There is no fluff and no busy work in my reading units. TEACHERS LIKE YOU SAID… ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Amy S. says, "OBSESSED!!!! I am teaching summer school and I'm normally a math teacher but I am also teaching them ELA. I found this and I honestly wish I taught ELA so I could buy the rest of the novel studies and do them! This is the way you should teach ELA. Easily able to teach all standards through reading notebook, vocabulary, discussion. Lesson plans are soooo thorough. I highly suggest all upper elementary ELA teachers look into your resources!" ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Sarah V. says, "I really appreciate how this unit is organized and how thought-provoking it has been. We are only a few days in and the students are loving the socratic seminar setup and I, being a newbie with this type of discussion setup, am enjoying all of the instructions and lack of busy work for students to just get done. I'll be purchasing more for the novels that I teach! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Krista L. says, "Students are thrilled to be talking about the book instead of doing a ton of comprehension questions. My students’ writing improved because they are hyper-focused on answering the discussion question and are actually using textual evidence to answer, because instead of 5-10 questions, they have one. The vocabulary and extra comprehension questions are very useful as well.

This biography of education activist Malala Yousafzai includes informational texts, and activities that begins with a pre-reading activity regarding activism. Many students may not be familiar with the meaning of the word are even how activism relates to many historical figures they might have already studied (such as Martin Luther King, Jr.). Discussion of the topics on the graphic organizer is a great way to introduce the concept and discuss the forms activism takes. Later, after the students have read the passages, it would be great to again refer to the topic and talk about why Malala is considered an activist and the methods that she has used and uses today. (The activist activity page is not numbered so that it can be used at any time, before, during or after the passages are read.) This resource includes two reading passages, both about a page and a half in length. Both texts are illustrated and both include a vocabulary activity and a separate page of comprehension/opinion questions. Student work concludes with a short M/C quiz that covers both reading texts. A full answer key is supplied for all objective work. The first passage begins with Malala’s early life in Pakistan and the suppression of female education and ends with her identity as a blogger being revealed. Part 2 deals with her being shot, her recovery in England, and her life today. It includes information on the awards she has been given. You can find a similar post for 5th grade and 3rd grade at these links! It's no secret that read alouds enrich your classroom. (If you're not convinced of that, check out this post!) I love taking the time to choose the perfect novel. But since there are SO many great options out there, it's hard to narrow it down. So now what? How do you choose the read aloud that's best for you? Typically, I do a new read aloud every month. Dragging a book on for too long will cause a loss of interest. Plus students begin to forget details from the beginning of the book before we even finish. I also consider the needs of my class. Are we studying something in Social Studies I can reinforce? Are we experiencing a social problem (i.e. the need to build empathy)? Choosing a book that my students need will ALWAYS make the read aloud more meaningful. After these considerations, I head to my list of favorite novels! You can find those below: These are my TOP 10 novel choices for 4th grade Fish in a Tree: In this realistic fiction text, Ally struggles with her identity and success in school. As the story progresses, she is diagnosed with dyslexia and finally gets the help she needs. >>View my read aloud companion<< Among the Hidden: Luke lives in a dystopian world and as a "shadow child" must stay hidden from others. Frankweiler: The main character of this novel, Claudia, is bored and frustrated with her life. So she convinces her brother to run away from home and head to the museum of art. >>View my read aloud companion<< When I use these novels as read alouds, I've developed a bookmark and journal system for each book. As I read, I keep my students thinking with 2 questions. One question is asked before I read, the second is asked after. Sometimes we do these orally, sometimes in journal format. That's it!
