After completing my map projects last week, I found a few more brilliant ways to turn maps from blah to TADA! These ones, I came across on Etsy: via Etsy These are seating cards for wedding receptions. The name of the guest is printed in front of the card and the corresponding table number is at the back. They also double as book markers after the wedding. via Etsy Here are stickers made from maps with calligraphy, too! via Etsy Aren't these attractive? These are map star books. When opened, they look like this: via Etsy TADA! via Etsy And finally, cut-outs from maps {and very precise, I might add} that can be used for scrap booking or card making. I can just see cut-outs of trains, planes and automobiles to illustrate a vacation. See you tomorrow!

I have been very busy the last two weekends making paper art. First, the San Diego Origami Club met and we learned to make this wonderful box structure. Last weekend I participated in two Kumi Korf workshops. The first workshop was a whirlwind of 5 book/box structures. The second was a kinetic book structure that is housed in a lovely box. I am still finishing up the second workshop projects, but it was a wonderful weekend and my head is now swimming with ideas. Below are some pictures of what I made as well as the diagram I created for the origami box structure. I hope you enjoy. -Gina Origami Box Instructions for the folded box Kumi Korf Workshop book Another Kumi Korf workshop structure. The outside of this structure. "Hole in My Heart" structure. I still need to cover the top and bottom sections with decorative paper. Configuration 1 of the above structure. Slots will house small books. Configuration 2 of the above structure. I can't wait to finish. I would like to thank Kumi for sharing her talents, humor and amazing structures with the participants of this San Diego Book Arts workshop.

Along with the straight up Washi tape peel and stick style notebook covers which need no instruction, I also whipped up this pretty one and thought I'd share the how to with you, I love the look of woven anything and paper? well it just looks so cute using maps. You'll need two pieces of a Map/Atlas etc that have a mix of watery and land mass areas to give a mix of colours. I chose one piece with solely land and the other was mostly water. Mark up strips on the opposite side you want to use to avoid ugly black marks. So that you can read the name places you'll want one map piece to have horizontal strips and one to have vertical strips my strips measure 1/2 inch wide and long enough to wrap around a mini composition book from top to bottom (vertical pieces obv) and front to back (horizontal pieces)leaving an inch around all sides. Next I weighted the bottom of the Vertical pieces down with some cans and started weaving When you've woven enough to cover the book front and back, add some tape to the bottom of the woven pieces leaving enough of the tape to be able to fold over and seal the ends together. Repeat for the top and sides. When you've taped each side and folded the edge of the tape over to the back, you should be left with a piece of woven Atlas 'fabric' you can now use this to cover your Composition book. Layer Double sided tape to completely cover the front and back, making sure the spine has tape adhered to it also. Excuse my Blue thumbs! Then lay the back of the book on the woven Atlas 'fabric' and take the woven piece and wrap it around the book pressing down to make sure it sticks. Trim around the edges. After trimming you will have some loose pieces that stick up, glue them down then put notebook under a pile of books to make sure all the pieces properly stuck to the cover. Trim off the excess and enjoy your recycled Atlas/Map notebook. Can't find vintage Maps but would like one of your own? buy your notebook here via Etsy.

‘Map art calls into question the map’s service to the state, the nature of the map’s propositions, and its use of indexing systems to define meaning. Map art doubts the certainties of the map and this creates a space for rethinking the map, for unmaking it; this endows it with the potential to free maps at last from the tyranny of the state.’ Denis Wood, Writer and Map Theorist See below for a PDF of how to create a Turkish map fold

Five of the best paper sculptures Today on the blog is all about paper. To start, here is a round up of five of the best paper art. Some of these are fascinating and very intricate. Some are also tiny - I am so drawn to tiny sculptures and intricate pieces. I think it ties into my love of books such as The Indian in The Cupboard and The Borrowers as a child - these tiny sculptures and intricate works almost promise of another world, a miniature one within our own that we can only understand through glimpses. I think I also like the intensity that paper-only art creates, when you only have one medium to work with there is no covering up with a splash of paint or a daub of glue; a wrong fold in an origami work and the whole piece could fall apart.
