What do you do when you have too much stuff? Well...most of us usually cleverly hide away things in a drawer or closet until it reaches the point of bursting We have cute names for these areas like: the junk drawer the drunk drawer the knick knack...brick a brack... stuff and jumble closet and the ever popular clutter bug room... known as the the place where everyone seems to drop their stuff leave it there and then run off to another location in the house (usually the kitchen) at the speed of sound I for one cannot live with out a junk drawer or even two but I'm an organizer at heart Most of my favorite houses have been quite small so organizing the stuff of life has taken on epic proportions at times, sort of like fitting the Titanic into a dinghy I love a challenge ...especially when it involves baskets, boxes, files and labels So I agreed to share a little project I'm helping with and link to the amazing creativity of some other talented organizers too thanks to Leslie and her team at Segretto My project is helping a young twenty something couple create an office organization space using a basic Ikea wardrobe We start with this the Ikea Pax wardrobe system which retails for around $275 They already owned this and when they moved into a lager apartment with more closet space this became the perfect item to use for a new office/creative organization area It will contain: files.... his...hers...and joint files a printer all of their office supplies...pens, paper, tape etc a spot for daily mail a spot for keys, wallets and cell phones software and miscellaneous data equipment crafting supplies gift wrap and stationary table linens, candles and a few vases for flowers... and since they live in a big city with great shopping food and fun... lots of shopping bags the goal is to have all of the usually untidy and crazy odds and ends organized in a single location that works for a busy couple above is the old wardrobe with a few new modifications.... 2 new drawers a pull out shelf for the printer and multiple additional shelves for storage this Ikea wardrobe can be completely customized the wardrobe is fitted with two mirrored exterior doors which also will add a nice visual too their dining area when the doors are closed as you can see we are just getting started...but just wait all of the filing system is clear with bight colored folders in colors of kiwi, orange and blue the interior of the doors are fitted with magnetic memo boards for snapshots, business cards and a quick note to each other and we purchased these dog magnets because they have a new puppy named Bruno..and he's very cute we are almost done but we have a few more items to take care of please stop by for my next post too see the finished project completed its awesome..well not quite as awesome as Bruno, but we will try! Part 2 continued #6 The "Home Office" becomes "The Office" Working from home... At least part of the time... Home is where we all want to be! If not here...then where? I really wish I had been able to do this early on, when I first started working... Traffic is ugly...check Gas is expensive...check Anxiety is high...check HELP ME !!!! Do I need a power suit? Well... yes I do... But I'm only going to wear it a few times a week..if I'm lucky and the rest of the time I will work from home...with my running shoes still on and save my sanity! I want an office within my home that really functions like an office, but is an equally nice space to be in at any time. Not just a spare bedroom or a carved out little spot in the laundry room. Well OK.... I actually like the laundry room idea... But a great home office is almost as important as a great kitchen! Don't you think? Now for the Fluff... #7 Collecting becomes personal Let's hope we quit relying on Pottery Barn and Restoration Hardware and the very few (decent) Magazines left out there to be the compass for what is "collectable" And I really do love magazines and catalogs...don't get me wrong but... please...not these or these Hit the swap meet... and find the next great collection.... it is the so much fun! WE ALL KNOW THIS.... which is why.... I still collect these & these or this Or maybe none of this junk... but I really think about collections and try to get out and explore... and I hate it when I see a "SOLD" tag on a really cool collectable and think "who was that person who beat me to it?" crazy I know! #8 White and Neutral Don't give up on color... as you know I am a color geek but... I think white and neutrals are wonderful... especially in smaller spaces...but with a splash of color ...or the richness if a dark floor of or a bold piece of furniture hey there..you look familiar Cool and calm...I like that And sometimes it is hard, if not impossible, to compete with a beautiful view... or a terrace full of flowers... so don't even try #9 Kitchen/Bathroom Furniture Say goodbye to the cabinet... or the built in anything don't you love that blue on the back of the cabinet? Think free standing...open...furniture-ish OK? so any thoughts? Part III coming up next

Above our garage and at the very rear of our house in Corona Del Mar we have this great family room space. It actually was an apartment at one point, so it has a separate entrance with a door bell. The ceilings are really high so I added this huge double fan from a company called Fanimation. They make wonderful fans with natural palm blades in a variety of finishes. This model is about 5 feet wide and drops from the ceiling another 5 feet so you need some space if you choose this one. The ceilings are also sloped with interesting angles. The poor guy who installed this fan was really challenged. I think it took about 4 hours to put up. I put a small desk here from West Elm, with big chunky lamps and Orkney chairs I had the lampshades made with vintage french grain sacks. The window coverings are really simple white twill and I added a bamboo valance to play off of the natural palm fan blades and the woven grass backs of the chairs. The green armoire to the right is a reconfigured antique that houses a refrigerator and a microwave....In case we need some popcorn and a soda! The two white couches were designed specifically for this space because of the odd shape of the room. I used white denim and vintage feed sacks for the upholstery. I just recently found the rug on Ebay. It was from Williams Sonoma Home about a year ago and retailed for over $1000 dollars but I got it for $300!!! And its NEW! More fun signs! The green wicker table is vintage and I cut the legs down just a bit, so it works as a coffee table. The column came home with me from the Rose Bowl flea market one weekend and now is the perch for our pet seagull Harry We really enjoy this family room and it makes a great spot for kids and friends. Have a great week and thanks for stopping by! ~*~ kelley
