Greg Githen’s How to Think Strategically: Sharpen Your Mind. Develop Your Competency. Contribute to Success is unlike many business strategy books, focusing on the underlying perspective and micro skills rather than on the business options and strategies themselves. It is a book full of concepts, well documented with supporting analogies, biographical examples and case studies from Christopher Columbus and Benjamin Franklin to Kodak, Oakland As Baseball Team and IBM. I found the book to be well organized, building on several models created by the author and supported by a number of supplemental resources. The 20 micro skills outlined throughout the book fit within this framework and are explained in excellent detail with relevant examples for each. Throughout the book, Githen also addresses leadership styles, perception, decision-making skills, and application of micro skills in developing a strategy. For writing a strategy, the author has presented a very excellent model consisting of 5 steps. This model is used to explain a few of the company strategies presented. Following the last chapter, there are several appendices valuable in assisting organizations in using the book to train their employees. I liked the way the author explained his concepts. How to Think Strategically by Greg Githens is an excellent book which can be used as a supplement in a Strategic Management Course or in an organization training their managers to become strategic. Highly recommended!
