebook, bible reader and bible reader notebook, all our science books, art book, devotion books, and much more. Found a blog of someone who has done MFW 1st grade before and they made memory versus cards plus worksheets for each week starting with week 3 and on. The link to her blog is Grafhaus Christian School there you can print out the versus and worksheets. This is our supple station: It holds all our art materials, school and office supplies, math activities, lace and trace boards, bingo games, geoboards, magnet activities, puzzles, small books, and many other buckets with different activities used mostly during quiet time. Top left picture is our kitchen area and on the wall is her "My magnetic responsibility chart" by Melissa & Doug. I had actually put it away and haven't used it in awhile, really thought she had out grown it. The other day she asked for me to please hang it up for her again. The top right picture are 3 bins: Left holds the kids dinosaurs, the middle one are wooden blocks, and the right one hold animal figures. Bottom two pictures is the easel with one side being a chalkboard and the other side being a magnetic dry erase board. This is in our hallway we call it our Geography wall. The top two show how it looks at an angle. Middle left picture is a poster showing where different animals live, middle right is a landscape poster. Bottom left picture is the U.S. placemat and Continent placemat, the bottom right is a closer look of our map. We use this wall a lot and the kids love identifying and looking for different places on the maps. I ordered a laminating machine this year since last year I paid more to get things laminated then if I would have bought my own laminator. Got to say I am very happy I made the decision to buy one. It has worked great so far. I ordered mine from the Wal-Mart website which they delivered to a nearby store so it was free shipping. Here is a look into some of the ways I've organized things for our next school year in 1st grade. We are all very excited about our next adventure with My Father's World. I'll be posting after finishing each week. As I finish each post I'll be updating this post with a link to each week completed which I'll place below. Welcome back to Toddler Idea Tuesdays! Sorry I haven't posted for a couple of weeks. We didn't have anything new to post and I couldn't find all the projects that I said I would share. And last week was our week off of school. We are back in gear and ready to share! Have you been busy with your young children? Last time I posted I promised that I would share finished art work from what we have been working on with My Father's World 1st grade. I wanted to have a craft to go with each unit so the younger ones could join in. Here are some of the fun crafts we have been making. Any links will lead you to where I found the craft if it was not my own idea. We made ant hills covered with fingerprint ants to go with our devotional story, "Ants, ants, ants." We made Geckos to go with "Disappearing Tails." These were supposed to be covered with bubble wrap to give it some texture but the children didn't want to make them that way for some reason. We made symmetrical butterflies to go with, "Monarch Miracle." For our science exploration on week 3 we took apart a rose. After our observations were done, we used the petals to make hearts for daddy. This is Harold's: We made Hand Print Monkeys in a Tree to go with "Monkey Business." We made Hand Print Frogs to go with "Eggs, Polliwogs and Frogs." We made shoe print sloths to go with "Three-Toed Patience." The memory verse for Week 6 is "Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones," so we made these Bubble Wrap Beehives. Now onto: Toddler Idea Tuesday Features This week's feature is from Excite and Explore. She has started a new Letter of the Week series with her little guy and has some really fun idea. In addition to her sensory pan, you will want to check out her ant snack and stamping craft. I would love to have you join in this week! What sort of activities do you do with your toddler? Do you have some favorite activities you would like to share? I invite you to link up below. I will be pinning posts on my Toddler Ideas board and I would love to feature some of the activities each week from what is linked up. Please know I may share a picture from your post and link back to it, along with sharing how we used your idea in our toddler time. By linking up you are giving me permission to use a picture from your post. I will ALWAYS give credit and link back. Additionally, if you choose to try out any of the ideas with your toddler, please make sure you give credit where credit is due. Linky will be open through Sunday night, to give me time to check out all the posts and get the Features organized.

