Before I start today I would like to tell you that I've slowly started sewing again!!! The weather has been a bit warmer on a few days so I've been able to get in the conservatory. New fabrics courtesy of Miranda (many thanks) have broken my vow not to make anymore bags. I'm easily led astray!!!! Here's the link. OK, so here are the netting needles I own. Just to prove (to myself more than anybody else) that I did do a bit of combining netting with tatting in the past here is a picture of a piece that I did for a little booklet produced by Margaret Hamer and Kathleen Waller. Interestingly I learnt bobbin lace from Margaret - via snail mail to help her write the first of a similar series of booklets she produced. Can you see the picture at the bottom? One is the net made into a square mesh and then stretched onto a frame and embroidered on and the other has a tatted centre with netting round it. That was a nightmare to do as the picots on the tatting had to be just the right size to take the knots of the round of netting. When I look back I believe I had more brain cells than I do now!!!!
I have always found winding bobbins by hand intensely therapeutic and deeply relaxing. But it is ultimately quite time consuming and can take a toll on your hands / thumbs / arms. Last year I atte…

Hello everybody! This week I've decided to write about tatting! Confession. I know nothing about tatting. I have never tried it, only a few of my books talk
Learning to tat is on my needlework bucket list. I love the look of this exquisite form of lace making.

I have recently started Bobbin lace! Yet another new technique I just had to try. I was given a bobbin lace cushion by my lovely in laws. I started going to classes lead by my friend Sandra. Sandra makes it look so easy, but she is also a very good teacher so I am really getting into it. The cushion I have is shaped like a dome and awkward to carry, so I made a carry bag. The design was based on a bag owned by Sandra, handmade by a friend of hers. I really liked the design so decided to replicate it. The outside is made with a blue woven upholstery fabric, lined with a heavy weight cotton. I stabilised the panels with iron on vilene. One side has an outside zipped pocket... The bag unzipped either side so I can get the cushion out easily. You can see the pockets I added to the inside.... I also made a zip up case for carrying the bobbins. This was made with the same fabric as my bag... This is the case with the zip open... I made the case with a central page, with pockets on both sides of the page and on the inside of the outer cover. Here are some examples of my bobbin lace, all bookmarks so far! I have a long way to go before I try one of the more complicated patterns! The snake on the left is made with whole stitch, the second from the left is the same pattern in half stitch. The two bookmarks on the right are the same pattern made with a sequence of half stitches called ground torchon. I am trying spiders tomorrow! Very exciting!
The “whole stitch” is one of the basic stitches in bobbin lace making. Knowing this one stitch is enough to make some very pretty lace. The whole stitch is formed over two pairs of bobbins. The process is: cross, twist, pin, cross, twist The twist is always right over left. Twist both pairs …
I discovered a video about the needle lace technique from Alençon. I was extremely impressed with this technique and was eager to try it out for myself.
Did you know that a needle can be used for tatting?
I am goin on a trip soon and will be flying, so I can't take my Needles with me on the flight, so I am learning how to Shuttle Tat. I tried to do this YEARS ago and just could NOT wrap my head (or my hands) around this! Well, thanks to Needle Tatting and actually knowing what the knots are supposed to look like and thanks to the wonderful ladies over at InTatters, I have taken up Shuttle Tatting! Well, this is my absolute Very First piece of Shuttle Tatting! Got the Ring and Chain figured out, so now it is time to actually MAKE something, as I never could understand the practice of practicing without actually making something. This is the Tatted Christmas Tree from BeStitched. I chose this pattern because I got to practice several things. I got to practice my Rings, Bare Threads and my Chains. I also got to practice the Magic Thread Trick for hiding ends. Very cool trick, let me tell you! The only problem I am having with the Shuttle Tatting is that I am double jointed and my fingers lock up at the worst moments. One of those "moments" being when I am trying to hold the thread snug when I make picots, so I decided to make myself a Tatting Chatelaine, also thanks to xstitchntat from InTatters for the wonderful idea in the first place! I went to a second hand store and bought a crochet hook (the only one they had...a size 8) and had my brother cut the hook off just as it starts flaring into the handle. I then took a very small lenght of thin dowel and drilled a small hole in it and put Super Glue in the hole, then the hook. Let it dry an hour or so and Voila! Mini Hook! I drilled a hole in the end so I can hang in on my Chatelaine. The picot guages I made from the plastic from an empty gum box. You've all seen my Striver before. ;-) I tatted a cord for my Chatelaine that is about 26" long and it works a DREAM! I am working on a bookmark right now and not having any problems at all with my fingers locking and I'm lovin' it!

You can use a tatting needle or blunt tapestry needle as if it were a shuttle. The needle is attached to a long cut thread as normal, and then manipulated in the same manner as a shuttle. - Using a needle as if it were a tatting shuttle - Tatting at BellaOnline
