Description An inside look at The Elephant 6 Recording Co., the '90s rock collective that launched Neutral Milk Hotel, The Olivia Tremor Control, The Apples in Stereo, and other bands. Around 1985, a group of Louisiana high schoolers began experimenting with whatever random instruments and gear they could find. Influenced by psychedelia, and with little to distract them, they birthed a musical revolution.
The Olivia Tremor Control - from the 90's, but they did psych as well as anyone IMO. Both in print on vinyl Music from the Unrealized Film Script:...
Limited edition double vinyl LP repressing of the Indie Rock band's 1999 album housed in a Stoughton tip on gatefold jacket with download code of nearly three hours of hard-to-find previously unreleased material. Black Foliage: Animation Music contains insanely catchy '60's- inspired pop music in addition to sound collages, field recordings, ambience, cathartic noise and outlandish production that makes Phil Spector's 'Wall of Sound' look like a cubicle divider.
Vinyl edition of In The Aeroplane Over The Sea, the 1996 release from Neutral Milk Hotel. 180 gram vinyl in gatefold packaging. Includes coupon for full album download. Jeff Mangum's second album as Neutral Milk Hotel is a masterpiece, Inspired by a reading of the Ann Frank story, and with the help from the Elephant Six recording collective (Apples in Stereo and Olivia Tremor Control), In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is a personal meditation on the rich joys of life and the tragedy of death. Triumphantly martial brass arrangements, warbly musical saw, and sweet piano augment the rough buzz of Mangum's basic acoustic guitar strum, but it's his glorious, wailing voice that soars over all of it as the album progresses seamlessly from bombastic rock songs ("Holland, 1945," "Ghost") and achingly earnest mid-tempo numbers ("King of Carrot Flowers Part 1") to a brass-led dirge ("The Fool") reminiscent of the jazz funeral that march through the streets of Mangum's native Louisiana. To hear this album once is to love it forever. - iTunes VINYL Details Release Date: February 10, 1996 Record Label: Merge Records UPC: 673855013619 Number of Discs: 1 Listen Before You Buy
These two impossibly strange, expansive psych-pop records from 1996 and 1999 are worlds unto themselves.
Lost in the Pancakes was recorded at home over the last few years by Peter Erchick of the Olivia Tremor Control, Circulatory System, the Instruments, the Wedding Band, among others. It is the follow up to his albums Individualized Shirts and Special Fanfare for Anything. Largely a solo effort (Erchick plays most of the instruments including piano, other keyboards, guitar, bass, percussion etc.), there are also contributions from Elephant 6 cohorts John Fernandes, Eric Harris, Bill Doss, Heather McIntosh, Derek Almstead, Robbie Cucchiaro, Heather Heyn, and Emily Growden.

With the release of Circulatory System's self-titled release in 2001, Will Cullen Hart (Olivia Tremor Control, Elephant 6) brought a new level of emotion and beauty to his work. The beautiful, lush orchestration, inventive instrumentation, and fanatical attention to sonic nuance are still in full form, but now serve as extensions of Hart's inner quest to discover the nature of time, existence, and the universe This is the first time the Circulatory System's debut release has been available on vinyl. The album's 22 tracks will be pressed on two 140gm LPs (by our friends at Kindercore Vinyl) and wrapped in a full-color, tip-on, gatefold LP jacket (by Stoughton Printing Co.).
