New Bern Tours: Reviews from families visiting New Bern Tours. If part of your goal in bringing your family to New Bern is to learn about North Carolina history before the Civil War, this trolley tour is a must-do. The tour is 90 minutes long, and it begins across the street from Tryon Palace. We did not need reservations, but if a certain tour time is a high priority for your family, I recommend calling ahead of time. Apparently, the week after our visit they were expecting to begin using a new trolley which has air-conditioning. Kids on the Tour My kids at ages six and seven were a bit young to fully appreciate this tour. My seven year old daughter appeared to listen (or at least behave herself.) I think her favorite part of the tour was driving past the historic houses. After the tour, she expressed that she would like to move into a Victorian era mansion in New Bern. My six year old son was not interested - but was generally happy as long as the trolley was moving. (Though this trolley tour did make frequent, short stops.) Generally, the content of the tour was appropriate for all ages. Tweens and teens might find this tour interesting -- even if they dont want to admit it. Much of the tour focuses on the family of John Wright Stanley who had two sons named John, one by his wife and another by a slave woman -- only months apart in age. Both Johns played a prominent role in New Bern during the early 1800s. Our tour guide focused on their story as we drove around town. Stops and Highlights We made only a couple of stops on the tour where we actually got out of the trolley. The first was at the city cemetery and the second at a church by the City Hall downtown. One of the most interesting buildings that we drove past was the first public school in North Carolina. Before going on the trolley tour. I had picked up some walking tour guides to historic home and churches around the city. When I looked at these guides after our tour, it was clear that we had seen almost everything on those self-guided walking tours. While our tour guide only went out of his way a few times to interact with the kids in the group, he was welcoming to families. My kids loved the driver -- he gave them high fives every time they exited the vehicle. The one curious history lesson that the tour guide did make a point of showing the kids was a very oddly inscribed grave marker in the cemetery. I wont ruin the surprise for if you do happen to take the tour... Bottom Line There is no better way to learn about the story of New Berns history than to take a trolley tour -- but, be warned, a 90 minute tour is a bit long for most children under the age of 10. Disclosure: My kids and I received complimentary tickets for this tour from Visit New Bern. All opinions are my own.
