Old Gray Goose quilt block January 27, 1933-Nancy Cabot published the Old Gray Goose quilt block named for the song "Go Tell Aunt Rosie the Old Gray Goose is Dead." She claims it dates back to the 17th century and was originally pieced with many colors. She wrote, "Today, since we do not depend upon the scrap bag as our source of materials, the blocks will assume added distinction if done in two colors." I love it in two colors! The block has also been called Devil's Claws and Double Z which is a more common name today. This a very easy block to sew. It can be made from 16 half square triangles, a combination of half square triangles and flying geese units (what I did) or 8 flying geese which is how I would make it if I do it again. You just need 4 geese of one fabric and four geese of another fabric. Two dark centers go across the top and two more go on the bottom row with both rows facing the outer edge of the block. All 4 light geese go in the center, turned the long way, facing each other. For a 6" block, the geese need to finish at 1 1/2" X 3". Use whatever method you like to make your flying geese units. Quilt in a Day has a special ruler to make them that I personally like. This block can be found as #3221 in the Electric Quilt and BlockBase software.
And it's the last of the grey geese, greylag goose, classic goose. I tried to do this one a bit more loosely and quickly without obsessing so much over detail which I am wont to do. Also I was a bit short of time. Greylag goose, ©D H Wright, via Flickr Creative Commons. Greylag goose sketch. I've made the wings a bit too short and round. White domestic geese are descended from greylags so you often see interbreeding between the two, leading to all kinds of weird and wonderful results: 50 shades of greylag. Yep I went there. Looks like a Pennsylvania quilt--- color on color with no neutral, pink, green and blue. The pattern is a three-patch one of the smaller categories in my Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns. This may be the same quilt---different exposure or after washing and fading. The block could be constructed as a Nine Patch but no, there was a fashion for this three-patch. Fewer seams, but Y seams. Y? #3220 in the Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns Which tells us the oldest published version is about 1900 in the Clara Stone booklet called Old Maid's Puzzle #2. Ruth Finley in her 1929 gave it several names, Gray Goose, Brown Goose (depending on the color) Devil's Claws and Double Z. A few years later the Nancy Cabot column in the Chicago Tribune called it Old Gray Goose This example---a Brown Goose, I assume--- is from Julie Silber's inventory. Date: Perhaps 1880-1900 The Quilt Index shows a few that seem to pre-date the Clara Stone pattern. Some of the fabrics in the blocks look pre Civil-War in this one the New Jersey project recorded as originating in a boarding house in Atlantic Highlands run by Mary Crane Noble. Unknown origins from the Massachusetts project and the Quilt Index. UPDATE: Laura Lane sent this one from the collection of the New England Quilt Museum. The center features a U.S. Grant Presidential campaign bandana (ca. 1868.)
\"On pleasant afternoons your Aunt Amy dearly loves to wander down by the side of the pond, which lies just beyond the apple orchard, and there meet her bird or animal friends, of whom she has many, and all of them are ready to tell her stories. There it is she sees Mr. Frisky Squirrel, old Mr. Plodding Turtle, Mr. Bunny Rabbit, and many others; but never until yesterday did she make the acquaintance of the gray goose, and then it was owing to Master Teddy's mischief that she found a new friend among the dwellers on the farm. \"

This photo is likely every birder's dream - to identify three different geese flying in tight formation as literally several hundred birds pass overhead en masse ! In this rare photo, not only are there the 2 commonly seen phases of the Snow Goose - the prevalent white bird with black primaries, as well as the less numerous Blue Goose which has a white head and upper neck but is a charcoal color on its breast and back, with a gray leading segment of its wings (this is felt to be a phase variant of the white Snow Goose. rather than a separate specie) - and accompanying this trio is a Ross' Goose. The latter (second down in this photo) is smaller than the Snow Geese and has a shorter bill that lacks the "grinning patch" on its upper mandible, and has a more rounded forehead contour than does the Snow Goose. The Ross' Goose also has a more rapid wing beat than do the 2 phases of the Snow Goose. This photo is bound to draw the attention of dedicated birders !
The Greylag is the largest and bulkiest of the grey Anser geese. Very common in Iceland.

Ross's Geese with Greater White-fronted Goose. Note the blue-gray base to the bill of the Ross's, which separates it from the similar Snow Goose (which has a dark line down the bill, called a grin patch).

When my dad passed away last year, I took my moms goose while we were cleaning out his house. My mom had passed away 6 years prior, and she really loved this goose. She had a whole box of different outfits that she loved dressing her up in! So, I took the goose, named her Gertrude, and put her on my front porch. I also took the box of outfits and I’ve been dressing her up for the different seasons and holidays. Well, I finally got around to giving her a much needed makeover! I started off by wiping her down. Then using a cement filler/patch, I filled in all of the little holes, chips and big crack on her neck … Once that dried, I sanded her down and began painting her … She looks SOOOO much better!! I even made her a new outfit!! I used my Cricut and my new Cricut Easy Press 2 to design, cut out and iron on the logo and name on the back (Yup, we're Southsiders!!) … I love her so much!! She turned out so cute! Thank you so much for stopping by! As always if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me!

It is difficult to tease the facts from the romance in the origin of the Pilgrim goose. Popularly thought to have come to America with the pilgrims, the Pilgrim goose, as we know it, is a recently developed breed.
