This is the perfect amount of snow. Just a dusting is my favorite. The vines and topiaries look beautiful out side this mansion, almost as if they are covered in powdered sugar. via The groundhog saw his shadow this week so we can expect more winter weather and probably more snow in the next six weeks.

This week was a short week due to a holiday and a snow day, but it gave us enough time to dive into how life was different in the Medieval days compared to today! Through our research, we have found out that things were very different in those days! To show how things were different, we decided to turn the inside of our room into a great hall. We created a Then/Now T-chart to organize the differences we had learned. Unfortunately I forgot to get a picture of it. Then we used it to decide what we needed to create. The kids learned that in the Medieval days, they did not have electricity so they did not have lights. They created torches to provide "light" for our room. The torches are also providing us with "light" all over the inside of our room but it was hard to get a picture that truly showed the effect! They embrace our doorway, promethium board, and windows! Next week, they are going to add "candle" chandeliers in the kitchen and over the banquet table. They will also make "candles" for the banquet table. They made a giant fire place at the end of the great hall to provide us with warmth since we learned castles didn't have furnaces. One group decided to turn our home living area into a Medieval style kitchen. We learned that instead of stoves like we have today, they used cook fires. We still need to find a pot to hang over the fire! Our friend below is creating a soup. They learned that instead of faucets and sinks, they used wells and buckets. They also learned that servants had to carry buckets of water warmed over the fire all the way up to the master bathroom to fill up the bath! Much more work than turning on a faucet! They also used ashes and sheeps fat for soap! They created a well with a bucket for the castle kitchen so they would have water. They have learned other differences such as how they entertained themselves that we will explore further next week. The kids also explored the people who lived in the castles. The nobels were called lords and ladies. They learned that the nobels were leaders and their job was to take care of their people. They were the ones who worked to solve the problems as leaders are supposed to do! Nobel families had coat of arms with pictures that represented their families. The kids created coat of arms, some for us to hang and some to use as shields as the knights did. They studied how they dressed. We learned that married women had to keep their hair covered. That is why they wore beautiful hats. The girls worked on beautiful princess hats and both boys and girls created crowns beautiful enough for kings and queens. They are in the process of creating bracelets also. They also learned that the servants and some knights also lived in the castle and we talked about some of their jobs. They noticed that jobs were harder to do back then because they did not have the technology that we have today! Here are some other things going on during our exploration time! Castle building with these awesome casltle blocks a wonderful teacher in my building found for me at Big Lots! Thank you Brittany! Because of the sub zero weather we are having, the clay on our window sill is as hard as a rock. We decided they would make good bases for wire sculptures to work those finger muscles! Someone asked what "sculptures" means! We discussed how paintings are 2 dimensional art because they are flat. Sculptures are 3 dimensional art because they pop out! Of course they made the connection to our focus on the difference between 2 dimentional and 3 dimentional shapes! The students created a small winter world area using materials I set out for them. They will add more to this as more materials are set out. Stay tuned as next week we will talk about entertainment, knights and castle defense!

Hello stampers. Happy Friday! Today I am sharing some creations using Crane of Fortune. My suite just arrived this week but these projects are all by Stesha Bloodhart who is a member of the Artisan Design team. When I saw this set in the mini catalog I wasn't sure if I would like it. It was also demonstrated at the last online event I attended with Stampin'Up! and that put me over the top! Crane of Fortune This suite is very ephemeral or dream-like.The paper is in shades of grey and soft succulent intertwined with gold. Simply stunning!
Edit: Video added I am often asked about my paper cuts, many of you would like to know how I go about doing them. I begin with a piece of paper that measures 12" x 12" which is then folded......there are several sites that show how to create paper snowflakes, you can see the folding steps here Fold (you will notice in the following photos that the excess at the top gets cut away) I then draw the image I want to repeat. It will need to fit onto one section of the folded paper I unfold the paper and using a light box, transfer the image onto one section, then refold. I use a set of mirrors to see exactly what I will get once I have finished cutting The tools I use Staples hold the layers tightly together, punched holes allow for easier maneuvering of the scissors. Now, I am ready to make those cuts, small sharp scissors are an absolute must! More cuts are made...... notice that I am cutting so that I always have something solid to hold on to. I am showing you lots of photos so you can see that I "plan" each cut Cutting is complete Carefully unfold. It is delicate and must be handled gently Once I have it unfolded, I use a dry iron to press it flat. This one has 12 sections and is made up of birds and bees. Whatever you choose to draw, you need to be sure that everything is "connected" otherwise it will all just fall apart. Here is a video of the whole process Below is a sampling of some other themed papercuts I have created using this same method. Even though I had been designing this way, it had not occurred to me to cut snowflakes until I had taken a workshop conducted by Kathy K Wylie.....she takes "snowflakes"to a whole other level. If you seriously wish to create your own unique snowflakes and want to learn how to translate them into fabric, I suggest you get yourself a copy of Kathy K Wylie's book, Sewflakes

Hello there my craft friends! Today we over at Just Add Ink have another creative challenge for you. This week its a fantstic Just Chose Two Challenge, chosen by Just Add Ink team member Kim Badelt - Just Add Ink #612 | Just Choose Two Challenge. This week's Just Choose Two challenge is a real mixed bag with us choosing from Fur, Clouds or Stitching. I love anything to do with stitching on cards, faux or real, so that was a no brainer for me and then my most recent Stampin' Up! order with the new Storybook Gnome DSP helped me to choose fur with the gorgeous images of the woodland animals. I've kept the card fairly CAS (Clean and Simple). I'm really loving clean lines and clean cards at the moment. There is beauty in the simplicity of the card and to sometimes pull back from all the 'fluff and stuff' really lets the products shine and in this case lets the DSP shine. I've started the card with some Basic White layers and then used the pattern from the Storybook Gnome DSP that looks like a knitted jumper or cross stitch/embroidery. This was another element, along with the Stitched Rectangles, to add to my 'stitched' element. Well, I think it looks like it has stitching on it so that is all that matters. This is the super cute Stampin' Up! Storybook Gnome DSP. If you could only pick one thing from this suite then this DSP would be it. There is so much you can do with it and the artwork in this DSP is fantastic. The animals for my fur element were fussy cut from this sheet of the DSP. Just cut them out and them add them to your card and you have a quick and simple card done in no time. Aren't these animals just super cute? I've really kept my embellishments on this card super simple with some Balmy Blue & White Double-Stitched Ribbon (another stitched element) and some Linen Thread. If you were to recreate this card then you could keep it CAS like what I did or really step it up. It all comes down to personal choice. There are lots of AMAZING creations from the rest of the Just Add Ink Design Team on the JAI Blog. Go and check out to see what 'two' elements they all used this week and then while you are there you can see how you can enter your project. Can't wait to see what 'two' you used.
