If you buy more than one skein of the same colourway then I will endeavour to select them from the same batch. Due to the individual nature of hand-dyed yarn, I would always recommend alternating skeins or knitting from both ends of the same ball if you are concerned about colour pooling or mismatching. If you have any questions then please do not hesitate to contact me. To keep your items looking beautiful, I would advise hand washing in luke warm water and a mild detergent. Dry flat. Whilst every effort is taken to rinse all remaining dye from the yarn, there may be a slight colour bleed on the first wash.

Take a moment, really an hour!, to listen to this week’s Skirted Roundtable interview with interior design maven, Phoebe Howard. Mrs. Howard joins Linda, Megan and me to discuss design, business, and her new book – The Joy of Decorating. She has a most unusual story to tell about how she ended up in the business – it might surprise you to learn how long she’s been an designer. I was, for sure! One thing I’ve learned since we’ve been interviewing these power house designers is just how driven, Type A personalities, they all are. Mrs. Howard is no exception. Her schedule is back breaking – I have no idea how she finds time to brush her teeth in the morning, she is that busy. And, on top of that – her husband is also an interior designer, so she truly lives the life 24/7. Besides all her duties, somehow Mrs. Howard found time to write a beautiful design book. It isn’t just pretty pictures, the words are worth reading. Still, the images are some of the prettiest in the industry. No one does pretty as well as Mrs. Howard does. Page after page, each room is more beautiful than the next and this is no exaggeration. I especially love this room because I have one of those rare yellow and black transferware plates (that’s all I could find!) Although the cover of her book is navy and white, Phoebe tells us she prefers this type of color scheme the best – light creams, blues and greens all blended together. I love how she usually adds one printed fabric in a sea of solids. Her bedrooms are especially soothing. Mrs. Howard discusses how her decorating style is different than her husband’s. There’s a bit of a rivalry between them and it’s fun to hear her talk about their two aesthetics. The book is available here and on the Skirted Roundtable web site. NOTE: While the book is cheaper on Amazon, it does NOT include Mrs. Howard’s paint chart!! The paint chart is only available when you order the book from our web sites or from Mrs. Howard’s web site. The paint chart is really an invaluable tool. It includes all her favorite colors and which company they come from. It’s a handy addition for the decorator or the homeowner. For me – the paint chart has been worth the price of the book! I find myself referring to it over and over again. To listen to the Skirted Roundtable interview with Phoebe Howard, please go HERE. As always, we truly appreciate you taking time out of your busy day to listen.

This listing is for Contempo's Washed Wood for Benartex, 108 inch wide quilt backing fabric, sold in a 3 yard bundle. Wait until you see this texture! Just imagine the side of a wooden barn or bridge, beautifully painted. The sun and wind and rain have all had a turn at embracing the wood. It’s been several years and now the washed paint highlights every little nook and cranny and creates a rich surface. Then imagine reaching out and touching a velvety soft texture. That’s Washed Woods! These wood textures range in color from the palest neutrals to reds, greens, blues, and a cool selection of grays. (Gray always adds a modern touch to your project!) At 108” wide, this is definitely a basic that you will want to keep on hand at all times... but beware… it’s more than basic… it’s a beautiful basic! Information: This fabric is 100% cotton. It is sold by the 3 yard bundle. It is custom-cut from the bolt. 1 yard: Each cut is 36" x 108" = 3 yard bundle is 108" x 108". Shipping: Ships only to the Continental U.S. from Texas. HOW MUCH FABRIC DO I NEED? To figure out how much fabric to buy for your quilt backing, you must first measure your top. There are charts available that can help you find the correct amount of fabric according to the size of your quilt. These charts are an easy guide and work best for any “standard” sized quilts. Remember that if you are having a long arm quilter finish your quilt, you will need to add 8” to the length and width to accommodate the quilter. If your quilt is not within the “standard” range, then you will have to figure out the amount of yardage that you will need on your own. The general rule of thumb is to add 4” to each side (add 8” if you are sending to a long arm quilter). For example: Your quilt top is 99” wide and 106” long. You need a quilt back that is at least 103”x 110” (just add 4” to each side). If you quilt back is 108” wide, you will need at least 110” aka 3.05 or 3 1/8 yards (110 divided by 36). We suggest you also add 1/8 yard for shrinkage which means you need to purchase 3 ¼ yards. WHAT ABOUT USING A 45” FABRIC? If you want to use a 45” quilting fabric and piece the back, you must look at your measurements carefully. 45” fabric has selvedges on each side, which should be cut off when you piece your back. Most selvedges are bulkier and tightly woven than the rest of the yardage. Leaving the selvedge on can cause the fabric to ripple, makes the seams thicker, and can cause all kinds of trouble with the back of your quilt - SO CUT IT OFF! Removing the selvedge along with a ½” seam allowance will leave you with about 42” of useable fabric. We also recommend piecing your back with horizontal seams, instead of lengthwise, will save yardage. Long arm quilters like horizontal seams because it eliminates a bulky area down the center of your quilt when it is rolled up on their long arm frame. Using our previous example (Quilt: 99”x106” Back: 103”x110”), our 110” long quilt would require 3 widths of 45” quilting fabric that are at least 103” long. For our quilt you would need to purchase 8 5/8 yards of fabric (103 x 3 = 309” divided by 36” which equals 8.58 yards.