Another great week using MFW Learning God's Story! We did a few art projects, made some yummy chipotle ranch, and read about several types of trees. Warning: This post contains affiliate links. That means if you use the link to buy something, we will be paid. This money goes to support my family. Memory Verse: Proverbs 21:23- "He who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from calamity." This verse was a great one for our whole family to focus on this week. We've had a lot happen recently, and it was a good reminder to watch what we say. Squirrely Girl and Miss Bear have continued to do well with the memorization, and are relating day to day life back to our memory verses and bible stories. It makes my heart happy whenever I hear them pray for God's help in these areas! We've also started doing a little something with our memory verses this week. I love the CM Scripture memory system, and we made our own simple version. You can read about it here. Language Arts: Squirrely Girl reading her previous phonics lessons. Squirrely Girl has continued with the MFW phonics. I thought it was odd that they included -ing, -ang, and -ung together, because I thought it would be confusing. She didn't seem to have any problems, though! Her handwriting has already improved dramatically the past 5 weeks. Miss Bear is working on her ABC handwriting sheets as well as number words sheets. I used a highlighter to make her a copywork sheet for this weeks memory verse, and I've already seen improvement in her handwriting as well. Math: This is week 2 of working numbers and counting. This was needed more for Miss Bear, but Squirrely Girl had a good review with larger numbers. She also used some leaves, rocks, and seeds we found on our nature walk to work on addition, which was great practice. Science: After reading the recommended reading for trees, we did several art projects, a failed science experiment, and read in our Fun with Nature about several species of trees. <br /> We've also continued to examine our beans that are sprouting. (We didn't soak them until Monday! We had a lot going on last week!) I'm not adding that stuff until we finish it, but Bubba has loved looking at the beans. Kids were all amazed to see the tiny plant starting to grow! Art: One of our art activities was these tree ring paintings. I put several shades of paint onto a plate, and the girls used their foam sponge brushes to get some paint. They then pressed the sponge onto their paper and twirled it around, giving the great tree ring effect. We all had a lot of fun with these! We also made these My Years in Tree Rings pages. We had talked about how trees grow a ring each year. We then made these pictures with a ring for each year they'd been alive, and things they thought were important for each year. Lastly, the kids made these tree crafts. All three of them love when I tape contact paper onto the sliding glass doors. This is something that even Bubba can mostly do himself. Handicrafts: Squirrely Girl started working on her first needlepoint project this week. You can find these projects at most craft stores, and I'm sure Amazon has them as well. How was your week? How do you like to incorporate art into the weeks lessons?

We also have stopped supplementing with First Language Lessons and just use the reading program in Teacher's Manual and phonic readers for Language Arts. First Language Lesson is good L.A. curriculum, but my boys were not reading yet so we needed to focus on phonics and the Manual and Workbook were plenty.

Welcome to our MFW 1st Grade Weekly Wrap-up (we are using the first edition)! If you haven't already, be sure to check out our daily school routine and curriculum here. Yesterday was my birthday! I'm so thankful to God for the 31 years he has given me, for my godly husband and children. I was excited to spend the day with my family. It was great end to the week! Here's what we did for MFW 1st Grade ~~Week 8~~ Bible: Our Proverbs for this week is Proverbs 12:22 ("The Lord detest lying lips, but he delights in men who are truthful"). We discussed that we are to always be truthful and do the right thing, and Ladybug copied the Proverbs on Day 2 of this week. This week Ladybug began reading in her Bible Reader and drawing in her Bible Notebook. Ladybug's Bible Reader For our Bible activity, we learned that BC stands for before Christ and AD means Anno Domini (Latin for years after Jesus was born). Grammar: This week we did not do much of the student workbook pages. Two of the days, we did the Bible Reader and Notebook. It was a nice change! Ladybug did learn long vowel i spelled igh (as in night), and long vowel i spelled y (as in why). Ladybug's workbook Math: We are using the Complete Book of Math (recommended by MFW). This week we focused on addition! Page from the Complete Book of Math Science: This week we discussed "The Beach" and "Waves". We would love to be on the beach right now, but that's not possible. So we brought the beach to our home! Ladybug and Buddy's grandmother collects seashells. She was happy to share her collection! Our Seashell Collection One afternoon, Ladybug and Buddy spent over an hour observing the shells. With a magnifying glass and a small flashlight in hand, they carefully looked at each shell. Ladybug mentioned how each shell is unique and different. What a great reminder that God creates us unique and in His own image! We used our Draw Write Now Book (Book 6: Animals and Habitats-On Land, Pond, River and Ocean) to look at animals who live on the beach. Our pet hermit crab, Grassy, got to "visit" the beach too! We also made our own ocean so we could observe waves. It was easy and fun! Just save a 2 liter bottle (or you could any size plastic bottle). Fill with a little water and add food coloring. Then add cooking oil. I used vegetable oil (any cooking oil should work). I filled the bottle with about 1/3 of cooking oil. It really doesn't take much. Here's what our "ocean" looked like. The dark blue is the water and light blue is the oil. Ladybug and Buddy added seashells to their ocean Most waves are made by the wind. When the wind blows harder, it pushes the ripples until they become waves. This was a fun, easy school week for us. We were all thankful for that. We even made a trip to a nearby river (since we learned about that last week), and we planted a few flowers! We learned that this River goes through several states and meets the Atlantic Ocean Ladybug loved planting flowers! And Strawberries! Buddy planted cucumbers! Seeing this picture brings happy tears and a grateful heart. Buddy asked to stroll Pumpkin after we planted flowers. He strolled Pumpkin a few times and when I looked over, he had stopped and bent down to give him a kiss. I am so thankful for the amazing responsibility we have to raise these boys to know God and make Him known. Have a Great Week!
