Old photograph of three generations of fishwives in Newhaven in Edinburgh, Scotland. This Scottish village played a part in the birth of photography. David Octavius Hill and Robert Adamson did many studies of the fishwives of Newhaven. Often the wives and daughters of fishermen, fishwives were notoriously loud and foul mouthed, as noted in the expression, To swear like a fishwife. One reason for their outspokenness is that their wares were highly perishable and so lost value if not sold quickly. Fishwives in fishing villages such as Cullercoats and Newhaven were noted for their beauty, hardiness and industry and were celebrated by artists and royalty. Old photograph of a family in Dalry in North Ayrshire, Scotland. On the 8th Nov 1576, midwife Bessie Dunlop, resident of Lynne, in Dalry, was accused of sorcery and witchcraft. She answered her accusers that she received information on prophecies or to the whereabouts of lost goods from a Thomas Reid, a former barony officer in Dalry who died at the Battle of Pinkie some 30 years before. She said she first met him while walking between her own house and the yard of Monkcastle, and after a discussion he then disappeared through a hole in a wall or dyke, apparently too small for a normal person to pass through. She said she was trained by her " familiar " on how to make and use ointments to heal livestock and people. She was said to have cured and advised various people from poor children to gentry. As a " wise woman " her strange efforts at the time attracted the attention of the law. Her abilities were more akin to today’s current psychics, and with an understanding of medicinal herbs, she was identified in a time of witchcraft hysteria. It resulted in a conviction and the tragic outcome was that she was burnt at the stake. at Castle Hill in Edinburgh in 1576. Tour Scotland video of old photographs of Cromarty, Scotland. Cromarty is a seaport on the southern shore of the mouth of Cromarty Firth, 5 miles seaward from Invergordon on the opposite coast. Until 1890 it was the county town of the former county of Cromartyshire. The town grew around its port, formerly used by ferries, to export locally grown hemp fibre, and by trawlers trawling for herrings. The port was a British naval base during the First World War Hugh Miller was born in Cromarty on 10 October 1802, he was a self taught Scottish geologist and writer, folklorist and an evangelical Christian. Miller committed suicide, shooting himself in the chest with a revolver in his house on Tower Street, Portobello, Edinburgh, on the night of 23/24 December 1856. There is a legend, dating from around 1740, that a Cromarty man named John Reid was granted three wishes from a mermaid, and that he used one of the wishes to marry a woman named Helen Stuart. Old photograph of Crofters on Isle of Eriskay, Outer Hebrides, Scotland. Although only a small island, Eriskay has many claims to fame that have made the island well known far beyond the Hebrides. It is associated with the traditional Hebridean song, the Eriskay Love Lilt; with the Eriskay pony and the Eriskay jersey, made without any seams. It is the real Whisky Galore! island: it was just off Eriskay that the SS Politician ran aground in 1941 with its famous cargo. On 2 August 1745 the privateer Du Teillay landed Bonnie Prince Charlie with his seven men of Moidart on Eriskay to start the 1745 Jacobite Rising.
