The current Middleham Castle, in North Yorkshire, was started in 1190 by Robert FitzRandolph near to the site of the earlier Norman 'motte and bailey' castle of the same name. This earth mounds of the first castle are still visible today on an adjoining hilltop. www.flickr.com/photos/barryslemmings/sets/72157628723762047/ to see the full set. Middleham came to prominence in the 15th century during the dyniastic wars incorrectly known as the Wars of the Roses. As one of the homes of the influential Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick (Warwick the Kingmaker) it also became the home of the younger Yorkist sons George Duke of Clarence and Richard Duke of Gloucester (the future King Richard III) who Warwick took in after their father, Richard Duke of York, was killed at the Battle of Wakefield in 1460. Their eldest brother Edward Earl of March (as King Edward IV) was briefly imprisoned here in 1469 by Warwick but when the York brothers overthrew Warwick and killed him at the Battle of Barnet in 1471 Richard of Gloucester married Warwick's daughter Anne and Middleham became their main home. Their only son, Edward of Middleham, was born here but also died here aged 10. His death - and his father's later death at the Battle of Bosworth - effectively put an end to the Yorkist branch of the Plantagenet dynasty. Many Norman castles were rebuilt in stone and normally on the same site. Middleham's rebuilding on an adjacent site appears to have been because the small hill of the motte and bailey original would have precluded building the huge keep which lies at the centre of the present building. However moving site would also have allowed the FitxRandolphs to live securely in the old castle until the new structure was sufficiently advanced to have been defendable. Being located in the wilder and more war-like north such factors had to be considered. The great central keep dates to around 1180/1190 while the first outside stone walls are 13th century. Further improvements were made in later centuries with the great stone keep being converted to more comfortable accommodation. The keep's changing role is reflected in the fact that it was later connected by two bridges to apartments and service quarters built against the outside wall. The present castle is concentric (keep within the walls) but there was another adjacent bailey which is now lost. The original gatehouse faced this bailey and is now reduced to ruins and foundations. The present entrance is a later gatehouse and faces the present village.
