Duane Michals Duane Michals is a key photography when it comes to narrative as Michals I well known for his works using photo-sequences, in a way this is linked to narrative photography as the photographs are made to link together to tell a story, and Michals in a way does this. Examples of his work: These are to very good examples of Michals work, these two pieces are named Things are queer, and The Bogeyman, these are two very different pieces, but they both tell a certain story. The Bogeyman is more literal as, it shows that a child is afraid of The Bogeyman and as a result of that, he then comes into being. Whereas Things are queer on the other hand suggests that we are all just small component in an otherwise larger world, the photographs have been taken so it gives the impression of depth and infinite, as it is a photo with in a photo, within a photo, until it loops back on itself causing an infinite loop.
We all have narratives that we use to weave together our beliefs and experiences in a way that feels meaningful. We can often have dominant narratives eg ‘I’m a victim’ that then influence how we r…

One artist that stood out to me from today's lecture was Duane Michals. I've seen some of his work before, and I just think his photo narratives are fascinatingly unique and meaningful. I hadn't seen his photo This Photograph is My Proof from 1974 before, but it's so sad and beautiful in its simplicity. We look back at old photographs and struggle to remember exactly how we felt in that specific moment when the camera went off--did we really feel those emotions? Could a relationship once so sweet now be replaced by sour memories? Why do we forget about the good, the bad, or the mediocre times when everything and every feeling is significant to where we are today? This photo is both heart breaking and relatable. Duane Michals, This Photograph is My Proof, 1974 Even though I've seen it before, I had no idea Chance Meeting had a homosexual subtext. After analyzing each frame in class, the sequence takes on a whole new meaning and embodies the fear, excitement, and bewilderment of finding or meeting a potential partner. I appreciate Kip's lectures because even when he shows us things we've already seen before, he sheds new light on their significance and the implications such works have beyond what's merely on the surface. Duane Michals, Chance Meeting, 1970 Michals does an excellent job of telling stories through his photographs and provides both amusement and awe. I like that his narratives aren't explicit. You have to read them in depth and pay close attention to get something out of them, which makes them even more powerful.

I can't believe that a week has come and gone. With the new month, I have started working with my 6th graders on Fictional Narratives. I HAVE decided that I am going to take a couple of months on this genre and REALLY get into the nitty gritty of it. We have been studying the structure of fictional narratives, reading mentor texts, and talking about what we read during the day from a "writer's perspective". It is really fun to hear the kids start to talk about the things they read as a writer! For my bulletin board, I had my amazing wife do all the writing for me. I got the purpose (top left corner), the title, and of course... THE ANCHOR CHARTS started and posted. Because I am taking it slow and covering the concept in depth, I am still working on teaching the lessons that will fill in all the anchor chart spaces, and I am working to do those quickly- but with understanding. However, we just had a mini-lesson on the framework of a fictional narrative and the students drew the anchor chart in their journals. It took a little while, but I love that they have mini-charts in their notebooks. Shoot! I should have taken a picture of a student notebook. They did such a great job with them! My wife made this poster sized one for my board. I really like how it turned out! I also love that since I started at the back of the chart book and am moving forward, the anchor chart for Personal Memoirs is still accessible to the students by simply lifting up the paper (as shown below)! I love when I have good ideas (because they don't seem to happen as often as I would like). As we continue through our journey with Fictional Narratives, I will continue to share what we do so you can enjoy the journey with me. Today, we worked on studying mentor texts and writing rules for punctuating dialogue. We found that there are four different ways that dialogue is written. We will have our anchor chart made by the end of tomorrow and my wife will take my sloppy copy and make it a thing of beauty- THEN I will share it with you. I am excited to take the adventure with my students. I realize that the new core standards want us to focus on and push non-fiction reading and writing, and I will, but I feel that I need to get them excited about writing FIRST and then we can move on to those other concepts. Writing ROCKS! Cheers! -MrHughes

Instead of capturing a single moment in time, Clive Head’s oil paintings reveal multiple perspectives and actions within a single setting. Tracking a complete, single figure within works like “To the Silence of Tiresias,” below, is difficult, yet the broader humanity of that place and a wider timeframe are revealed upon inspection.
