To discover once again the mythical city of Rome, the museum city, was the aim we had set ourselves for this short stay. This was our third visit and certainly not our last.
The shape and layout of the coffers of the Pantheon’s dome have been studied for centuries. The configuration of the coffers is governed by a complex design that is based on geometric-constructive laws yet to be defined. There is no recent and complete graphic restitution of the Pantheon in scientific publications. In this research, contemporary metric restitution techniques were employed to survey the dome’s soffit. The layout of the coffers and their relationships with the spherical surface were analysed according to the performed survey. Through a comparative analysis between the restitution model and the ideal model of the dome’s soffit, we can identify possible irregularities and the laws that govern the elaborated design of these elements.
Going back in time is sadly not possible; however, that doesn’t stop researchers from uncovering the secrets of the past. Each day they discover something new that shows what life was like hundreds of years ago. Unsurprisingly, there are large communities of scientists that carry out complex research to put the puzzle pieces together.
The Pantheon in Rome has been depicted in countless paintings and measured drawings. This paper considers how the building and its subsequent representations express meaning through elementary geometric symbols, patterns, and proportions. The author observes notable discrepancies between a sampling of measured plans from Sebastiano Serlio’s woodcut engravings in the Renaissance to current laser campaigns. She analyzes the different drawings for underlying geometric patterns. A pattern of rotated squares, in root-two proportion, appears consistently in the horizontal plan of each measured set and complements Mark Wilson Jones’s proposed scheme of a conjoined sphere and cube. This comparative method of analysis offers students and scholars of descriptive geometry a useful tool for interpretation.
