This quilt has been in the works for a while, and in my head I'd deemed it our 'end of summer/early fall' quilt. It's primarily made from a charm pack of American Jane Happy Campers, and I will allow myself the disclaimer that this isn't my first choice for binding. But it's leftover from a…

Item Details. Another extraordinary handmade silk and silk velvet crazy patchwork quilt from our studio collection and dating from 1886/87, America. Made in rich jewel-like coloured silks and velvets embroidered with details including initials, dates, scissors, flowers etc. worked in hand worked silk embroidery. Patchworks such as this lovely example are the originators of recycling at its best, using tiny scraps and found pieces this quilt includes dress silks and velvets, cuttings from ribbons and such like. Probably made as a wedding quilt, perhaps by a mother for her daughters trousseau, no doubt some of the fabrics used would have been recognisable as a part of dresses etc. The quilt has been backed at a later date - possibly the 1930s with a scarlet, silky lining. It also has some later patches added over the years probably covering some damaged original patches. This is folk art piece, it has a charming naïve quality and was worked by someone who is untrained. The quilt is too fragile to use and deserves to be displayed on a wall or become part of a collection. You would never get tired of looking at it there is so much detail and interest. Measurements: 172 x 172cm Condition. The quilt is in good antique condition but is time worn from use, it has numerous rubs and losses to the surface of some of the thinner silk dress fabrics ribbons. These could be replaced and or repaired. All of the textiles we sell are genuine antiques and may have some the idiosyncrasies and small flaws that you would expect in an antique textile. Further Notes. We are able to accept layaway on this item, please ask for details. We have lots more original and quality vintage items and textiles in our shop, https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/TheTextileTreasury Where possible, we use recycled packaging when shipping items.

The main thing I want to make in 2015 is quilts - lots of quilts. I've started the year right with our national Quilt Symposium that's been right here in Palmerston North. I am full up with inspiration and thought I'd share some of it here with you over a few posts. First up, I attended some great lectures. The artists I saw are all very talented in quite different ways and I took something away from hearing each one. I have provided links to their sites and photos of the quilt they had in the tutors' exhibition :: Sue Benner creates original dyed and painted fabrics which she combines with recycled textiles. She fuses and then cuts her fabrics to create detailed quilts. Her quilt on show was one of her cellular structures : click on any photo in this post to make it larger "Cellular Structure V" by Sue Benner She shared some of her landscape quilts in her talk - tiny detailed pieces and wonderful colour - see her gallery HERE. Betty Busby works with all kinds of fabrics and uses a layered approach to her work. It was really interesting to see her work inspired by the natural world through a microscope in contrast to Sue Benner's work above - go HERE to see her gallery of that work. Her tutor's exhibition quilt was one of her waterscapes - see similar work HERE. But what I'm sharing is a piece from one of the other exhibitions in town since I far prefer flowers to fish : "Buffalo Gourd" by Betty Busby Linda Beach creates all her quilts with piecing and commercial fabrics. It was fascinating to see her take on landscapes in contrast to Sue Benner above. "Evening Wall Shadows" by Linda Beach Go HERE for her gallery of quilts which includes many trees and lots of colour - the one above is much more muted than most of her pieces. Helen Godden is an Australian quilter. Her work is predominantly pictorial, with strong design and colour. Lots of free motion quilting is a feature of her work. "Rainbow Lorikeet" by Helen Godden Click HERE to see her gallery of art quilts. Here are a few of my favourites from the Tutor's exhibition which might inspire quilts from me this year : Sheena Norquay's lovely quilt pair inspires me to make a seascape quilt : "Summer and Winter island strips with oystercatchers" by Sheena Norquay Jo Dixey is a New Zealand quilter - I love the way she uses fabric. It was hard to get a good angle of this quilt because it is quite large, so see it and more of her work in her gallery HERE. "Watching" by Jo Dixey I think I might have to make 1 abstract quilt this year - I just love the colour and composition of this one by Deborah Louie from Australia. "Medallion #8" by Deborah Louie I am very lucky that at the end of January I'll be spending 2 days with Karen Stone - love her work and a good way to start the year with fabric and colour design ideas. This is her tutor's quilt, but not one of the classes I will be doing. "Reptile wisdom" by Karen K. Stone I particularly love the circles in the border There will be more posts about Symposium so I can share other exhibition quilts. I also shopped!...More soon.

