Apparently, having plants around at home is not only aesthetically pleasing, but it's also amazing for your soul as well as your health—both mental and physical. Studies have shown that houseplants can improve concentration and productivity, reduce stress levels, boost your mood, and help you sleep. Moreover, plants are natural air purifiers that have the ability to cleanse the air from toxic chemicals, so the air you're breathing becomes much cleaner and fresher. Also, let's not forget about the fact that they can raise the air’s humidity by releasing water, which can protect us from getting respiratory problems. The list goes on. And on. And on.

Quite do-able as a houseplant. Trick is to have the developing leaves grow with their backs to the light, then tie to a stake otherwise plant has a 5' spread. I did think it needed potting on a lot but it really doesn't.

Monstera are species of evergreen tropical vines and shrubs that are native to Central America. They are famous for their natural leaf-holes, which has led to the rise of their nickname, Swiss Cheese Plant. The Monstera's leaf-holes are called fenestrations and are theorized to maximize sun fleck capture on the forest floor by increasing the spread of the leaf while decreasing the mass of leaf cells to support. Common Name(s): Ceriman, Cutleaf Philodendron, Hurricane Plant, Mexican Breadfruit, Mother-in-Law, Split-leaf Philodendron, Swiss Cheese Plant Monstera deliciosa is commonly grown outdoors as an ornamental plant in the tropics and subtropics. The plant requires a lot of space and a rich and loose soil (ideally garden soil and compost in equal parts). If it grows in the ground it is better to plant it near a tree, where it can climb, if not against a trellis. It is moderately greedy and needs to be watered just to keep the soil slightly moist. Its hardiness is 11 (that is to say the coldest at −1 °C or 30 °F). It cannot withstand these temperatures for more than a few hours, but it can live outside in certain regions (Mediterranean coast, Brittany). A steady minimum temperature of at least 13–15 °C (55–59 °F) is preferable, allowing continuous growth. Growth ceases below 10 °C (50 °F) and it is killed by frost. It needs very bright exposure, but not full sun. The plant produces fruits. As the fruit ripens, these scales or platelets fall off the fruit, releasing a strong and sweet scent. The smell has been compared to a combination of pineapples and bananas Sunlight Thrives in bright to medium indirect light. Not suited for intense, direct sun but can be acclimated to withstand it. Water Water every 1-2 weeks, allowing soil to dry out between waterings. Expect to water more often in brighter light and less often in lower light. Pro tip: Monsteras can benefit from filtered water or water left out overnight before using. Humidity Normal room humidity will do, but prefers humid conditions if possible. Consider incorporating a fine-mist mister or humidifier to boost humidity level indoors. Temperature Most houseplants prefer temps in the 65°F-85°F range (18°C-30°C). It’s best not to let it go below 60°F (15°C). Soil Use a well-draining potting mix. Mix in ingredients such as perlite or lava rocks to increase soil aeration as need. Common Problems The Monstera is an easy-going plant and is generally pest-free. Treat pests as soon as they appear with weekly sprays of a natural pesticide like neem oil and regular wipe-downs of the plant. SYMPTOM: Leaves turning brown and crispy at the edges CAUSE: Thirsty plant, underwatered or high salt build up SYMPTOM: Wilting plant, dry potting mix CAUSE: Underwatered or pot-bound SYMPTOM: Yellowing leaves or black stems, wet potting mix CAUSE: Overwatered Pictures show adult plant and its possible applications. The pot is not included. Root ball of the plant comes in a plastic poly bag, sealed to maintain moisture for the 3 days that the plant is in transit. Height of the plants is measured from the base of the root ball. No returns, refunds or exchanges Fertilizer that I include as an option is an excellent choice for professional growers or nurseries if you grow plant in a pot. I personally use it for all my plants. It has polymer coating to allow slow release during 8-9 months evenly. You don't have to worry about repotting the plant for about 1 year or worry about burning plant with your regular over the counter fertilizer. You need about 3-4oz per 3 gal pot or 4-5oz per 5 gal pot. This happens because the plant is sitting too deep in the soil https://i.imgur.com/2GDEtqV.jpg The first thing to fix the situation is to remove soil surrounding the stem leaving only roots covered by soil. If necrosis ( black stuff on the base of petiole on the first photo) has just set in you might be able to fix it with fungicide from Home depot or use peroxide solution (H2O2) to kill the fungus. Color-safe bleach from grocery store can also be used, it is almost pure peroxide. Other fungicides that I had experience with are: slightly pink solution of potassium permanganate (antibacterial/antifungal) or essential oils (clover, rosemary, peppermint, oregano)
