America has given us some of the greatest (and worst) Menswear moments. Many of the most interesting have been created by Ukrainian-born Jew, Nudie Cohn known as "The Rodeo Tailor".His name might not be familiar, but if you have even a passing interest in American music, you will no doubt have seen his famous Nudie sui
RODEO TAILORING: We specialize in authentic vintage style American handwork pieces. And few styles represent this more than vintage style rodeo tailoring inspired by the work of Turk and Nudie. All of the work on this piece, in chainstitch and blanket stitch is done by hand, representing more than 50 hours of hand sewing in this iconic American style. Everything that we do is 100 percent custom, and nothing is more custom than a suit like this, with images designed for the individual client. ABOUT THIS SUIT: We made this suit for an Australian actor to wear to an awards show. And all of the images are chosen for their personal and national significance----from the rock lobsters on the front to the Betty Cuthbert roses that cover the piece. The suit is made from an American woven wool gabardine and covered with 100s of Swarovski crystals. THE MUSLIN FITTING PROCESS: The price of these suits includes our most thorough fitting process. For these suits, we ask you to provide measurements (that can be taken at home---and we will provide a measuring tape) and then we cut and sew a complete mock-up of the suit in cotton fabric. You try this on and send us digital pictures of yourself wearing it. Based on these pictures, we will adjust for posture, asymmetry, and preference in addition to fit. This means that every aspect of the suit can be completely customized to your body and look in every way. These suits are guaranteed to fit just the way you want them, and if anything doesn't feel right, we are glad to make further adjustments. HOW TO ORDER: Contact us through Etsy or by email ([email protected]) so that we can get started designing something just for you.

ABOUT THIS SUIT: Our embroidery looks very different from most modern embroidery. You could say that it is "graphic" vs "painterly"----and this would capture much of the difference. You could also say that it is concerned more with line and shape than with shading and depth. But almost the entire difference is that we conceive our embroidery as embroidery----that is drawn out by hand on pattern pieces----versus artists that begin with a painted digital image or a photograph and then translate this into embroidery. Drawing is inevitably a more conscious and thought-filled process than painting. In our technique, we find ourselves spending time thinking about what the essence of a frog is: About how its dynamism and movement can be suggested with a minimum of line and color. Or in the case of the bees, considering Napoleonic bees and their stylization and incorporating a couching technique in order to capture this historical meaning and essence. The back of the jacket symbolizes bicycle trips that the client takes in the desert. THE MUSLIN FITTING PROCESS: The price of these suits includes our most thorough fitting process. Western shirts and chainstitch embroidery go together like peanut butter and jelly. Popularized by Nudie Cohn in 1940s Hollywood, the "Nudie Suit" was worn by musical giants like Johnny Cash, Graham Parsons, and Dolly Parton. Chainstitched on a hundred-year-old machine in San Antonio, Texas by Lunchroom Anxiety, each patch is hand-cranked and one-of-a-kind. Add a patch to a shirt for extra flair or collect multiple for a souvenir-esc jacket. 3 x 5 inch, sew on patch
From full-on glitter jumpsuits to bootcut denim, the VMAs were, as usual, one of menswear's wildest nights. Here are the highlights.
There is an impression of country music as wholesome, simple, and rooted in the conservative values of middle America and the South. One of the many counters to that argument is Nudie Cohn and his Hollywood-sewn “Nudie suits.” These fashion masterpieces are all excess, sometimes with sexy images of naked ladies, pot leaves, pills and poppies, worn by everyone from Hank Williams to Keith Richards to Ronald Reagan. On top of all of that seedy flash, the sequins and flourish is downright camp—he designed for Liberace, and check out the Nudie suit that Elton John wore in this ad for “Rocket Man.” Nudie’s beginnings were far humbler than the “country luxury” aesthetic he came to create. Born in 1902 in Ukraine, Nuta Kotlyarenko was so poor that he often had mismatched shoes collected from cast-offs (an indignity he later paid homage to by intentionally wearing mismatched boots—though generally of his own high-end custom design). After immigrating to America and changing his name at age 11, Cohn followed in his boot-maker father’s footsteps and apprenticed as a tailor. In 1940, he and his wife moved to LA and started Nudie’s Rodeo Tailors in their garage, quickly...
Jeans made in a beautiful and starchy 12.5 oz. Japanese selvage denim. Kurabo Mills in Japan has with this denim replicated an old denim fabric. The original denim was found on the west coast of the USA and was dated back to the goldmine era. With some 120 years on its back, we can just assume that it looked somewhat weathered. Once it reached Kurabo it was analysed in detail with the aim of recreating the look of the denim when it was fresh from the loom. Being known for their meticulous eye for detail Kurabo was likely one of the best suited for the task. What Kurabo found was that much of the character came from the spinning method used and the color of the weft yarns. In par with the standards of its time, the ring spun yarns had an uneven structure and thickness. The weft yarns were also found to be far from white, likely consisting of unbleached cotton. Kurabo replicated the yarn structure, weft color and dyed the warp with 12 dips of indigo. The finished denim was then sewn with contrasting tobacco thread to these Grim Tim's. Greatness!
