Returning to the matter of “saving bucks by creating your own birthday/greetings/happy whatever cards”, here I present you this super cute and totally cool idea for a handmade card decoration. These little kokeshi paper dolls are easy and fun to make and lend themselves to many different uses. Yay. One thing to keep in mind is that you will have to use some very bright and Japanese-ish looking paper in order to achieve the best results. For instance, you can use old wrapping paper with floral or geometric patterns. Obviously you can also use real (and effing expensive) origami and/or washi paper. Carte come queste sono perfette. Peccato siano difficili e spesso costose da reperire. Sfruttate i vostri amici giapponesi! This kind of washi paper would be perfect. Unfortunately it is also extremely expensive and hard to find in Italy. Capitalize on your Japanese friends! Innanzitutto vediamo i materiali: So, let's get started! Here's how to make these little kokeshis! As for the materials you will need: Per la testa e i capelli: Un cartoncino bianco circolare di circa 3 cm di diametro. For the head and the hair: A circle of white cardboard about 2-3 cm in diameter. A rectangle of white cardboard about 6mm wide and 6 cm long (although the length is not that important). A rectangle of black crepe paper about 3x5 cm for the fringe. A rectangle of black crepe paper about 5x7 cm for the hair. For the clothing: One rectangle of origami paper about 7x8 for the kimono One rectangle of the same origami paper about 7x8 for the arms One rectangle of contrasting origami paper about 3x5.5 cm for the obi One small rectangle of monochromatic paper about 5x1,5 for the “under kimono” (I don’t even know if that is an actual thing). Altro materiale: Forbici. Colla o scotch. Other materials: Scissors. Sticky tape or glue (but not the vinilic one). Pens to draw the face. Ok, I can see that mine is NOT monochromatic but I assure you that monochromatic is better. When I made this tutorial I did't have any valid alternative. Step 3) Fissiamo la striscia del "sotto kimono" dietro al collo e procediamo a incollarla sul davanti: Step 3) Glue the under kimono behind the neck, then fold together following the photos and glue on the front: 12 Step 4) Prepariamo un colletto per il kimono prendendo il foglio di carta colorata più grande e piegandolo di 1 cm verso la parte non colorata e riportando mezzo cm indietro: Step 4) Prepare the collar of our kimono: with the wrong side up, fold about 1cm of one end, then flip the paper over and fold about 0.5cm back over: 12 Step 5) Incolliamo la testa e il collo al kimono. Per creare il corpo seguite le istruzioni di piega mostrate nelle foto: Step 5) Tape the head and under-kimono collar into the middle of the kimono. To create the body follow the folding instructions shown in the photos: 12 34 Step 5) Si ripete la piega dal lato opposto: Step 5) Repete the folds on the opposite side: Oh yeah! Step 6) Now the Obi! First of all, flip the piece of "obi paper" over and fold over a few millimiters. This will create thickness and an illusion of fabric (that doesn't have white cutting marks): Step 7) Fissiamo l'Obi al kimono, in modo da coprire le pieghe fatte in precedenza, con un goccio di colla davanti e dietro o con una striscia di scotch sulla schiena. I capelli e le braccia copriranno questa parte: Step 7) Put the piece of “obi paper” around the kimono so that it covers the angled folds in the kimono. Glue or tape this at the back. The long hair and the arms will cover the tape later. Step 8) Glue the small piece of the crepe paper on the head to make a fringe. Make sure that the grain of the crepe is running down, like real hair. It should be glued about two-thirds down, leaving only one-third of the face free. NB. The lenght of the fringe is of the essence. You may want to leave more space for the face (at least one half of the round card) or variate on the classic straight fringe. Even though the final effect won't be ugly at all it will also convey a "non-Japanese" feeling. The authentic Japanese paper dolls usually have longe fringes with little space left for the face (as you can see here), while amatorial paper dolls often look like these ones: Carine ma non giapponesi Cute but not Japanese. Chiusa parentesi. Let's move on. Step 9) Per le braccia pieghiamo a metà il secondo rettangolo di carta colorata e sagomiamo le maniche tagliando come nella foto: Step 9) For the arms fold in half the second rectangle of origami paper and cut the sleeves as in the picture below: Step 10) Attacchiamo la bambola, leggermente decentrata, verso il braccio teso. Effettuiamo una piega col resto della carta per creare il braccio piegato: Step 10) Glue the sleeves to the doll, a little off-centre towards the open arm, then fold the other arm following the pictures: 123 Step 11) Finiamo i capelli fissando, dietro la testa, la striscia di carta crespa più lunga in modo che sporga circa un paio di cm dalla sommità. Pieghiamo a caramella e incolliamo l'avanzo sul retro della testa: Step 11) Let's finish the hair: glue or tape the back of the head onto the hair piece of paper so that there are couple of cm of paper at the top. Fold the hair to that it angles up to the middle then do the same on the other side. Twist the top of the hair and then fold it behind the head. Glue. Step 12) The doll is finished! If you want you can add eyes and mouth with pens or crayons like I did. In Japan you can find both versions. Those "faceless" look a bit more severe and adult while those with eyes and mouth look cuter and suitable for girls. Ad esempio queste: Do you like it? I filled my room with these and then I started to use them, glue to cards, as birthday/greeting cards. All my fridends like them eheh! The armless version (like the ones below), longer and thinner can also be used as a bookmark. Sarebbe bello avere tutta questa cari(ni)ssima carta giapponese. Peccato si trovi solo a prezzi proibitivi. Look at this incredible origami paper. For the wealthiest only. Buon divertimento! Have fun! Ps: I apologize for the mistakes. I would really appreciate it if could help me correct the post. Alice