MFW: LEARNING GOD'S STORY WEEK 30 This week we will learn about Jesus calling Matthew, the twelve apostles, farmer and his seeds, and the big storm. MFW LEARNING GOD'S STORY: WEEK 1 Welcome to our adventures in first grade using My Father's World Curriculum. We are excited for this new chapter in our lives after completing MFW: Kindergarten Curriculum. Can't wait to see what new adventures are in store for us. Kanani was super excited to finally start first grade. She has been asking me when were we going to start, but I need to some time to relax and organize. We took 3 weeks off between finishing Kindergarten to when we started first grade. BOOKS Some of the books we used this week BIBLE We began reviewing about Genesis 1:1 in the beginning. Here Kanani is showing me where on the globe we live and what her bible shows and tells about the beginning. She was able to tell me the story of how it all began till the 7th day of creation. I'm so glad she remembered everything. After we finish our devotional Kanani draws in her notebook what she learned and then explains her picture. This something she decided to do on her own. When we don't use "The Big book of Devotions" that came with the curriculum we use Veggie Tales Devos for girls. We start our day off with a devotion before we began our lesson. Trying to instill in Kanani to seek God first before starting her day, she loves her devotional. BIBLE VERSE Take a lesson from the ants, you lazybones. Learn from their ways and be wise! ~Proverbs 6:6 For the whole law can be summed up in this one command: "Love your neighbor as yourself." ~Galatians 5:14 Give your gifts in secret, who knows all secrets, will reward you. ~Matthew 6:4 WORKSHEETS Practicing writing the letters, which has gotten so much better. She doesn't really like to write her letter I pray as we continue she will begin to enjoy it more. To add to our language lessons I bought a Phonics and Reading workbook from Dollar Tree for more practice. Bought this cute booklet at the Dollar Tree. Kanani has always liked small books to practice her reading, I believe the bigger book overwhelm her right now. These come in handy and help boost her confidence in reading. Practicing the order of events She was so excited to have completed her alphabet scroll. Love the excitement on her face as she opens her scroll. MATH I printed out a several copies of the 120 chart to do several different games with it. Got them from The Stem Laboratory Blog. Printed them on card stock and then laminated them. Here I set up a card of the chart with dice and a dry erase marker. She would roll the dice and then look for the number on the chart and then circle the number. Once she completed the numbers 1-12 she wanted to do more searching, so I could call out random numbers which she in turn would circle. Great for identifying numbers. Worked with our pattern blocks, we've had the Melissa & Doug one for awhile and we all have enjoyed working with it. She also likes making her own patterns. We started working in the math book already due to how most of the beginning of the book is more of a review for her. She was doing Math U See in Kindergarten. Here she was working on sequence and what doesn't belong. Working on order and watched Leap Frog Math Circus. Love Leap Frog movies the kids really enjoy them and learn so much. Brought out some of the Popsicle sticks I had made awhile ago for Kanani to build shapes with. She made a pentagon and then made a door to go with it because its shaped like a house. Also made a musical triangle, such great imagination. ARTS & CRAFTS For this craft she got some cutting practice in by cutting the grass for our "Close to the ground craft". She then colored the bottom of the paper brown to represent the dirt and then glued the grass above the dirt. Then I painted her thumbprint to make ants, worm, snails, and slugs on the dirt. Got the idea from Multi Crea Center Blog. In the devotion, Fishy Friends, we learned about loving our neighbor as we love ourselves. Kanani wanted to draw a picture of several marine animals who are friends and always take care of one another. Either through baby-sitting, helping the other teach their babies to swim, and just being