You might remember the original Windows desktop wallpaper photo, depicting an idyllic green hill on a summer day. It was taken by Charles O'Rear in California. Though the picture, called Bliss, is absolutely gorgeous, it still can get boring after a while.

Is there anything more breathtaking and surreal than outer space? Often, I feel like there absolutely isn't. Maybe it's because of all the celestial masterpieces stars, galaxies, and planets paint, effortlessly sweeping us off our feet? Or maybe we feel this way about space because it's something we can't touch, tame, or change? Or perhaps, it's because of that nostalgic feeling you get when it's a warm summer night and you raise your head and look up at the sky and all the stars simultaneously remind you of how truly small you are (but in the best way possible)?

While astronomical art is my specialty, I can't do planets 24 hours a day. So sometimes I set that aside to do something to get my mind off Mars or Titan or Gliese 467b or whatever it is I have been sweating over. H.P. Lovecraft has always been one of my favorite authors, so a few months ago I started a series of…

The title seems to describe a completely different post. It's a shame how the words dark/black can have such bad or sinister connotations. Australian Artist Justin Estcourt specialises in these role reversal drawings. By reversing the background and foreground of the usual black and white ink drawings, you get this amazing contrast that really makes any illustration on the page pop. We talk about warm and cold colors; black to me, is a separate category all together. An example might make it clearer. At night in the dark looking out of the window staring into the distance, whilst focusing on nothing, a sense of calm seems to take over. A time to order your thoughts without many tiring and distracting stresses, jabbing their sharp fingers into you, trying to catch your attention for their own purposes. In the dark of the night, their effects slowly washed away by the serene clarity that silence brings; it restores and refreshes you, ready for it to start again at dawn... I think that the feeling and experiences tint the way we see other things in our lives. That is why when I see color black, I associate with what I mentioned above. Ps. Most of the drawings I found didn't have names, so I gave them some. For more of Estcourt's work here on DesignStack, press this LINK. Worlds apart connected by dark matter. We are used to see the epic, awe-inspiring, perfect photos from the golden age of NASA, during the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo missions. Those are not the photos that you will find in Drewatts Bloomsbury's auction. These are all pretty shitty—poorly exposed, badly framed, out of focus, or just plain boring.
Though the 1970s-era space probe has finally slipped into an interstellar realm, in some senses it is still very much within the bounds of the solar system.
If the universe is expaning evenly, how is it possible for galaxies to ever collide? Shouldn't they become more and more distant from each other as the universe expands?