The east morning light is pouring into my dining room from the open door in this shot. It's mid-May, and me and my English sideboard are prepared for a new season. I'm still unprepared, though, for how quickly the seasons come and go. Last week I heard for the first time the saying that time is like a toilet paper roll. The closer to the end you get, the faster it runs out! As indelicate as that image is, I must say that at this stage I'm eye-balling just how many squares I have left! All this musing reminds me of lines from The Sheltering Sky. . . , "Because we don't know when we will die, we get to think of life as an inexhaustible well. Yet everything happens only a certain number of times, and a very small number really. How many more times will you remember a certain afternoon of your childhood, an afternoon that is so deeply a part of your being that you can't even conceive of your life without it? Perhaps four, five times more, perhaps not even that. How many more times will you watch the full moon rise? Perhaps 20. And yet it all seems limitless." Paul Bowles How many more times will I change up my sideboard? My mother-in-law kept the same arrangement in her living room for fifty years. She left it just as her mother arranged it for her FOR FIFTY YEARS! But I am a compulsive arranger. My son says the living room is changed every time he steps into the house. But I have left my doggies just as they were. I thought I would do an all white theme, but found I couldn't live without my brown transfer-ware. So I removed the darker pieces for the duration. And a little goes a long way, I find. I'm becoming like Oscar Wilde who said,"I find it harder and harder everyday to live up to my blue china!" (read: brown transfer-ware). And I always have seashells, though I live about as far inland in the high desert as you can get. But white shells are the perfect compliment for white china and this ancient Wedgewood pattern of creamware which I found a few pieces of while digging around in the usual digging around places. It's unmarked, do you know it? About a year ago I found this gem of a butter pot for ten dollars. The little cow makes me cry every time I see it. Who says money can't buy you happiness? Just out of sight to the right is an orphaned lid. My little biscuit jar has a country scene on the front. It's just like peeking into another place and time. (Maybe Brambly Hedge!) Gathered collections become more than the sum of their parts. They are like an eccentric family with their missing members, flaws, and scars bundled up together and living in harmony. Beautiful. Who wants an old tureen with a missing lid anyway? I say, "Come on in Tureen and make yourself to home!" (We might all lose our lids eventually.) Standing by for duty. Many of you agree that the graphics on the backs of china can be as pleasing (or more) than anything else. I like these plates better on the back than the front. More light and lyrical patterns inside square ironstone bowls. All the action going on inside this cupboard is almost more than I can bear! Eighteenth century homespun towels with crochet edges, including the one underneath everything, all originated in the same family. I always have bird's nests here and there in-house too. These are evocative of spring, but will stay all summer. I use acorns and quail eggs inside as well as small shells and anything else from nature that I find interesting. The open drawer is for bibs and napkins referred to in an earlier post. http://getcottage.blogspot.com/2010/04/anti-anxiety-lifestyle.html My granddaughters wear this antique bib. It's similar to a blouse with no arms and covers everything front and back. I wish I had a dozen. They would be simple to reproduce but I no longer have any such ambition. Great idea for you creative gals lurking out there! I have a serious love sickness for hand worked towels. Well--all kinds of white vintage towels. It's time to close the drawer on this post, but I wanted to share what I heard in the shop a few days ago. A woman of a certain age remarked how when she turned fifty she looked around at all the very nice linens and things she was "saving", even things given her when she married, and wondered if she didn't start using them NOW when was she going to? She didn't have time left to even wear them out! So out they all came to be used every day. My old friend Rebecca asked me recently didn't I worry that the little ones would break things? The sideboard is too high for the really short people, and the cupboards lock. The bigger visitors have learned respect. How many places are there left to do that? (And yes, like everywhere on the planet, sometimes things get broken, but it's most often Mr. C. that does it [just sayin' ]). "The weary Mole soon had his head on his pillow, in great joy and contentment. But ere he closed his eyes he let them wander round his old room, mellow in the glow of the firelight that played or rested on familiar and friendly things which had long been unconsciously a part of him. . . It was good to think he had this to come back to, this place which was all his own, these things which were so glad to see him again and could always be counted upon for the same simple welcome." Kenneth Graham, from the chapter Dulce Domum, The Wind in the Willows. Ciao! Thanks for stopping by! And check out My Romantic Home for Show & Tell Friday. All our yarns are ethically sourced. *** Please note that although I try to ensure that the product photos are true to life, colours may vary depending on your monitor or device. All my yarn is hand-dyed in small batches and variations between skeins should be expected.
