UK scientists have shown that birds use experience to refine the construction of their nests and make fewer mistakes as the months go past.
I've been feeling inspired by all things eggs and nests lately. It could be that watching my Pekin bantam hen, Custard, hatch out all five of her eggs has played a part. Also, I seem to be finding nests. There's three sitting on top of my piano at the moment! I've found two micky's nests. These little grey birds are prolific here in Brisbane and live in vast happy noisy families, with lots of birds (not only the parents) tending the nest. After the chicks have fledged they often tear apart the nest and use the materials to build another somewhere else. I love the way they line the nest using something soft. I think this is building insulation. This one has used the swirly tendrils from a passionfruit vine - how delightful! This lovely green lichen and spiderweb nest came from up in the mountains when we went to visit friends in the new year. C and I went for an early morning walk and it had fallen to the ground... empty, thank goodness. So, I've begun nesting too. I've been having such fun with my cast plaster quail eggs, and making a nest to put some in is the natural thing to do, right? I've so loved making this nest. The main part is made from old copper wire that was hanging down from some disused telephone poles - I remember my brother coming home with the vast heavy roll of it when we were kids. I love how it's starting to oxidise, and I think it'll go completely green in the long term unless it's brushed off. The shiny bright wire is from a spool I bought at a flea market. I don't know what type of metal it is but it's never tarnished, and I've had it for years. The eggs - well, they're made from my favourite Gedeo Resin Plaster. Hello bird's nest!

Looking for a book that combines mystery and humor in an ancient historical setting? Medicus by Ruth Downie is a great choice! SYNOPSIS: Medicus takes place in Roman-occupied Brittannia. It follows Ruso, a military doctor at the hospital in the occupied town of Deva. He has recently been transferred to Deva from a post in Africa. He is recently divorced and is struggling, along with his brother, to keep the family farm and reputation afloat, as their father left them deeply in debt. The farm is located in Gaul, and while the brother and his family work to make the farm profitable and keep their creditors at bay, Ruso sends home as much of his salary as he can. On top of these stressors, he finds Britannia to be a backward, savage, dirty place. His lodgings are filthy and the food is terrible. The bureaucracy of the hospital, not to mention the military post, is in disarray; and Ruso has to perform the work of several men. His supervisor is a nosy, micromanaging creep with bad hair. He is kind of having a tough time, to say the least. Soon after the story begins, Ruso witnesses the terrible treatment of a slave girl, and before he knows what he has done, he has spent his badly needed money to buy and thus rescue her. In the meantime, a body has been found and identified as one of the dancing girls from the local bar. Later, another body is found, another girl from the same bar. Ruso, stepping outside of his responsibilities, finds himself swept up in investigating the murders and landing himself in plenty of frustration and danger in the process. Once he has healed her, he finds his new slave, Tilla, to be an invaluable help to him, not only in domestic life, but also in solving the murders. GOOD STUFF!! This was an enjoyable read. I LOVED the sense of humor in this book. Even the pages introducing the cast of characters was funny and creative- I love how it was done. Ruso seemed to be a decent guy with a dry sense of humor, the girls at the local bar were fun characters, Tilla, the rescued slave girl, is intriguing and funny, Ruso's roomate is funny.... just great characters all around. The antagonists are despicable and (some of them) get what they deserve at the end. I loved the setting- obviously it's impossible to tell how accurate it was historically, but it was a great imagining of it. I don't know tons about Ancient Rome or Britain, and learned some things about the cultures. I appreciate that, despite the story largely surrounding a brothel, there weren't copious amounts of sexual content, and none of it was too graphic. I also liked how the book wrapped up. I believe it is the first in a series, but it stands alone quite well. NOT-SO-GOOD STUFF: The story kind of dragged. I wasn't really swept up in the mystery; there wasn't much suspense or urgency to it until the end of the book. TO SUM UP: This was a fun book! I don't know that I was impressed enough to read the next book in the series, at least not immediately. But it was worth the read. I gave it 3 out of 5 stars on Goodreads. Spring is just around the corner, and birds will be busy building their nests. Give them a helping hand by providing things that they can use while nesting. And…
My last post was in July...I think it's safe to say that I've been on a blog burn-out. I wonder if we're all evolving from blogs - to Pinterest! In the rare chance that someone is out there - I've missed you!! As for our little family, we've been staying insanely busy. I can't complain--I don't have 20 kids like the Duggers, but for me and my little brain, I've got way more than I can handle. Busy summer, busy husband at a new job, busy kids playing, busy baby girl being mischevious, busy new calling in new ward (Primary Prez), busy kids starting a new school, and every now and then I stop and take a break...to pee...or get a drink...or sleep at night....stuff like that. For whatever reason, I have had this burning desire to make jam this summer. I want to have that skill in my back pocket so I can whip out some amazing jam whenever I want. My attempt was semi-successful - jam is not very thick, but tastes great. And it's beautiful!!! I won't let the kids eat it--we just look at it. Another fun summer activity for me, I mean the kids, was this 1,000 piece puzzle of wonders. I mean---LOOK at it. There's stuff going on all over this puzzle, but we did it. I'm not a huge puzzle fan - I probably participate in puzzleness maybe once every 5 years - but this one looked fun, so there you have it. No reason - just random entertainment. Can you see how challenging this was?! There should be some type of award for attempting something of this magnitude. Speaking of magnitude...summer vacation to Ouray, Colorado. Need I say more?! Here we are decending into Telluride. Wonder of all wonders, we stopped to use a porta-potty (I know...disgusting...) and these flowers were sitting there so pretty and this precious little bee comes along just for me! Happy little working bee. Naturally I had to snap a few hundred shots of my little bee. And now that we're here in my beloved desert home, we've been out exploring every chance we get. The beauty is lost on some people... ...they don't get it... ...but to me, there is no greater place than the desert... Everything is drenched in sunlight - every day. I just don't know how to handle all of this sunlight! She was in our path...very curious about us...and so sweet. I want one! Cows aren't that complicated, right? And now that it's Saturday and we have millions of other things to do, we're going to go play in the great outdoors in our happy little jeep! {wahoo!} Have a great weekend, all!!
