This historical and fictional series focuses on the early period of King Henry VIII's reign which tests him both personally and politically. King Henry VIII (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) is the young and ambitious monarch of England and is contemplating declaring war on France after the assassination of his uncle. On the advice of his Lord Chancellor, Cardinal Thomas Wolsey (Sam Neill), the King decides against this course of action. Instead, Wolsey proposes that Henry should endorse a "Treaty of Universal Peace" which is meant to bring peace and harmony to Europe.
From storybook homes to grand manors, the Tudor style will capture your imagination.

Henry VIII… When we think of Henry VIII, we often picture the rather large king who was a complete tyrant, who had six 6 wives, and who beheaded two of them. King Henry was a bright and bold figure, and I think that one of his defining traits that we don’t often talk about was that he was an extremely ironic man who lived a life of great contradiction. See, when Henry VIII made a move, he did not hold back. When he wanted to divorce his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, and the pope told him no, he decided to separate from the Catholic Church altogether; even though he had written a pamphlet condemning the reformation and in support of the Catholic Church a few years before. When he decided that arguably the most intense love of his life, Anne Boleyn, could not give him a son, he did everything in his power to prove that she was unfaithful to him. What often gets overlooked however is that Henry VIII often acted so irrationally because his chief concern was his desire to have a son to secure his line. Henry was only the second king in the fledgling and somewhat illegitimate Tudor Dynasty, and because he only had a daughter, Mary, an already somewhat new ruling family became even more insecure without a legitimate son and heir.
