Okay so my younger cousins bar mitzvah invite came in the mail today. The suggested attire is diamonds and denim. What does that even look like?
I awoke to a gray dawn with temps in the 60s and rising. Patuxent NWR opens at sunrise, so I went early to beat the commuter traffic, and saw some nice birds, but with lousy light. Sometimes I think I’d … Continue reading →

We were late for lily season in Washington State. I did find a small stem trail side with an open blossom and a bud and when I returned the next morning the bud had opened. These blossoms are small compared to our Carolina species (L superbum, L. michauxii) with strongly reflexed petals. My field guide says that the long stamens are tightly clustered.

On December 16, 2011 we made our yearly trip to Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in San Antonio, New Mexico. Bosque is a nature photographer's paradise!!!! Every winter thousands of Sandhill Cranes, Snow Geese, and many other migrating birds make Bosque their winter home. New Mexico's amazing sunsets, multicolored mountains and bright blue skies make for…
A new breeder re-appears in the Pee Dee on each April visit. Part of the fun. There is now a constant symphony of sounds coming from the fields, forests, and marshes. Late yesterday, I sat along Wildlife Drive and listened to a bittern, a wood thrush, the plaintive call of female wood ducks, a prothonotary warbler, great crested flycatchers, and an irritated great blue heron.
There are more beautiful places in Texas than I can count. Few, however, compare to Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge.

Ahhh but time flies. Earlier this year I happened upon a fledgling barred owl at this covered bridge/photo blind in the Pee Dee NWR. At that time, songs of prothonotary and hooded warblers filled the air. Today leaves are falling and the piercing calls of pileated woodpeckers, shafted flickers, and blue jays break the silence. I did see 3 wood ducks to the right of the bridge.
I can not resist posting one more image from my Snowy Owl encounter at Forsythe NWR last Friday. I just love the "half smile" and the wonderful fine facial plumage. A nice moment and a birding memory to cherish.
