A month ago I saw a victorian portrait of a young lady sitting and holding a book, painted by Gabriel Schachinger. I loved it so much, that I spent the very evening patterning the dress. I had always overlooked the princess line as boring, but now I have changed my mind completely. The simplicity can be very dramatic. The dress is made of dark ivory duchess silk satin and silk brocade. It's lined with cotton sateen and trimmed with marabou feathers. It is machine sewn and hand finished. The dress pattern is based on the 1878 afternoon dress from The Cut of Women's Clothes. The dress is a very simple without the short vest. Maybe even a little too simple for my taste. Much better: I wore it over my combination underwear and 1880's corset, a trained cotton petticoat and a corset cover. The construction: As it's a simple style so the construction is very straight forward. Each piece was flatlined with the cotton and after sewing the seams, the seam allowances were whip stitched to the lining. Then the hem was faced with the same cotton. The collar is the bias binding type that you see often in this and the previous era. The lacing holes are hand sewn by whip stitching. I decided to leave it unboned as it is meant to be just a house dress and because I've gotten an impression that leaving a bodice unboned was sometimes encouraged to get a natural, conforming look from some victorian writings. For the little vest, I cut the top part of my dress mock-up in to two pieces an used them as a pattern. The vest was also flatlined with cotton. I faced the edges with bias cut cotton, made the fabric covered buttons, stitched the button holes using button hole stitch and trimmed it with the feathers. The feather boa is whip stitched on the edges. And the portrait. My dress ended up being quite modest compared to the one in the portrait. And somehow it has a completely different feel, but I don't care. Gabriel Schachinger, Das Vergissmeinnicht, 1886
One Of A Kind Underbust Corset 22" Waist The corset is very light cream coloured, not white. This corset will fit 24" up to 26" Front length is approximately 11" longest point, including ruffled ribbon trim. 14 flat steel bones are distributed all around the corset. If you need any advice on sizing don't be afraid to ask for help. I know how confusing it can be buying a corset especially if it is your first. READY TO SHIP When buying a corset it is recommended that you buy one 2"-6" smaller than your than your natural waist measurement. It is recommended that when first wearing your corset that you lace it a little bit looser than you intend to normally, this helps the corset to adjust to the pressure evenly, and in turn adapt to your body shape better. Blessed Be xxxx

Underwear: The Fashion History by Alison Carter (New York: Drama, 1992) Few things capture people's attention like a corset... even if it's empty. I certainly wouldn't have captured anyone's attention with this bare wall, but what follows is a plan to make it a little more exciting. I intend to draw a clothes line were victorian undergarments are pinned along it - my reference books and inspiration for this project. Support and Seduction: A History of Corsets and Bras by Beatrice Fontanel (New York: Abrams, 1997) You may remember this photograph from a past Valentine's post. There's nothing like an actual photograph for accuracy. Support and Seduction: A History of Corsets and Bras by Beatrice Fontanel (New York: Abrams, 1997) On my clothes line will hang a Victorian bra. The ad above shows what is probably the first sports bra. Described as perfect for the ladies who practice tennis and horseback riding, ideal to wear under light clothing and bathing suits. Underwear: The Fashion History by Alison Carter (New York: Drama, 1992) Also hanging, a frilly knickerbocker and chemisette. Underwear: The Fashion History by Alison Carter (New York: Drama, 1992) No room on the line for crinolettes and crinolines... Underwear: The Fashion History by Alison Carter (New York: Drama, 1992) ...but black hosiery, certainly. Do click on the images to enlarge and read the descriptions - priceless. Underwear: The Fashion History by Alison Carter (New York: Drama, 1992) Sorry, but long-johns just did not make the cut. Above is a rough sketch of my Victorian clothes line. I added white gloves even if they're not undies, but I bet they were always being laundered. I cut out the pieces of garments. I drew a scaled version of my laundry wall. Used my cut-outs to move them around along the clothes line, to find the right positioning. And drew the Victorian undergarments directly on to the sheet. This will be my reference guide for when I'm ready to paint them on the wall.

