Fairy Tale STEM Activity - Goldilocks and the Three Bears Try a hands-on STEM challenge with Goldilocks and the Three Bears! This STEM activity is designed for lower elementary kids. I am so excited to share some details about it! STEM tales introduce the youngest budding engineers to STEM, by taking a familiar story and using it to walk through the engineering design process. Do you love telling and re-telling stories with your kids? Do you ever change the ending to spice it up a bit? That's exactly what STEM tales is all about! Integrate Literacy and STEM with Fairy Tales The 8-page book provides an alternative ending to this story. Your students need to help make a bed for Goldilocks. Goldilocks is simply a printed out figure, which you can add weigh to with either small masses, pennies, or washers. Using whatever crafting materials you have handy (index cards and tape are really all that is needed, but feel free to use other supplies as well), create a new bed for Goldilocks. The Testing Phase of the STEM Challenge Is the bed large enough? Will it hold the weight of the figure? You will be surprised at the designs your students come up with! Designing and creating a bed for Goldilocks is a way for students to bring the fairy tale alive. After you have tested out the beds, it's time to introduce the bear family to the challenge (mama, papa, and baby, who is the same size as Goldilocks). You will add heavier weights to mama and papa bear, and then test the designs again. This is a great way to demonstrate why it's important to know your design criteria before starting a STEM challenge! Mama bear may fit on some and not others, or papa bear may fit but weigh too much and collapse the bed. Get the Goldilocks Fairy Tale STEM Challenge Here is the link to the full resource. In addition to all the steps above, the 8-page story book guides students through the engineering design process and also includes a self-evaluation check list. You’re moving to a new home with your baby! Congratulations! As parents, moving to a new home with your child can be a great way to acquaint them with a new environment. And it can be very refreshing and “on-point” to be in a new environment as a new family. Once you get to imagine yourself in your dream home with the loves of your life (your child and perhaps a partner), then it’s all going to look like a happily ever after… right? Well, that’s until you realize you have to organize the move… and be a parent at the same time. These seem like extremely daunting tasks. Can this even be possible, juggling your work and parental obligations, and having a move in tow? Turns out, you can! Here are some of the best tips on how to do a house move with a baby: Visit your new neighborhood with your baby. One of the best ways to help your baby stay calm throughout the trip is to have your child accompany you in your travel. This allows them to at least be a bit acquainted with the travel, and being in your new neighborhood. Introducing your child to your potential neighbors and bringing them to your new home can also help them be more familiar with their new house. This also gives you the opportunity to file for the necessary paperwork and documents, and even secure and clarify requirements for a variety of things, such as if you’re hiring moving companies Manhattan NY. Create a baby backpack or a bag to store your essentials during the moving period. When you move with your child, you need to focus on two main dates - the day of the actual move, and the days after you’ve moved to your new home. Make sure you have a baby backpack prepared for all the essentials your baby needs, and make sure you avoid packing anything your baby might need during the duration of the move. This means you need to have your baby’s milk and other supplies prepared and in easy access in a bag you’ll be bringing with you to your new home. This ensures your baby stays clean and healthy in the move, and you’re ready to treat and help them with any inconvenience they might have. Have a schedule that won’t compromise your baby’s routine, and your work-life balance. A lot of people have this impression that just because they have a move means their life should revolve around the move. This shouldn’t be the case. Remember, your move might be an important part of helping you have a more comfortable life, yes. But you shouldn’t do this at the expense of your personal relationships, work and livelihood, and especially your child’s routine. When you finalize your move, make sure your schedule is something you and your spouse can follow. Make sure you inform your work of your move, and your family and friends are aware of what’s happening. Try to seek advice from your pediatrician so you know what shots or other medication your baby might need for the rest of the trip. Get help from professionals for the more intensive work. Just because you want to move in with your baby doesn’t mean you should be doing everything yourself. You can always hire cross country movers and other professionals to help with the more intensive aspects of your move. In the case of movers, they’re trained and equipped with the right tools and skillset to help ensure you get your move going according to your timeline. They’ll also be able to make sure your objects and belongings stay safe throughout the rest of the travel, which is important especially if you’re focusing on doing a long distance move. Moving with a Baby: Make it Comfortable and Fun! Just because you’re moving with your baby doesn’t mean your move has to be cut short or extremely micromanaged. Your baby won’t be making your move any less comfortable or manageable, provided you do the right preparations and research. Always remember that moving with your baby can be extremely fun and comfortable, and it’s a great way to bond with each other and to have your baby experience how a move works. And isn’t it fun if you take your baby to a new place, so they get more acquainted with their environment? If you have other tips for parents out there, feel free to share them in the comments!
