If you love vintage board games, you'll love this vintage 1960 Parcheesi (PACHIZSI) game printed by Transogram Company, Inc. N. Y. "Gold Medal Toys and Games Since 1915". Includes: 1 Board, 16 conical playing pieces - 4 each of Red, Yellow, Blue, Green; 2 pairs dice. There are several standout features of this game: The non-standard spelling of Parcheesi as "PA-CHIZ-SI" in an exotic font. The full color graphic on the front shows a tiger lounging in front of several exotic-looking buildings with onion domes. The board is laid out with a non-traditional number of spaces. The playing pieces are plastic cones. Rules of the game are printed on a single, double-sided sheet of paper. Made in the USA in 1960. Description: Pachisi, the national game of India, dates back to 4 AD and remains popular today. Each player has a set of pawns that start in his or her corner of the board. The goal is to move the pawns around the board to the "home" section. Movement is controlled by dice. All players move around the same board, so they may capture each others pawns. Captured pawns are returned to their player's corner and must start their journey over. The winner is the first player to move all pawns "home". Gameboard: TRANSOGRAM COMPANY, Inc., NYC, 1955 (Pa-Chiz-Si The game of India, Board C; Board D, No. 8, 9, 7) Brand: Transogram Co. Inc. out of NYC. History of Pachisi: Among the many board games that India has given the world, pachisi is one of the most copied and better known. British readers will note its similarity to Ludo, and Americans may recognise the inspiration it gave to the creators of Parcheesi. But unlike these western games which have been simplified for children, pachisi is a game of partnership requiring a little more skill than its western descendants. Its antiquity is uncertain. Similar games are reputed to have existed in the 3rd century, and it is probable that this game existed in the 1st millennium. It was at its height during the Mogul period, in the 16th to the 19th centuries, when the emperor Akbar played games with human pieces on boards of inlaid marble, the remains of which may still be seen. less
Traditional Ancient India Chess Game Chaupar /pachisi Set Cloth Board Game, Cloth Board and Wooden Pawns Game,Indian Ludo Game Complete Set that includes 1 Cloth Board (Stitched Double Cloth) , 16 Pawns and 7 Cowrie ShellsThis Incredible and Beautiful item ....is ready to be part of your great collection. “Chaupar is a board game very similar to Pachisi of the Cross and Circle family played in India. It is believed that both games were created around the 4th century. The board is made of wool or cloth. The dice can be six cowry shells, although others distinguish chaupur from pachisi by the use of 3 tetrahedral (four sided) dice. The pawns are made of wood. It is usually played on a table or the floor. This Indian Folk Art & Primitives Game for use a collection and decorative and also use as gift. highly rare piece for collection.” Also known as chausar or chaupad, this game has many similarities to the more well-known pachisi. A cross-shaped board hosts the pieces of four players, who play in two partnerships, each player having four pieces. The pieces begin at fixed positions around the board, racing around the board to finish at the centre. History The history of chaupar is linked to that of pachisi, not least because the boards are identical and that it is therefore impossible to see which of the two games an archaeological example belonged to. The games seem to have existing for most of the past two millennia, though written evidence exists only from the fifteenth or sixteenth centuries. Rules The starting layout of a chaupar game. The rules below are taken from those recorded by David Parlett in his book The Oxford History of Board Games. Where Parlett has recorded uncertainty between possibilities, I have made an arbitrary choice so as to present a coherent set of playable rules. 1. The game is played by four players on a cross-shaped board, each player having four pieces. Black and yellow play in partnership against red and green. Three four-sided dice control the moves of the pieces, the numbers on the dice being 1, 2, 5 and 6. 2. At the start of the game, each player's piece start at the 6th, 7th, 9th and 10th positions of their course, as shown in the diagram. 3. Players each roll the dice, the highest throwing player moving first. Play continues clockwise around the board. 4. The pieces having begun their journey already, no specific throw is needed to move a piece from its starting place. 5. A player on his turn starts by throwing the dice. He then moves up to three pieces. The throws may all be used on one piece, which moves by the total number of squares, or split between two or among three pieces. 6. The pieces are moved along the course shown in the diagram. The cross-cut markings on some of the squares have no relevance to the game. The movement of the pieces (as seen for the south player) 7. All of the throw must be used if there are moves possible. It is not allowed to pass a turn in chaupar. 8. A piece landing on a square occupied by an opponent captures the opponent's piece and sends it back to the central square to begin its journey again. 9. A piece landing on another of its own colour may double up. On subsequent turns, the pair may move together as if they were a single piece. A third or fourth piece may be added to the group in the same way. 10. A group of two or more pieces may not be captured by an enemy singleton. It may only be captured by a group equal in number or larger than itself. 11. A piece returns the the central square by an exact throw only. 12. When all four pieces of a player have returned to the central square, he continues to throw during his turn; his throws are used by his opponent. 13. When both players of a partnership have arrived at the central square, then the game is over and they are victorious. • Traditional play • Classic design • Durable wood • Lightweight • Foldable board • Cultural icon • Gift-ready Immerse in the rich heritage of India with this beautifully crafted Chaupar/Pachisi game. Pachisi game board of wood, straw and cotton made in India in the 1970s
I used to play Pachesi all the time growing up, although not with this particular set. It's a great game for the family, especially at this time when many of us are stuck at home. This version is from 1945 making it 75 years old! You would never know it, as it's in wonderful condition. The game board is very good. There are a couple of dirt marks near the center medallion, but other than that, it's perfect. The box is also in very good condition. One corner each of the top and bottom box is split. I may tape these before shipping. There are 8 plastic playing pieces, 1 pair of wooden dice and 1 plastic dice cup. I believe that is all it came with. There are no instructions, but these can be found on line, or you can utilize Parchesi instructions. In order to protect the game box, it will be shipped inside another box. If I have over estimated the shipping by more than $1.50, I will refund the difference. Conversely, if I have under estimated by more than this amount, I will convo you prior to sending an invoice for the additional charge.
