When you think of indoor pollution, those grotesque, blown-up images of dust mites might come to mind. Tiny bugs living in our mattresses are only one source of pollution, however. Different types of indoor pollution include air and water pollutants, cleaning products and cosmetics. Most of us think of our home as a haven - a safe place where we are protected from the rest of the world. But sometimes extra care needs to be taken to create a healthy home. What Causes Indoor Air Pollution? While we might be wary of smog and acid rain, outdoor pollutants probably don't affect us nearly as much as indoor pollutants do. Concentrations of indoor pollutants are 25 to 62 percent greater than outdoor levels. Because Americans spend 80 to 90 percent of their time indoors, they're at risk for serious health problems. Sources of air pollution include wood-burning stoves, tobacco smoke, cooking and heating appliances, and vapors from building materials, and furniture. Paints, sealants, and other finishes can also be harmful. Radon, a radioactive gas that's released from inside the earth, is also a pollutant, and can be found concentrated in some basements. Reducing Indoor Air Pollution Many of the products we use every day generate indoor air pollution. One of the best ways to improve indoor air quality is to eliminate the sources of the pollution. Choose non-toxic furnishings, flooring, finishes and supplies. Eliminate toxic household cleaners from your home. Seal or enclose asbestos-coated sources. Provide adequate ventilation by opening windows or using fans. Switch to an environmentally-safe dry cleaner. Add some houseplants. Discourage smoking indoors. Have air ducts cleaned. Have lead-based paint professionally removed. Vent clothes dryers to outdoors. Remove water-damaged carpets. Test basements for radon gas. Natural Pollutants Biological contaminants are another type of pollutant that affects the indoor environment. Pet dander, dust mites and other microorganisms that occur naturally can settle in carpets and other fabrics. Bacteria, molds, mildew and insect or rodent droppings are also dangerous. These allergens can trigger allergies and sometimes lead to serious illnesses such as asthma in some people. Use flooring options like wood, cork, tile, stone or bamboo to reduce the number of allergens in the home. These flooring materials don't emit fumes or harbor microorganisms and are easier to keep clean than carpeting. Air purifiers and mechanical ventilation systems can help keep indoor air healthy. They can reduce levels of humidity, which creates a breeding ground for bacteria, mold and mildew. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends keeping humidity levels below 30 to 50 percent. "Fireproof House for a Bride" was the title of the article. If you're curious about White, he wrote a book called "The Bungalow Book." Chapter 1 is published at Antique Home & Style. I've added the image of the living room to show the staircase at left. The plan is a modern, open bungalow style, even though the house itself is not a bungalow. Source: Ladies Home Journal

The Eufaula Alabama Tour of Homes has come and gone for another year. Our home was on the tour this year and and I can tell you that it is a sweet event as the days of laboring are over and you are rewarded by hearing the tourist complements and enjoyment from being in your home. My favorite complement was from a lady who said that she could just live on our front porch as this too had been the soul reason of my enchantment with our home. I could look past the chippy paint and just see years of sipping ice tea and swinging on this delightful porch with all of its charm. We dressed the porch up with ribbons and roses and soft twinkling lights that you could hear the traffic slow when plugging them in at dusk. The garland was really the only area that I splurged a bit this year knowing that I would enjoy its beauty for years to come. I purchased just the topper from Robyn Story Designs in Tampa FL. Robyn has become a great friend and brilliant resource for creativity, inspiration and beautiful ideas. If you are ever in Tampa make sure you visit her beautiful store. My wonderful friend Marie then helped me complete the garland strands for around the front door. That girl can make some ribbon and bows sing and I don't know what I would have done without her. Another friend Kathleen loaned me her extra bulbs and decorations and another friend, Margaret loaned me some of her poinsettas. I am blessed to have such amazing friends and I love them all dearly! To me it's how you feel when you are greeted at the door and this charming Santa helped me welcome our guests. One day as I was coming home my neighbor greeted me and told me how he had been cleaning our their attic and found something that he thought we might like. He had place a black trash bag on our tractor seat in the garage and he assured me that it would not hurt their feelings if I just wanted to toss it. My grandchildren were visiting that day and so I was slow to get to the trashbag. The next day when I finally remembered I ran out to get it and shouted with excitement as I pulled out Jolly Old St Nick out of the black trash bag. I knew right away where he would go. So just like Santa I am relaxing and enjoying my surroundings today, but I think the both of us had better get busy with getting the gifts now. So come on old boy, let's get moving! Today I am joining Susan's party for Met Monday.

I could'nt leave this area without another shot of my favorite abandoned homestead. An old wagon rests under a Locust tree.