This year, the Portland Modern Quilt Guild decided that it would be fun if we each made our own name tags. Last night I realized I better get going on mine if I wanted to wear it to our meeting tonight! So here's my super-teeny-tiny paper pieced sewing machine name tag! The entire thing measures 3" x 4" so it's pretty small. Sewing machine details are embroidered on and I stamped my name with Versacraft ink, which is then heat set to become permanent. Tape measure print is a lovely scrap from Ayumi (thank you!) and the binding is heath by Alexander Henry. All in all a very fun and satisfying project that took relatively little time. Can't wait to see everyone else's name tags at the meeting! UPDATE: Free paper-piecing pattern for the sewing machine HERE.

You're winding your way around the wares of a French market. A quilt catches your eye. The needlework is impeccable, the materials fine. And the style is trapunto - stuffed little pockets that create a raised vine motif. It's a must-have. And now you can. Our quilt and matching sham (Sold Separately) are modeled precisely after the one we found in St. Rmy. The pieces are reversible to a French ticking vertical stripe. The more you wash it, the closer it will get to the glorious vintage original. From the oversized ties on the sham to the scalloped edge on the quilt, this ensemble is nonpareil.
Don't know about your area but here in VaBch/Norfolk Friday was July Sew Day. It wasn't just another sew day this one had a little spice. Our local PBS Station, WHRO, was filming and interviewing for a piece they are doing on the work Elaine and I do for and about QOV. It is apparently a new segment on events and people around our area that support our active military and veterans. To be chosen as the first story is quite an honor. We will post and link what we can when it becomes available. They will be making another trip to the home/studio for some more footage and interviewing this coming week. Are we excited...ask your 7 year old on Christmas Morning before you hand him/her their first present. Duh!!! To say we are lucky when it comes to space would be very true. The Ocean View Senior Center Norfolk allows us access to the gym area. Our guild also holds our Day Chapter meeting s here. They have been very generous and gracious hosts. Above, the WHRO camera operator, Shannon, takes some shots as Laurie explains the photos of her family she has on her cup. Elaine and I had the honor of awarding QOV's to her parents. WWII Veterans who meet when her dad was wounded and the treating nurse was...you guessed it...her mom. Above, left to right Nancy B. Nancy Z. and Anne H. share stories and experiences with the WHRO Reporter, Michelle B. (standing) Michelle is a 26 year veteran from the U.S. Air Force. She was also one very surprised recipient of a Quilt of Valor that we presented. We will post some photos at first opportunity. Shannon videoed and took some stills of the Award Presentation. Nancy Z's name will come up again here in a few minutes. Above Susan P. and Nancy F. (I know a lot of Nancy's) were working on bindings. While Davis M. (below) was doing some cutting. He was working on some blocks for future QOV's. Davis has been quilting since February 2013 and has already ribboned. A former engineer he took to quilting and sewing like, as they say, a fish to water. I think I've seen at least a dozen of his finished projects...at least...oh did I say finished. One month he brings a couple of tops to Show and Tell and next month he brings the completed quilts. My guess is the life expectancy of a UFO is very short around Davis. We displayed a couple of finished quilts and there was an area where we had quilts to be bound, bordered, and labeled. Everyone had plenty to do. There was one quilt that wasn't there. It was in the Longarm Room attached to the machine waiting for someone to get home and apply some thread. You'll recall I mentioned Nancy Z. would be heard from again. Well here she is. Elaine and I were graciously invited to attend this years Region 8 Retreat. While there it was announced by Betsy that a company that makes the blue star fields for flags has a very strict and rigid quality control system. If there is a flaw, any flaw, the smallest of flaws detected as the field comes off the machine the field is removed from further production and prior to Betsy, discarded. The fields are never part of an American Flag. Well long story short Betsy took delivery of apparently a pallet full of blue fields of different sized stars that didn't get past quality control. So of the 90 individuals that attended the retreat we all got some blue fields. You may have seen some postings of what others have done with those blue fields. Well here is Nancy Z's. I got to quilt it and more than likely will get to award it down the road. This truly is one of those times when the picture doesn't do justice. This is one fabulous quilt. My goal as a longarmer, whether a QOV, a Project Linus, someone's baby quilt or one of Elaine's custom T Shirt quilts, regardless, is to compliment the quilter's work. I haven't seen Nancy yet so I'm kind of on pins and needles but I hope I was successful. Her work is always beautiful and meticulous. Picking the pattern and putting down the first few stitches was more nerve racking than flying into a combat zone under fire. At the time I was used to that, it was the routine. Complimenting the work of quilters is a tad bit more challenging. If I get it wrong a lot more dangerous. I'll leave you with this...by the time I get the quilt all of this has been figured out...thank goodness! I have to admit I'm a littler concerned in regards to the size of the lap as indicated above. I'm gonna have to talk with Elaine. Apparently I'm gonna need a "nap quilt." I'm certain I qualify. Quilt till you wilt...we do.
