Marine Insight - The maritime industry guide.
“The Crochet Coral Reef is palpable, polymorphous, terrifying and inspiring stitchery.” –Donna Haraway Australian-born, California-based sisters Margaret and Christine Wertheim draw on a unique fusion of mathematics, marine biology, and traditional handicraft to create large-scale coral landscapes at once beautiful and blighted. Their soft sculptures simulate living reefs using crochet to mimic the curling, crenelated forms of marine organisms. The Crochet Coral Reef project has been exhibited at the 58th Venice Biennale, Helsinki Biennial, Andy Warhol Museum, The Smithsonian and other international venues. With essays about the scientific, social, and environmental dimensions of the project, the book provides a critical in-depth look at the power of art and community in the face of climate change. Collaborative, figurative, material, conceptual, artistic, feminist and playful, the Wertheims’ Crochet Coral Reef alerts us to the reality that life on Earth is nothing if not entangled. Hardcover, 229 pages

Coral presence has rapidly
In Mulyana’s Fragile Ecologies, two figures cloaked in coral and algae tower over beds of fiber-based sea creatures. The Indonesian artist continues his playful and eccentric approach to marine life conservation in his solo show on view through March 4 at Sapar Contemporary, which brings some of his life-sized costumes and an array of woolen specimens to the gallery. Each piece is knit or crocheted with recycled, brightly colored yarn, which the artist fashions into sprawling ecosystems and immersive installations that dangle from the ceiling. More

On Friday, we completed our month long study of Ancient Egypt. We could have easily spent more time with this unit as there are so many great activities available for Ancient Egypt studies. We enjoyed doing a self-made lapbook to go along with our study. We also did a few notebooking pages and worksheets with this unit. Munchkin enjoyed studying hieroglyphics. We chose the pyramids and sphinx as the cover image as it is one of the classic images of Egypt. Munchkin also says that it reminded her of how hard life must of been for the Israelites under Egyptian…
