Who would blame me for wanting to revisit the Groma Kolibri, so soon after my previous post on this ultraslim portable typewriter? (I must admit it feels a little like Duelling Banjos with Georg Sommeregger, with Georg plucking those strings a lot better than I can!). I also confess it is a little frustrating, as I dearly love all of these small, low-profile post-war European typewriters, but language barriers restrict what I can dig out about their development. Still, I struggle on in my researches, such is my abiding fascination with this range of portables. I mentioned in my previous Groma post that I had another Kolibri, and here it is. Also, some more close-ups of my other two Kolibris, and a comparison with a normal-size matchbox and an average-size credit-business-library card. The Kolibri is 6.5 centimetres high, or just over two-and-a-half inches (2.559). I think the original Gossen Tippa is about the same height, but I will check that out when I post on the full range of Tippas, from the Gossen through the Adler to the Litton, all of which are in my collection But getting back to the Groma: the brand name comes from combining the original company name, Maschinenfabrik G.F.Grosser, with its home town, Markersdorf, on the river Chemnitz. The company started making typewriters after Max Paul Pfau (born March 31, 1872, Saxony, Germany) returned to Chemnitz in 1924 from the US, with almost 30 years' experience in typewriter design and manufacturing under his belt. Pfau had immigrated with his family to the US in 1884, aged 12, and later worked for Remington in New York and Underwood in Hartford, as well as spending time in Woodstock, Illinois, where in 1911-12 he designed typewriters for Emerson. This was soon after Emerson's factory opened in Woodstock. During his time in the US, Pfau remained a citizen of Saxony. Richard Polt Collection, Richard Uhlig design. Pfau patented improvements. Back in Germany, Pfau applied his US-gained design expertise to Wanderer typewriters, producing this portable: The collection of the late Tilman Elster, ex the European Typewriter Project, with Will Davis Pfau then joined Gustav Friedrich Grosser's sewing machine company (founded 1872). Maschinenfabrik G.F.Grosser GmbH started its production of typewriters in 1924. In 1934 Pfau was headhunted by Torpedo typewriters. Richard Polt Collection, Pfau design Pfau was succeeded as head of design at Groma by Leopold Ferdinand Pascher. Georg tells us Pascher was a Viennese engineer. In October 1936 Pascher, based in Schweizertal, was issued with a German patent for what would become the first of the Groma ultraslim typewriters, the Gromina. Thomas Furtig Collection Pascher's application specifications describe in detail his intention to produce a typewriter "which can be carried in a small envelope". Pascher made an application for a US patent for the same design in November 1940, 13 months before the US entered the war. The patent was issued on March 7, 1944, but because of the hostilities, it was vested in the Alien Property Custodian. Thomas Furtig Collection. Note the gull-wing ribbon covers, similar to the Hermes Baby and Beaucourt Message During the war, Pascher's design for the Gromina remained on hold. With Groma's manufacturing restructure in 1951, it was finally made. Richard Polt Collection: This was the last model of the Gromina, made in 1954 Four years later, the Gromina was followed by the Kolibri. This later work was apparently taken up by Karl Ronneberger, with VEB Mechanik Groma. Following the war, as the company was in East Germany, it became known as VEB Mechanik Groma (VEB=Volkseigenen Betrieb, or "state-owned enterprise" of the German Democratic Republic [East Germany]). I mentioned the Pascher patent in my detailed look at the Rooy ultraslim typewriter in September, which is at http://oztypewriter.blogspot.com/2011/09/on-this-day-in-typewriter-history-cxiii.html But, being none the wiser then, I speculated that the design may have been for the Kolibri. As Richard Polt rightly pointed out at the time, it was for the Gromina. "The Kolibri used a different system, not involving geared typebars such as these," said Richard. This was possibly the "advance" on Pascher's work made by Ronneberger. Elsewhere, Richard questioned the accuracy in using the Kolibri in the film The Lives of Others. After all, the Kolibri was made in East Germany. Georg points out, however, that until Kolibri production ended in 1962, one of the largest customers for Groma was the West German mail-order firm and department store Neckermann. And Adwoa adds that these Groma Kolibris were relabelled as Neckermann Brilliant Juniors. Given, in the film, the typewriter has no ribbon cover (so we can see the all-red ribbon, presumably) it might well have been a Neckermann!? If we took a trip back in history, we notice various kinds of mosaic art: each with a different technique, perspective and name. The name “Opus Vermiculatum” was invented by Romans to illustrate the art of mosaics made out of tiny and minuscule Tesserae called “Vermiculi” (little worms). Through the tiniest tesseras and mosaic tiles measuring between one or two mm, a new medium became possible. With a centimeter-long tile, artisans could obtain five rows of tesserae creating a wide variation of colors. Micro mosaics or mosaic “Vermiculatum” are made using the same method used for bigger tiles. These precious mosaics were made in a laboratory on an autonomous support system and installed into a floor. It was easy for Romans to remove them from the floor and move them to another. Micro mosaics are very delicate and their utmost size is usually limited to 20 or 40 centimeters, needing a great amount of time and patience. We thought of helping you discover the world and art of micro mosaics. You can also find lines of luxurious jewelry made in micro mosaics, which can be created using precious stones such as Fluorite. • Method The method of mosaic creation is mainly involved in direct placing or gluing the mosaic tiles into the corresponding surface. This method is well suited to surfaces that have a three-dimensional quality. Direct method is also applied to small and transportable projects like jewelries or micro mosaic artworks. The foremost advantage of the direct method is that the final result of the mosaic could be gradually visible, which allows