Doves can be a nuisance nesting in your homes gutters and overhangs. Why not welcome these delightful backyard buddies a place to construct a nest with a hand-crafted platform? These homes are made from rough-sawn, weather-resistant cedar with a beautiful golden, red yellow hue. Platforms will have different characteristics like holes, knots, and color variations. After a season or 2 of weather, these will transition into a rustic grey. All joints are sealed with non-toxic wood glue and finishing nails to last season after season. It’s a breeze to install—pilot holes have been drilled into the top and bottom to place it where you need it. It’s best to position your nesting box at least 10 to 15 feet above the ground, this will offer the pair and their eggs better protection from predators. On average doves can have 2-3 broods a year and will continue to use the same nesting sites if they have had successful hatches. {House measures 9”H x 10”L x 5.5”W} 🕊️The first picture in this listing was the first prototype platform I built. You will receive the dove platform that is in all the other pictures and video. 🕊️🕊️These homes are intended for Doves, Robins, Bluejays, and Cardinals…‼️these are not a good option for Pigeons as they are much larger birds. If you are looking for a Pigeon option I have a coop in my shop listings.

Chip brought me home this nest when he was clearing the back fence line a few weeks ago. It is still intertwined in the scrub-bush branches into which it was built. I sprayed it with a couple coats of spray adhesive to help it hold together and then hung it on the wall... branches and all. :)

Whether it's the magical freedom of flight that they possess or their delicate and graceful features, some people just seem to fall under some sort of spell when they go bird watching. And not only are birds exquisite creatures, but we've also attributed them some very human-like traits in our common mythologies. For example, an owl is often seen as a symbol of wisdom, while a magpie symbolizes a sly trickster. And if a swan is attributed to being pure, then a crow supposedly brings death. Birds and us, humans, have always had a mythical and physical bond, so it's no surprise that these feathered creatures fascinate some of us so much.

I've been seeing variations on this theme all over the blogosphere, so I was curious to get my hands gooey and see what I could do... First, I gathered my supplies: Mod Podge, a disposable bowl, brown yarn, a plastic bowl (chosen only for its shape), and an old music book. And plastic eggs!!! Why are they not in the photo? I think my son was trying to swipe them at the time...well, whatever the reason do NOT forget your plastic easter eggs! Next, I channeled my inner birdie and made a nest. I cut the yarn into LOTS of pieces of varying length, then dipped the pieces into my Mod Podge (which I had poured into my disposable bowl). Then I randomly placed the pieces across the bottom of this bowl, overlapping them, going for a nest-y look. I left the bowl to dry overnight (it takes a LONG time to dry!). Looks like a very peculiar cake. Then, on to the eggs! I started by tearing my music paper into strips. Incidentally, I discovered that thin strips are better than thick ones. They wrap around the eggs more easily. I dipped each strip into the Mod Podge... ...then got my little fingers all ooey gooey smooshing the paper all over the eggs. Smoosh smoosh. Then I set up the eggs to dry on my special homemade Mod Podged Egg Drying Contraption (aka, another styrofoam bowl upside down with toothpicks stuck in it). I'm clever, I tell ya. And by the next day, I was able to pry my little nest off its bowl (wait until the Mod Podge looks clear!) and, while it was a little more flexible than I had anticipated, it still looks kinda cool with my eggs! Soo....if I were to do this again, I'd probably try paper mache instead, because I think that might give me a slightly stiffer result. I think I'd do a few more layers on the nest as well- maybe do 2-3 thin layers and allow each layer to dry in between so it wouldn't take forever to dry. But all in all, it was a fun, ooey-gooey project, and I especially love my musical eggs!! :-) This week I'm linking up to: Paper Issues!
A month or two ago I spied these cuties in the Pottery Barn catalog: I really liked them, but at $24 (plus shipping) for a set of 4, that was awfully steep. The Clemson Clay Nest was a public land art installation by Bavarian artist Nils-Udo that was constructed in the botanical gardens at Clemson University in South Carolina in 2005. The nest was built with the assistance of numerous students and other volunteers using 80 tons of pine logs harvested from the local Oconee County pine plantation and hundreds of bamboo stocks that were carefully organized into a circular structure dug in gardens rich red clay.
