Mancusi, Mari. Princesses, Inc., 301 pgs. Aladdin M!x, 2017. Language – G (0 swears, 0 “f”), Mature Content – G; Violence – G; Hailey and her friends have a problem: they have to get to Comicpalooza in June in order to see Collin Prince in person, but their parents can’t afford to pay for them to go. Together, the four girls start a new babysitting company, “Princesses and Pirates, Inc,” to earn the money to go themselves. Between homework, extracurricular activities, and more customers than they can handle, the girls are stretched thin and overwhelmed, but how can they say no and lose business when they are so close to their goal? Hailey and her friends are very creative, and I enjoyed reading the business planning side of things as well as the rest of the story. My favorite part of Hailey’s story, though, is that she and her friends made a goal and worked hard to achieve it. While we do not always get what we want in the way that we want, there is something to be said for making a goal. Hailey and her friends have inspired me to look at what I want in life and what I can do to make it happen instead of waiting for it to fall in my lap—this princess can save herself! MS – ADVISABLE. Finally, a fun way to reinforce the language of literature with small groups or the whole class! This familiar activity will have students actively thinking about the words George Takei et al. used to bring the characters of They Called Us Enemy to life. Because students only have to recognize the word matching the definition, not generate it, it is ideal for discussing both new and familiar terms. Two games are included – pgs. 1-108 and 109-204. There are 30 cards in each set to allow for whole class participation. The special calling cards, featuring fold over flaps to hide the answers, also give you the option of using them in centers - small group of students can play independently without a bingo caller. 30 vocabulary words are used on the cards, but each board only has 25; students have to really think about the words and their definitions, because they may not have a word to match every definition called. Options for extending play past the traditional 5 in a row format increase the learning potential. The words used in the first set are anguish, barrack, counter-attack, convening, dastardly, declaration / proclamation, degrading, fallible, implication, inevitable, infamy, inscrutable, internment, lore, lucrative, melancholy, ominous, onslaught, periodically, peripheral, premeditated, prudent, pungent, residence, rhetoric, saboteur, segregation, sentry, subjective and unsanitary. The second set features the words advocating, allegiance, animosity, arrogant, assimilate, avow, calamitous, comply, derelict, dissent, disillusioned, eloquent, epithet, forswear, infamous / notorious, inordinate, menace, mitigation, passively, penitentiary, perpetrator, profess, propaganda, radical, renounce, repatriation, restitution / redress, sporadic, trade-offs and unscrupulous. GILES- Sunday Express & Daily Express Cartoons. Thirty-seventh Series by Carl Giles. A Daily Express Publication. London, England. 1983. 122 pgs. Attractive copy these quite often are in very rough condition. Minor foxing noted. I must admit condition made me pick these up- have and will be listing 4 in his popular(probably to London, Ontario area) books. Good political cartoonist's are uncommon but can really illustrate the absurdity of the times and some of them are applicable to modern times.
Alonso, Juan Carlos and Paul, Gregory The Early Cretaceous (Ancient Earth Journal), 112 pgs Walter Foster Jr(Quatro), 2016. $19.95. NONFICTION This large book (yearbook size) features information about the Early Cretaceious life. Its grouped into Theropods, Sauropods, Ornithischuans, Pterosaurs and the Birds. Each double page spread features one or two creatures with basic information and large illustrations. There are close ups of a wide variety, bones, and comparisons, such as scale to humans. This is a top notch book for students just like the first one I reviewed. The dinosaur books receive the most circulation from K-2 graders, and this book contains just enough information without being too overwhelming. The cover is incredible with a texture and raised dinosaur. The pages are large with incredible illustrations that looks fairly realistic. The facts are interesting and brief. The book also feels like it will hold up well to young readers and the pages lay flat easily, which is a huge plus. I think students will like the dinosaurs fighting and the claw close ups. This book in particular, was fascinating as it featured to many feathered dinosaurs. EL (K-3) – ADVISABLE Reviewer: Stephanie Elementary School Librarian & Author.

North Korea Confidential by Daniel Tudor & James Pearson Tuttle Publishing, 2015. 192 pgs. Nonfiction There are lots of ideas about how North Korea functions. Many people picture them as a country that mindlessly worships an unstable dictator, is on the verge of starvation, and regularly detonates nuclear bombs. However, North Korean citizens are perhaps more similar to us than we may realize, despite their difficult circumstances. Through seven chapters about markets, leisure, power, crime, fashion, communications, and social division, Tudor and Pearson discuss day to day life and how people are making do in such a restrictive society. Korean history and culture fascinates me, and while I’ve easily learned a lot about the South, understanding the isolated North is much more difficult. It was interesting to learn about how North Koreans have adapted to their restrictive government (mostly bribery and gray market transactions), and how life has changed over the decades since the Korean War. So often books about North Korea focus on the negative aspects (of which there are many), and while this book by no means ignores them, I think it gives a more balanced account of day to day North Korean life. I found it quite enlightening, so it’s an easy recommendation from me. ACS
Metro Pictures presents the new photography of Cindy Sherman, who had been lying low since her exhibition at New York’s Museum of Modern Art in 2012. As is her custom, the artist put on makeup and disguised and staged herself; she was inspired by the portraits of aging Hollywood actresses. The reference to the stars of silent cinema, forgotten after the arrival of talking cinema, takes the form of an homage to these women, tormented by the passing of their youth and glory and being replaced by a new generation.

Vickers, Elaine Like Magic, 261 pgs. Harper, 2016. $17. Language: G (0 swears); Mature Content: G; Violence: G. Grace’s best friend, Kate, is moving and she doesn’t know how she’ll cope, especially since school is starting soon and the thought of trying to make friends leaves Grace anxious. On the day Kate moves away, Grace hops on the bus and heads to the library. Jada and her dad, Patrick, are moving from New Jersey to Salt Lake City, a place that seems as foreign as any place Jada could imagine. What Jada needs is to get her mind off the move and the new school, and immerse herself in her latest art project. Sounds like a trip to the library is in order. It’s Malia’s birthday and her mom is in the hospital due to complications with her pregnancy. It will be the first time she hasn’t been there for Malia’s birthday. After visiting her mom, Malia knows she should head home, but doesn’t think she can face a house full of aunts and cousins so heads to the library instead. Grace, Jada, and Malia have never met, but each end up at the library where they discover a locked treasure box and set about trying to open it and discover what is inside. I really enjoyed this story about friendship and growing up. The characters were engaging and realistic and found solutions to their problems. It might be a good recommendation for a student embarking on new experiences to know good things might just be around the corner. EL – ESSENTIAL, MS – OPTIONAL. Reviewer: RB
Littman, Sarah Darer In Case You Missed It, 305 pgs. Scholastic Press (Scholastic Inc.), 2016. $17.99 Language – PG (8 swear, 0 “f”), Mature Content – PG; Violence – PG; Sammy has the normal frustrating parents, the normal secret crush, and the normal teenage imperfections to keep in a diary away from prying eyes. The only difference between Sammy’s normality and every other high schooler is that her diary, synced to her family’s cloud account, gets hacked in an attack on her father’s bank. And her diary is posted online for anyone to read. Suddenly, all of Sammy’s normal frustrations and secrets aren’t secret; now they are subjected to scrutiny and judgment. Littman uses Sammy’s story to address lots of important struggles in life: downsides of technology, human fickleness, script processing, and just the fact that life is a struggle. Our lives are composed of challenges that come from our own choice or the choices of those around us and our reactions. While my problems are not the same ones that Sammy experiences, I found that the changes she made in her life encourage me to the see the good amid the embarrassing, the bad, and the ugly of life.