editing the placement of the tiles if necessary. The principle method of micro mosaics is based on tiles made through a spinning procedure rather than the traditional technique with the hammer and hardie. The spinning procedure allows the creation of long thin rods less than a millimeter in dimension. • Abstract Micro Mosaic Although abstract micro mosaics seem to be easy to create, they usually take a week or two to be ready. The difficult part is placing these 1 millimeter tile pieces (tesserae) while harmonizing colors in a non pictorial or impressionistic manner. Several colors can interact in synchronization to illustrate different perspective and visions. Click here to explore many micro mosaic designs . Floral, Abstract and Colorful Micro Mosaics. • Micro Mosaic Painting Reproductions Around 1600 right after St. Peter’s Basilica was completed, the calamity occurred: clouds started to form in the immense interior of the Basilica and the divine paintings of famous artists were decaying from humidity. A desperate search for a long lasting material began. Right after the artistic staff of St. Peter’s noticed that the architectural mosaics of the Basilica had retained their color and hadn’t decayed, they started experimenting. They began by modifying the mosaic artworks directly and then began to reproduce paintings using mosaic tiles instead of paint. In order to reproduce master paintings, they had to develop thousands of new shades of tesserae. Traditional glass mosaic tiles were too shiny, the staff had to find a mosaic material without a reflective surface typical to a painting: marble mosaic tiles. Here are some artworks reproduced by Mozaico. Van Gogh – Reproduction Picasso – Reproduction René Magritte – Reproduction • Figurative Micro Mosaics Although the origin of mosaics is credited to the Greeks, the art-form was also used in Assyria, Egypt, Persia and other ancient civilizations. The art of portrait was discovered in Ancient Greece and grew especially Roman sculpture, where sitters demanded figurative and realistic portraits. Realistic portraits of the archetypal appearance emerged again in the late Middle Ages. Since then, figures have been illustrated in tomb monuments, donor portraits, miniatures of illuminated manuscripts, panel paintings, finally mosaic murals and micro mosaic artworks. • Micro Mosaic Accessories In the 20th century, artists renewed their interest in mosaics and this art form extended among masters such as Gustav Klimt, Chagall, Fernand Léger, Joan Miro, as well as by Antoni Gaudí, whose mosaics in Parc Guell blow our minds with wonder. As micro mosaic art developed, it became an ornamental technique for belongings, snuffboxes, jewelry, paintings and furniture. The focal themes reproduced in micro-mosaics were early monuments of Rome, religious and spiritual icon reproductions. At the end of the 18th century, a Roman artisan imagined a different path for micro-mosaics, something that was never previously made or thought of. He began his artistic journey by creating micro mosaic watches and jewelry. Now that you have learned about micro mosaics, would you think of owning or creating a micro mosaic artwork? TL:DRModified & recapped, with UK power supply. More brutal than standard, sounds greatModificationsThe Micro Limiter might seem like an odd unit to modify but, having recapped & modified quite a few compressors recently, I was pretty sure it would benefit. And so it turns out: when recapped & upgraded the Micro Limiter sounds bigger & betterThe power supply has been updated with much larger reservoir caps and better decoupling. The tiny audio coupling caps have been replaced with much larger bipolar caps which really improves the bass end, making it smoother & better defined. Even with quite a lot of gain reduction you can feel the weight of the bassWe’ve come up with a modified release timing setup. This shortens the fastest release time but still allows a relatively long release when set to maximum. The values were determined by listening tests and the results are a big improvement over a stock Micro Limiter. The difference between the shortest & longest release settings is more pronounced and there is greater sonic variationDescriptionThe Micro Limiter is a 1/3U stereo limiter which is famous for smashing drums, nuking snares, mullering cymbals and squashing bass guitarAlthough Alesis call it a limiter, at low compression levels – when the green LEDs are lit – it uses a ratio between 2:1 and 8:1. With the yellow LEDs on CR is around 10:1 and, with the final red LEDs lit, 16:1. It uses a soft-knee approach, so there is always some compression going on, but higher input levels means more compression and a higher ratioThere’s no Threshold control – just Input, Release & Output controls and an In/Out switch. The back panel is equally minimal with input & output jacks and a power socketRelease time is the key here – with fast release times and lots of compression you get pumping & breathing but slowing up the release changes the character of the sound immensely. At long release times the Micro Limiter is in gain reduction all the time but the depth of compression is still driven by the input signal. It’s possible to use huge amounts of gain reduction but still maintain articulation on signals like bass guitar. In this respect it’s more flexible than one of my favourites, the The Micro Limiter has another big advantage over its competitors – it’s a stereo device. This means stereo drum ambience, parallel buses and backing vocals are all targets for some serious compression. It will do subtle compression as well as vicious but it excels at the nasty stuff. Use your for Nice compression and the Micro Limiter for Dirty“Well, thus far, my favourite use has been on overheads; you can squish ’em pretty hard without strange things happening to the sound”“I still have three of them. I like them on drums, vocals and acoustic guitar”“Really cool as a parallel comp on snare and voice”“Squishes like there is no morning”“What a fun little box! It sounds pretty good on everything I’ve tried it on”“Super squasher, always good fun making the whole room come through the snare mic. Good for aggressive up front vocals too”“I’m loving it as a parallel drum comp, really trashy but nice and thick sounding too”ConditionIn very good, used condition. With UK power supply.
