These are dark days indeed. All traces of life slowly fade from the landscape as the hours shorten and shadows lengthen. The autumnal dance now done, the trees lie brittle and bare to the sky. The last perennials splay and shiver like a ghost army defeated by the rain and wind. But with this kind of darkness, there is nothing to fear.

A relatively low-growing combination of plants that makes the most of a poor soil! Most of these plants are drought tolerant, deer resistant, low maintenance, excellent as cut flowers and real magnets for butterflies and bees.

Lottie Delamain considers the characteristic of Dutch plantsman Piet Oudolf's famous style of naturalistic planting, and advises on how to get the look at home
Piet Oudolf’s Millennium Garden at Pensthorpe has recently been replanted and it looks truly spectacular. In fact, this might be the best place in England to appreciate Oudolf’s influential style - it’s certainly as good as his borders at RHS Wisley and far better than Scampston Hall in Yorkshire where I think his naturalistic style of planting doesn’t seem to work properly within a Victorian walled garden. These drifts of plants and colour need an open space and, preferably, a sloping site. Pensthorpe itself is a strange, hybrid sort of place, run as a successful business venture by the owners of Jordan breakfast cereals. Claiming to be a nature reserve, it has hosted BBC's Springwatch and Autumnwatch yet it has many birds in cages - even avocets - and most of the resident waterfowl have been imported from South America and Africa, so it’s more an avian zoo with a garden attached.
