Entry for the Noble Marine RS500 National Championship has been declared open! The event takes place over three days from Friday 23rd – Sun 25th June at Hayling Island Sailing Club. The RS500 UK Nationals will be a fixture on the European Tour and is expected to attract a good entry of RS500s from Holland and other European countries, as well as the UK sailors. The UK National Champion title will of course be reserved for a UK sailor! The event will take place alongside the RS200 Masters Championship and share two days with the Salcombe Gin RS Summer Regatta. RS500 sailors and guests will enjoy a Fleet Dinner on Friday evening, before being joined by the other RS fleets for the Salcombe Gin Summer Regatta. The spectacular Salcombe Gin RS Summer Ball will take place on Saturday 24th June, raising money for the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, who support young people aged 8-24 in their recovery from cancer by inviting them on sailing or outdoor adventures. This is the first RS Ball since COVID and promises to be a lively, fun event with music and lots of dancing.
AFTER a week of sailing and eight races over five days, Jono Brown and Chris Agar from Burnham in Essex took the title of Squib National Champions. Weymouth Sailing Club last week hosted the prestigious event, sponsored by We Are Weymouth, attracting 140 sailors and their families from all over the country. Brown and Agar, in their boat Two Counts, held off the competition to win the national title in what is considered the most popular keel boat class in the UK. There was also local success in the final day’s race as fourth place went to Weymouth boat Saskia V, sailed by Richard Frost and Wendy Smythe. Fellow Weymouth sailors and two-time squib national champions, Mike and Penny Fenwick, overcame adversity earlier this week to bring success back to their home club, when they finished second in race seven. Their boat, Ghost Rider, had been involved in collision earlier in the week which resulted in a sizeable hole in the hull of the boat. After a quick overnight repair, the Fenwicks were back for the next day’s racing and by Friday had come a close second to RicOshea, sailed by Tom JeffCoate and Mark Hogan. Weymouth’s beautiful scenery provided a stunning backdrop to the racing, with competitors sailing by the famous Osmington White Horse. The hill figure was cut into the limestone of Osmington Hill in 1808 and depicts the figure of George III.