there for one another. She has such a big heart, love how she came up with this on her own. Kanani made popsicle stick book mark worms after learning about earth worms. They came out really cute. ACTIVITIES Start our days doing our devotion first, then the 100 chart, number of the day, days of the week, month, and weather. After we do the number of the day, weather, days of the week, Kanani likes to do the calendar. Set a try with her last name which is divided into by each letter, she had to match the letters and then I had her try to place the letters in the correct order without looking. Need to practice more with her, poor thing has a long last name. Made this cute caterpillar for Kanani last year of her last name. Brought it out again to make learning her last name fun. She almost there completing her last name correctly. Used our Leap Frog magnetic letters to place them in the correct order on her dry erase board. After completing several pages in her math book I set up a tray for her to complete the sequence I had started. She's always loved patterns and putting different objects in sequence or pattern. Since we are reviewing the letters I put together a bin of rainbow pasta with some alphabet foam letters in them. Kanani would match the letters on the paper, make the sound for the letters she would find, tell me what color they were, and counted how many letters there were. Little man of course had to help his sister with this activity, he always loves sitting in the bin no matter whats inside of it. Using our bananagrams to spell out her name. Put together a magnet bin for the kids so they could explore the magnetic forces of magnetism. Bought a Magnetic Mania that came with two magnetic wands, 10 magnet marbles, 50 counting chips, and a booklet. I also added extra magnets we had so hey could search for them in the rainbow pasta. They have been playing with this for 30 minutes already. I'm so glad they are enjoying it. Kanani even put together some of the chips to make different colors. SCIENCE After reading about some of the things that are close to the ground from our Things Outdoor Science book I pulled out our figures of the ant life cycle. She placed the cards I made in order then explained what each stage was. Once she was done explaining she placed the figures on the correct card. We went outside after it had stopped raining to check on our log that we had placed on the ground several days back. Found several snails, rollie pollies, spiders, beetles, and some strange looking bugs. I could only get a picture of the snail since the other bugs were moving fast trying to hide. Went to visit my dad and the kids went to the backyard to continue looking for more earthworms. My dad has a garden and lots of flowers in the backyard. The kids really enjoyed finding all sorts of insects under flower pots, bricks, and rocks. Some of the insects we found: lots of rollie pollies, snails, and spiders. In the top left picture is how the dirt looked before the kids started digging, top right is how the dirt looked under a plastic bin which shows the tunnels the earthworms had made. Bottom left picture is the earth worms poop and the bottom right is one of the earthworms the kids found on the shovel. Put together an earthworm habitat for us to observe in the next couple of days and then we will let them free. One of the activities mentioned in the book was to collect leaves and try to identify them. We actually had done this activity for Kindergarten and saved it. It's part of our Science center. Kanani is observing the different leaves and letting me which ones are her favorite and what they look like to her. She wants to collect more leaves to make her leaf collection bigger. It was neat observing the earthworms make their tunnels and pull the leaves and food down the tunnels. We let them go at the end of the week before it started raining again so they could live in their natural habitat. Hope we get to do the ant experiment, just been hard with all the rain. SCIENCE/NATURE CENTER Since we will be learning a lot about nature throughout the year I set up a science/nature center for the kids to be able to pull out different items for them to observe. On the table