Folklore customs dating back centuries are suddenly cool with a new generation keen to connect with the planet and defy the establishment
For those of you who think May Day is a distress signal, May 1st is a marvellously hotchpotch day of festivities which combines traditions and superstitions from Paganism, Gaelic, Christianity and even chimney sweeps.
Since one of the underlying themes of Myth & Moor pertains to folklore in art and life, the folkloric celebration of winter's end here in Chagford seems right on topic. Last year, we held a public May Day Procession, and...
Te Hobby Horse, or Obby Oss which takes to the streets on the eve of the first of May each year, with accompanying musicians and rival horses, for four days. In fact there are two rival hobby horses, the Sailor's Horse and the Town Horse.[ They appear on May Eve (called "Show Night"), on May Day morning (when they salute the sunrise at a crossroads on the outskirts of town), 2 May and 3 May (when a ceremony called "The Bootie" takes place in the evening called "Bootie Night" at part of town called Cher). Each horse is made of a boat-shaped wooden frame, pointed and built up at each end, which is carried on the dancer's shoulders. As at Padstow, his face is hidden by a mask attached to a tall, pointed hat. The top surface of the horse is covered with ribbons and strips of fabric. A long fabric skirt, painted with rows of multicoloured roundels, hangs down to the ground all round. A long tail is attached to the back of the frame. Each horse is accompanied by a small group of musicians and attendants. The Town Horse is accompanied by "Gullivers", dressed similarly to the horse but without the large frame; as at Padstow, smaller, children's horses have sometimes been constructed. The horses' visits are (or were) believed to bring good luck. The first of May has been a festival day in Minehead since 1465.

'I was recently researching May Day traditions and came across the Hobby Horse, an ambiguous character, often also found in association with morris dancers and mummers plays. Paradoxically these horses can be found representing fertility and virility or their opposites of winter and barrenness depending on the particular context and folk tradition. This indicates a nature that is truly primal – sex and death entwined. The horses are liminal characters found at the cross points of the year – traditionally Samhain (beginning of winter) and Beltane (start of summer). Some people have previously asserted links that could stretch back through time to pre-Christian pagan ceremonies, which, if true, would make them some of the last surviving relics of the pagan deep past. Unfortunately the evidence for this is tenuous and now largely discounted - no current tradition can be reliably dated beyond the early 19th century, though the horses are depicted and mentioned much further back, for example by Shakespere. There are many diverse types of hobby horse to be found within Britain and beyond, including those made from real horse skulls such as the Welsh Mari Lwyd and the dark & stylised Padstow ‘Obby ‘Oss. My image is a composite of the various designs and types traditionally found in Britain, I have also played up the sinister aspect of this character in a darker image… although many horses use black, skulls and eerie mask designs, some can also be more cheerful with bright colours, ribbons and flower adornments.' Thanks for looking at my item x

Here are my pictures of this years colossal birthday event. It was so strange to see the mountain covered in lush green leaves, and not just small buds on the trees and barely any grass. I don't remember seeing the ritual circle looking so green - all this rain these past two years has done wonders for the mountain. This was my 11th Beltane - I am getting very used to attending this event now, each of them different but wonderful...
