Tips for growing Vandas. The most common vandaceous orchids are Vandas (including recently renamed Ascocentrum), and Ascocendas. Here in South Florida we also grow many other species and intergeneric hybrids such as Rhynchostylis, Aerides, Aeridovanda (Aerides × Vanda), and numerous other combinations of these closely-related plants.

My name is Guy, a landscape photographer based in Chicago, and I am always in awe of the beauty and wonder of the Chicago Botanic Garden Orchid Show. Every year, I look forward to visiting the exhibit during the cold winter months in the upper midwest. It's like a breath of fresh air that brings life to the dull and dreary winter. The show is a ticketed event, but navigating through the crowds and finding the perfect shot can be a challenge. I am always up for the challenge, though, and my patience pays off when I find the unobstructed view I am looking for. This photograph of the "Phalaenopsis" or Pink Moth Orchid is a result of my persistence and patience. I wanted to highlight the stunning colors and details of the flower, so I decided to darken the background to create a dramatic effect. The sights and sounds of the well-attended showcase are unforgettable - from the buzz of visitors to the sweet fragrance of the blooms. My wife and I started visiting the Chicago Botanic Garden soon after she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Today, our trips require more planning and attention to detail on my part because my wife is unable to be left alone. But taking photos is my therapy, and it allows us to enjoy each other's company while exploring new places and exhibits. She means everything to me, and there is no place I'd rather be than by her side. My "one step at a time" journey as an Alzheimer's caregiver has given me a greater purpose in life. I want to bring better understanding and awareness to a growing population of individuals who are currently or may in the future be affected by this disease. That's why I have committed to donate a portion of my earnings through photography to the Alzheimer's Association. My goal is to make a difference in the world, one photo at a time. You Can Grow Your Own Orchids, Yes You Can! You're probably already thinking to yourself If I have to read a book to grow a flower in a pot, why should I bother?! Yeah, I know -but to be honest, there are a lot of excellent things that come with being able to master at least growing one successful pot of orchids. For one thing, they're gorgeous! Who wouldn't want to say, "Yeah, I grew those..."? Damn right you would! Being a badass indoor gardener is one thing, but tackling tropical plants like orchids is a feat unto itself. It's an artform. Think about it for a second. Most of us do not live in the climate conducive to these beauties just thriving on their own in the wild. Anyone who already actively grows and nurtures any species of orchid knows that you've got to climate control that environment like you wouldn't believe. It's not just about that, but you also must watch other factors too. It's an extremely rewarding yet very challenging experience. In addition, there are so many different species of orchid out there that you can safely assume that each plant you grow is going to be unique to itself. You can get some that you know will definitely be the same color, size or general shape, but we all know that there are so many things unique to each plant. How many flower spikes you end up with after the first blooms dissipate, how many leaves you have, how tall it grows and so many other things are all going to be different. The cool thing is that with the right know-how, you can nurture one potted orchid for years before you have to kiss it goodbye. In fact, you might keep them growing for almost a decade without even realizing it if you can take care them properly. It will also bolster your confidence when it comes to indoor gardening. You might have never planted anything outside, but you can throw these puppies in a pot and watch them go for forever if you follow a few key pointers and stay on top of their care. You just need to lovingly embrace the hobby and be patient with the process. Heck, you could have a whole atrium or sunroom full of tropical flowers by the time you're finished fooling around with different kinds -and there are a lot of them! Just imagine the possibilities... In this book, you're going to learn all about how to start off on the right foot with one of the cantankerous ones: orchids. So get out your gloves, grab a bag of potting mix, start jotting down supplies on a notepad, and get growing! | Author: Lisa Bond | Publisher: Independently published | Publication Date: Oct 24, 2017 | Number of Pages: 60 pages | Language: English | Binding: Paperback | ISBN-10: 1973144077 | ISBN-13: 9781973144076

I can't believe that I neglected to share this with you! You might remember my trip to Atlanta for the Proven Winners Outdoor Living Extravaganza (long name) this March, and my posts about the Fuqua conservatory. Maybe I just forgot to post about the exhibit because I was too distracted by the montane greenhouse and the Proven Winners event. There was a lot going on in such a short period of time! Anyways, here is the Orchid Daze: Liquid Landscapes exhibit in all its glory. Water was a dominating element in this display, or rather, it was a constant presence. The waterfalls that splashed over the screen of orchids was always easily seen and heard, but never disrupted the view of the orchids. The angular pool of water beneath huge metal pedestals of cymbidiums only served to lighten the visual load, and reflect the sky through the greenhouse's framework above. It was a very soothing experience. Each year's display is different, so don't expect the next one to resemble the images above. However, you can always expect to be mesmerized. Here's a link to the Atlanta Botanical Garden, should you plan a trip yourself. Oh, and be sure to mark your calender to meet Gayla Trail of You Grow Girl (one of my heroes) on September 21st for a lecture on how to Grow Great Grub!