there are two trays for them to be able to set the items they want to observe at the time and take it with them wherever they want to sit. There are also two floor mats next to the black book shelf that they can pull out on the floor to use for their observations. Here is a closer look at what is on the white book shelf. The top shelf holds our microscope, test tubes, slides, magnets, clock, globe, some bug figurines, and some sensory bags. Second shelf holds some lap books, bags with: pattern sheets, color wheel, and many different types of life cycle figures, it also holds a tornado bottle and 4 baskets that have: fossils, shark tooths, seashells, gems stone, different types of coal, sandpaper, and magnifying glass. Third shelf holds some wood blocks that my wonderful dad cut for us last year, different types of pine cones, rocks, and seashells. Bottom shelf holds bigger wood pieces, bags filled with different types of items we found outside: moss, pine needles, dry grass, cotton which we used to make bird nests, and many more nature items. A closer look or what's in the bags Love that we have the nature center because its has been raining a lot this week and it has been hard for them to go do a nature walk which we all love. VIDEOS Watched some cute movies from our collection to go with the topic close to the ground. POEMS One of the poems we read was "Five Garden Snails", found this cute poem on Early Learning HQ website. I decided to draw some birds in different colors and 5 snails to go with the poem. Kanani really enjoyed being able to interact with the poem. END OF THE WEEK Enjoyed playing in the rain, great way to end the week. It has been a great first week, can't wait to see how the following weeks go for us. GOD BLESS! PREVIOUS POST Curriculum organization
The Unlikely Homeschool is an online, faith-based site full of ideas, organizational tools, and printables for the busy homeschooling mom.
At the start of this 2013-2014 school year, I learned a lot from Heatheraine Trim's blog post about organizing our curriculum - My Father's World First Grade (Learning God's Story). I took some of her ideas and made them my own. In this post I'd like to share how I organized the weekly Proverbs for memorization. My Father's World uses mostly the NIV versions of these Proverbs, but I wanted my children to learn the same version as their own Bibles, since they'd be looking them up in their Bibles. They have the International Children's Bible. So, I created Handwriting Worksheets with the ICB version. I didn't prefer a few of the verses in the ICB version, so I just had them learn the NIV version that week. Then I printed all the worksheets and put them into a DUO-TANG folder (the kind you can put 3 hole punched papers into the middle). You could also use a thin three ring binder. I created a cover page and glued them to the front. I also created small cards for learning and display similar to those in My Father's World Kindergarten curriculum. Here they are displayed on our cabinet. You can download the Proverbs Cover Pages and the Proverbs Handwriting Sheets and Display Cards by clicking that link. I created the card pages in the document so that you can print either the NIV or the ICB version. You can even print them back to back and have both versions. I found a few verses where I didn't like how the ICB said it, so I wanted the kids to learn the NIV. For the most part though, I found the ICB was easier for them to understand. For their copying of the Proverbs in ICB version I created handwriting tracing sheets. This is a PDF document, the handwriting sheets are first, with the cards at the end. I did not create NIV handwriting sheets, but if you want to make your own, I made mine at http://www.handwritingworksheets.com. I hope someone else (maybe next year!) benefits from this as well! I will be writing more posts (hopefully!) on some other organizing ideas for this wonderful curriculum!
Here's a look into what comes in a My Father's World 1st grade box! If you're considering the curriculum, here's a look at it in real life.
MFW: Learning God's Story 1st Grade Curriculum I'll be sharing the way I've organized our curriculum below. It's still a work in progr...
