Building an understanding of Earth is important, but if your school is anything like mine, I was provided very little in the way of material for teaching social studies in my elementary classroom. I created a resource for covering the 5 oceans of the world in a format that allows teachers to start teaching right away with little hassle. I was teaching the seven continents, and decided that a lesson on the 5 oceans only made sense to cover as well. This resource includes a slide show of key facts

Friends~In honor of SHARK Week on Discovery Channel, I am going to share some of my most favorite shark lessons and activities! Be sure to check out the different fin cams on the site above. AWESOME! I like to start with a KWL before we read. It is always interesting how much background knowledge your student's have on a topic or what information they have that is correct. Here is a quick tip: Make your KWL on a huge sheet of bulletin board paper in the shape of a shark. Then pass out white triangles (TEETH) for the students to add their thinking on. Tape the teeth to the KWL. I leave out (Teeth) in our research center during the week. We add to the learned section as we answer our questions. We even add questions as we learn. I love keeping it interactive! You can even serve bugles (TEETH) while you read a shark book! They make a great story souvenir for students to take home! I also have collected several shark teeth samples from trips to the beach. I always place them in the science center for my students to explore and measure. I got the shark teeth pictures from Enchanted Learning. I love the world of sharks! They are amazing creatures with tons for us to learn about. One of my favorite books to introduce shark facts is Sharks! by Gail Gibbons. Her books are always perfect for sharing facts and diagrams in a picture book kind of way. Be sure to have a tape measure on hand while you read this because it is so cool to show the students just how long these creatures are as you read. After we read this book, we measure the sharks in students. I love the look on my kiddo's faces when we get to the whale shark! (I pre measure yarn in the lengths of the sharks below.) I then lay the yarn out and invite students to lay next to the yarn on the floor. They fill in the table below. I then share this video! I love this book for my guided reading groups! The pictures are fantastic and the students are always super engaged. My kiddos also love my Flipping Fins Math Game. It is so simple to play. Just grab some plastic sharks like the ones below. Print out the center and you are all set. Click the picture below to grab a FREE copy of my Flipping Fins Math Game! If you are interested in more SHARK fun click on my SHARK file below. It is filled with more fantastic shark learning fun!

Howdy! I am Mr. Greg from The Kindergarten Smorgasboard. My real name is Greg Smedley-Warren. I have been teaching for 11 years. I spent a year teaching fifth grade, two years in second grade and am now in my 9th year in Kindergarten. Kindergarten is my passion and my calling but honestly, that wasn’t how it started. When I was moved to Kindergarten (not voluntarily!) I called my mommy and cried. But on the first day, I fell in love and knew that Kindergarten is where I belonged. I have remained in Kindergarten ever since. I plan to never leave the classroom as the kids are what drive me to continue my growth as a teacher and person.
What is it about sharks that is so alluring? Their size? Ferocity? I'm not sure. I would prefer they stay in the ocean and I stay out of the ocean. But my kids (and many many other people) seem to love watching sharks, learning about sharks, and just general shark stuff. So I'll bite (excuse

Wow! The last three days have been so much fun with all of the freebies from the Jackpot, plus shopping till I couldn't shop any longer during the TPT sale...I think I'm going through a little bit of shopping withdrawal today. Which means, I just might have added a few more things to my wishlist after seeing all the goodies everyone else bought! This week, we've been continuing our oceans unit, and my kiddos are really enjoying their time as marine biologists! After studying different types of marine biologists on this really cool website, my students filled out job applications to become marine biologists (and to pick their animal to study). Then, we put on our pinterest-inspired scuba gear and dove into our research! We took trips to the library and to the computer lab to do some researching on PebbleGo, and the kids have been working on their All About Books the last few days. Hopefully we'll get them published early next week--Time seems to be rushing by and we've still got so much to do! Yikes! Another oceans activity that went well this week was a quick sink or float experiment that seemed to really amaze my class. I got the idea for it a few years ago here, and I just updated the graphic organizer to go along with it. Click the picture to download it for FREE:). All you need to do is prepare two bowls of water--one fresh and one very salty. Then, have the students place the items in the bowls and record if they sink or float. My kiddos were all amazed to see that the crayon sunk in the fresh water and floated in the salt. The starburst was also a tricky one. It floated for a bit in the saltwater, then it sunk! Well, I'm off to bed early because tomorrow is my second-to-last day of 6:40am bus duty! Have a good one!

Well, as always I end up creating something to go along with a unit and don't finish it until the unit is done and over...so I guess I will have these songs for next year! Finished these "Continents and Oceans" themed song posters on a Friday night sitting in the living room with my family. They all thought I was pretty goofy dictating (talk to text) and singing into my iPad. There is a song for each continent and ocean, and follow a catchy tune (I'm a Little Teapot, Home on the Range, Scooby Doo, Flinstones, If You're Happy and You Know It, The Wheels on the Bus, etc.) to help teach a few key details about each of the places on planet earth. You can find this song set HERE at my TPT store.

The ocean is incredibly fascinating. The amount of water, how it moves, and the life that is inside it. These books cover almost every part of the ocean in one way or another. Some are fiction, to add a story while learning, while others are non-fiction and give the facts. They are books that your

The ocean is divided into different layers. The zones differ in temperature, water pressure and available nutrients. Marine organisms live in different zones according to the amount of sunlight that reaches there. Sunlight Zone: More than 90% of marine life lives in the Sunlight Zone. Twilight Zone: Animals that live in the twilight zone must be able to survive cold temperatures, an increase in water pressure and dark waters. There are no plants in...