About Vintage still life photograph of a white antique corset on black "My Grandmother's Corset" by David Sokosh 17 x 11 inches unframed - Wet Plate Collodion on Aluminum, diptych each panel is 8.5 x 11 inches 25.5 x 19 inches in black frame with non-glare glass Signed, lower right This one-of-a-kind figurative photograph of an antique corset was made by Hudson Valley photographer, David Sokosh, in 2018. The artist uses a Victorian camera to capture images directly on aluminum using the 19th century wet plate collodion photographic process. About the work: The self-proclaimed “geeky scientist”, David Sokosh, has long held a fascination with vintage technologies and aesthetics. In addition to his other interests (clock-making, vintage car rebuilding) it’s no surprise that Sokosh favors the 19th century photographic process of Wet Plate Collodion in his own image making. Sokosh uses an authentic Victorian lens fitted to a handmade camera to photograph staged scenes in a daylight studio in Claverack, NY. His tintypes are a far cry from geeky; sophisticated still-lifes are mixed with contemporary (and sexy) subject matter. But no matter the contents, each photograph is veiled with the illusion of time past. All plates are unique, however, he occasionally will photograph the same subject several times to mimic multiples. The selection on view in this exhibit brings together imagery of the living and the mythical in a century old time-hop. Artist Statement: In the era of digital photography and mural-sized color enlargements, I am part of the renaissance in hand-crafted photography, on an intimate scale. Using the mid-nineteenth century technique of Wet Plate Collodion, I create unique photographic pieces on metal, which are sometimes presented as objects, to be held in the hand. In our world of digital, mass-produced, photography, I am drawn to the hand-crafted, one-of-a-kind nature of these photographs. I’m a post-industrial person, living in a self-created pre-modern world full of period objects of all kinds. This authentic process lets me explore the mindset of the early photographer/scientist/collector. I’m drawn to the quality of photograph-as-object that Wet-Plate yields, and excited by the hands-on aspect of the process. I see the limits of this technology (large, heavy equipment and long exposure times) as a challenge rather than a hindrance. ?? The images in "Mortals, Saints and Myths" explore this photographer's collecting obsessions. From casts of ancient sculpture through natural history materials to vintage clothing worn by friends who stop by the studio, these photographs provide a glimpse into my world.

There seems to be a common misconception that women who wear corsets must "hate themselves" or "hate their bodies." This is patently untrue and leads to endless concern trolling from those who think they know from vague hearsay more than those who have actually researched, invested in, and chosen to wear these unusual garments. Never mind that if someone really does hate their body, shaming them about it is probably […]

I spend a lot of time looking at pictures on the internet. Call it research, inspiration, or just procrastination, but several things become apparent when you look at steampunk and corset pictures all the time. One of them is that a lot of people out there can't tell the difference between a good corset and a bad corset, at least from a picture. So often I see someone talk about how great a corset is, only to look at it and go, "Huh? That's CRAP!" Now, ok, you can call me a corset snob if you want to. I mean, yes, I look at lots of really gorgeous corsets that I could never actually afford to own. And my own corsets that I make are by no means perfect, or even close to the highest quality corsets out there. But I've bought some really crappy corsets over the internet in my time, and I don't want others to make the same mistake. So there are things to look for when looking at a photo of a corset. The biggest, number one indicator of real corset quality is wrinkles. The very best corsets have none. This is because the corsetiers who make these corsets have magical powers, I'm pretty sure. Check out this AMAZING corset by V Couture: Smooth as anything. Also, probably the most beautiful corset I've ever seen. Now, as I mentioned, you're probably only going to find this level of flawlessness in a couture corset handmade by a professional. But there are plenty of other levels of quality between this and complete crap mass-produced in China. High quality corsets look hard. And I don't mean difficult to construct. I mean that the surface of the corset looks solid. This is usually due to a combination of high quality fabric(coutil) and lots of boning. This underbust is a great example of what I mean: Compare the solidity and smoothness of this, with a mass-produced (but still somewhat decent quality) corset: High quality corsets have a lot of boning. The job of boning in a corset is to hold the fabric taut, preventing it from getting crushed or crumpled or wrinkled. Steel boning is what you're looking for, but you're also looking for the quantity and placement of the boning. All corsets should be boned at every seam. Some are double-boned, meaning there is a bone on both sides of each seam. Often there are bones in between the seams, too, unless the panels are very small. What I see a lot of in low-quality corsets are large panels with no boning within them. It gets to the point where I'm thinking of this garment as a lightly boned top rather than a corset. Here's an example of what I mean: Now, don't get me wrong. I like the style of this corset. It's unique. I pinned it for a reason. But looking closely at it, there are probable four panels for each side of the corset, eight in all. That's a really low number for corset panels. It means it's difficult to get much actual shaping with only four panels. This isn't going to cinch your waist. Plus, the only boning is on the seams. There are only a few seams, so very few bones. You can see how loosely draped the fabric is, free to wrinkle all it wants. I would not consider this a "real" or "serious" corset. Finally, a quality corset is going to cost a few bucks. Now that can range from $60-600, depending on the corset and who made it. But if you find a deal too good to be true, like a $10 corset on ebay, it IS too good to be true. For more about the differences between a designer corset and a cheap Chinese knockoff, this is a GREAT article and video from Fairy Gothmother. So I hope some of this information is helpful when you're trying to judge the quality of a corset. If you want some more corset eye-candy, take a gander at my Corsetry board on Pinterest.