Welcome to our Weekly MFW 1st Grade Posts (we are using the first edition)! If you haven't already, be sure to check out our daily school routine and curriculum choices here. We are almost all better from our sickness and have been filling our days with school, giggles, and lots of cuddles. The weather here has been up and down, and we have tried to go outside when possible. I'm not sure who is looking forward to warmer weather more, the kiddos or me! Here's what we did MFW 1st Grade~Week 4! Calendar/Weather Chart: Yay for a new month! Ladybug decided on a "Rainbow Theme" for coloring her calendar and chart. Check out these adorable weather charts/calenders here Bible Bible: Our Proverb for the week is Proverbs 21:23 ("He who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from calamity). We discussed using our mouths to speak kind and helpful words. Ladybug and Buddy liked this song by Steve Green; and it went well with the Proverb. It's an oldie, but very cute! Ladybug and Buddy giggled while they tried to hold their tongues and sing! On day 2 (beginning in week 3) of this week, Ladybug copied the Proverb on a handwriting sheet. Click here for a cute handwriting practice sheet! We also did a Bible Activity to help Ladybug and Buddy understand who the real author of the Bible is (God). Side Note: Most MFW 1st Grade activities (that we've done) take little preparation. This is helpful when you have young children and active babies!! Pumpkin, our sweet, active, socks don't have to match, Baby Grammar: This week, we've started learning long vowels. The first day, Ladybug was a little confused. I think because she has many long vowel sight words memorized (from Reading). But after some review games (helpful games in teacher manual) and making sure she understood the long vowel "rules", we were able to move on. That's the beauty of homeschooling, isn't it? Being able to move at our children's learning pace, stop when they've hit a "snag", and watch them grasp and master the hurdle. There is nothing more wonderful than being apart of that process! Ladybug's MFW 1st Grade Workbook Page (Week 4)! Also, as part of her phonics, Ladybug created a book called "Animal Tales". She enjoyed reading/writing/illustrating the sentences each day! I laminated each page and used two book rings. Ladybug requested ribbon. Here's a few of Ladybug's pages. Math: We are using Complete Book of Math (CBOM). It's part of MFW 1st Grade curriculum. We are slowly working our way through. The reason: Ladybug likes to color.every.cute.picture.in.her.math.book. This slows down our "progress", but I feel she is very advanced in Math at this point. We also get a good dose of Math from our Classical Conversations Group (she can skip count all the way to the 15's!!...as in 15,30,45,60...etc). Ladybug working on her CBOM Book Closer look of a CBOM Page Science: We are enjoying the Science Books that are included with MFW 1st. This week we are studying trees in our "Things Outdoors" book. Unfortunately, the weather here has been on the cold side. We are hoping in the next few days to finish with our Science part. Ladybug and Buddy have been learning how to figure the age of a tree, and have already picked out the perfect tree trunk to investigate. There is a beautiful birch tree outside our dining room window. We've learned fascinating things about birch trees this week!! For instance, the most popular and well-known uses for birch wood are birch-bark canoes and indoor basketball court floors. A fully grown birch tree can produce over 1 million seeds in a year. Who knew?!? We are also watching our beans (from week 3). Lady bug and Buddy draw a picture of the changes they see in the beans every few days. I'll share more about that in the next few weeks. Our Kidney Beans ~~Day 3~~ Usborne Science Book Week 4 has went by fast. We are enjoying MFW 1st Grade and look forward to next week!
MFW: LEARNING GOD'S STORY WEEK 9 This week we will be learning about the or, ir, and wor sound, bible land maps, thunder and lighting storms, and how to control our anger. BOOKS Great books for the week BIBLE Learned that hippos are one of Africa's most dangerous animals, their temper is what makes them so dangerous. There are times that people have nasty tempers like the hippos. They hurt other people and at times even lose friends along the way. God wants us to be friends to everyone and settle our differences peacefully. We talked about Bighorn sheep in our devotion and learned that they live high in the mountains and not very friendly at all. When the male bighorn sheep (Rams) become angry they fight by slamming their heads together. Some people are like rams and like to fight sometimes bullying other people who are younger or smaller they are. God wants us to be the type of people who settle their problems with good words . Wildcats may look like your regular house cat but are very dangerous and powerful. They are very territorial and fierce fighters. Some people may seem friendly at first but when they become angry they say and do things they later regret. Don't let anger take control of you and your actions try to work things out peacefully. BIBLE VERSE Memory verse: A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control. ~Proverbs 29:11 Stop your anger! Turn from your rage! Do not envy others-it only leads to harm. ~Psalm 37:8 And don't sin by letting anger gain control over