So, I just realized that I never posted my classroom pictures. Yes, school started in August and it is now almost February...better late than never? This is probably the first year that I am truly happy with the way my room turned out. Last year I was in Montana the week before school so I felt rushed to get things ready, and every year before that I've had to switch rooms, which is always chaos. Here is the finished product. Reading Area with a Dr. Seuss poster that I made. another view of the reading center. Reading Goal Bulletin Board with Chic-fil-A cow. As students get closer to their goal, they put a clothes-pin with their name on it on the ladder. Encouraging students to be "bucket-fillers"--give compliments. Not sure where this idea first came from, but a lot of teachers at my school do it with their classes. The buckets now have students' names on them. Stole this idea from pinterest. Grammar Island sentence. Our mascot is the marlins. After students read a book, they fill out a recommendation card for the board. Writing Center Agenda Board. It's a little different now. Calendar, "student center" (where they turn their papers in), and my desk. My favorite thing in the room. I've had this for a few years now. Pretty sure I first saw something similar to it in a book somewhere. I love it. cubbies with printables found on pinterest. Welcome to 3G! Ask me if my room is still this clean. When I left today, I couldn't even see the wood of my desk. Any of you educators have any teacher organizational tips??

Teaching behavior expectations in kindergarten is important, especially in the first few weeks of school. This often sets the stage for your class for the entire year. For students to fully understand what is expected of them, it is important that teachers address and teach these expectation. I usually spend a lot of time during the first weeks of school teaching student expectations and classroom behaviors. We complete sorts of good choices and bad choices in the classroom and discuss what makes them good and bad choices. We complete these sorts whole group and students also complete individual behavior reflection sheets. These work great during the first few weeks of school or when students may need a review. These include different levels of difficulty beginning with students simply deciding if an actions is a good or bad choice, to a student sort of good and bad choices (this is a freebie at the end of the blog post) to finally illustrating or writing good or bad choices. Also we color an emergent reader reviewing some of the classroom expectations. These can also just be used as little coloring pages when a classroom expectation is introduced. In your classroom, you may want to challenge your students to focus on a certain expectation for a week. Included are posters that would work great for this: These provide a visual and focus for students when expectations are being taught. You can make it a game and provide an incentive if students can meet this expectation a certain amount of times in a week. Once these expectations are taught it is important to keep students accountable to their actions. I have been using a visual think sheet in my classroom that is perfect for this. It is very appropriate for your early learners in pre-k or kindergarten or special ed because it includes pictures for students to show what they did. Students simply color in the choice they made and a better choice they can make. These are great reflections for students, communication for parents and documentation if necessary. You may also want to post these cool down methods where students can reflect on strategies to cool down, instead of getting upset. You can find this entire Behavior Think Sheets and Activities in my TPT store and the Free Good and Bad Choices Student Sort here:

Howdy! I am Mr. Greg from The Kindergarten Smorgasboard. My real name is Greg Smedley-Warren. I have been teaching for 11 years. I spent a year teaching fifth grade, two years in second grade and am now in my 9th year in Kindergarten. Kindergarten is my passion and my calling but honestly, that wasn’t how it started. When I was moved to Kindergarten (not voluntarily!) I called my mommy and cried. But on the first day, I fell in love and knew that Kindergarten is where I belonged. I have remained in Kindergarten ever since. I plan to never leave the classroom as the kids are what drive me to continue my growth as a teacher and person.

Hey everyone, Ms. T here! Going with the theme of classroom management, I thought I could talk about tips for having a sub and dealing with classroom management. I have to say when I saw this on Farley's blog, it made my heart happy. Oh' Boy 4th Grade Not only is it a message from the teacher, but a great reminder for kiddos to do their best (especially with a sub). I know it's easier for me as a sub if the teacher has some sort of behavior system in place, whether it's individual/group/class. Cupcake (she's my friend, I can call her that haha) has a cute compliment jar incentive. She has examples of it being whole group, table, or personal. Love it because the kids work together to earn a star! A Cupcake For The Teacher When I saw this, I had to pin it for later use and then go to the blog to read more. Littlest Learners I love it! Keeps the kids in check and you don't hear "Do I have to do that?" Or "Our teacher wouldn't make us do that!" Well if the teacher has it prepped for the sub, then perfect! And I love, love, love this idea! CFC I love that she has all the info in one place. Some teachers don't allow kids to use the sharpener. Some teachers allow kids to go to the bathroom at certain times. This has it all laid out. Perfect! Now believe me, it's hard when there is no management system. I've been in some classes like that and had to improvise. I made punchcards and they had to have a certain amount of punches by the end of the week if they wanted board game time. Whatever the system, please let your sub know what you use. And also what you do if a child misbehaves. We like to follow what you do so there is continuity and routine!