you. Don't let the sun go down while you are still angry, for anger gives a mighty foot hold to the Devil. ~Ephesians 4:26-27 WORKSHEETS Number of the day Writing her memory verse Learning the ar sound, practicing her reading Learning the or sound Working on the ir sound wor sound worksheet MATH On Saturday we did a yard sale at my mom's house and Kanani asked if she could do a Lemonade stand. This was the perfect way for her to practice for her math and get ready for her store. Loved how excited she was while selling her lemonade which we added Strawberry Kool-Aid and Raspberry Lemonade. Most of the customers would pay her $1 instead of $0.50 and would congratulate her for working so hard. I'm so proud of her work in just 2 hours of working she made $10. Addition fun Horizontal addition It has been so much fun playing store and seeing how great her math has gotten. ARTS & CRAFTS Reviewing on part 3 of her abstract art. ACTIVITIES Set a store area for the math lesson this week. The top roll of the toy bins (top left picture) is where the foods are: fruits, vegetable, and basic food like chicken, eggs, etc. Second roll are toy figurines, she said she need to have toys in her store because that's the best part of a store. Third roll are small blocks which they use to thread shoe laces through, tower blocks, binoculars, and foam letter, numbers, and shapes. The bottom roll holds different sizes of blocks. Top right picture is where the Melissa & Doug food that you can cut, box goods, and can goods. The kitchen area is where she said she will cook food for her customers and the chalkboard is where the hours of her store is. Before breakfast little man wanted to play with the rainbow pasta. They played with the pasta while I made them breakfast. Kanani said the pasta sounded like thunder as she was pouring it. Placed different objects in plastic eggs for the kids to shake and try to identify what was inside them. SCIENCE Little man is learning about the sound sense which works great with our lighting/thunder storm unit. I set up a xylophone water glass for the kids to use the sticks to hear the different sounds each cup makes because of the different levels of water. "Will the wind blow it?" experiment, lots of fun blowing different items to see if she could move it. Listened to popcorn popping which sounds like lighting and then enjoyed a yummy snack. GEOGRAPHY Searching where Jesus lived: Israel Learning some river names POEMS LIGHTING By: Christopher Poindexter If you ever want your soul to dance in the clouds, you will at some point have to juggle lightning and taste the thunder. VIDEOS Watched some episodes of Liberty Kids to learn out our nation's history, it went great for this week since we are celebrating our Independence Day. Used the app Brain Pop and learned about the Declaration of Independence and about Thunderstorms. CELEBRATING INDEPENDENCE DAY Printed out a word search worksheets of American symbols, I got this from Teachers Pay Teachers website which also included the mini book below. Made an American symbols mini book Painting fireworks with toilet paper rolls The kids made Patriotic Suncatchers Made some delicious cupcakes with the help of my little baker Mixed together some baking soda, water, and food coloring into star molds and placed them in the freezer for 2 days. Popped them out in the bin and the kids squirted them with a bottle filled with vinegar. They listened to the fizzing sounds and Kanani compared it to lighting popping. Very fun experiment to do with the kids. The link is below is to a wonderful display of fireworks: https://www.facebook.com/244876772358470/videos/488176438028501/ FIELD TRIP Went to the library for story time on fireworks The librarians were brave and allowed the kids to make fireworks out of glue and glitter. There was glitter everywhere by the time the kids finished their crafts. Kanani working hard on her craft, the kids were so proud of their completed crafts. END OF WEEK These two decided that they wanted to wear one of my shirts, silly kids. It has been a week of learning about lighting and thunderstorms, which we so happened to have a lot of this week. God is always providing great opportunities for us to learn. Now to learn more exciting things next week. GOD BLESS! PREVIOUS POST Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Week 4 Week 5 Week 6 Week 7 Week 8
During our first year of homeschool last year, we found that the most effective supplement for us was our Morning Board. There were days we may not accomplish much else but knowing that we finished our morning board time meant we were still learning a lot. This year, thanks to a 75% off sale at Mardel,
So this is a random post for me, but I am sharing how I organized my papers from MFW. Somebody requested pictures of how people organize their papers so I posted this one on Facebook. I had a request to post this so they could pin it on pinterest, so here it is! I used a 3.5" binder and Avery Big Tab Slash Pocket Dividers 8 tab, kind of like these. I founds shoplet to have the best price on them at the time. I stuck the papers for each week from MFW in the front pocket and all my extras for each week in the back pocket. I have loaned out my kinder binder so I don't have it on hand to look at, but I think I purchased 4 packs for it and 5 packs for Adventures, which left some extra for whatever I wanted to file in the back.
