This is an unusual paper doll as it is a doll that came in its own box for storage and had a drawer in the bottom for keeping her clothes. There was a write up about her in the same magazine and I …
I love late 1800's and early 1900's paper dolls; especially "mechanical" paper dolls. These are paper dolls that come in "parts" that you piece together with brads, eyelets or other fastening techniques. They can be called a variety of names by collectors such as: "jumping jacks", articulated, mechanical, jointed, movable, dancing... paper dolls. I personally collect the German made L&B articulated ballerina an prima donna dolls and in my search for those I keep locating images of Pantins from France. Vintage Sheet of French "Jumping-Jack" Pantin - Paper Dolls There were a series of Pantin "Dancing-Jack-Puppet" dolls produced in France in the mid-late 1800's by d'Epinal that I keep running across that have an interesting look to them. Assembled correctly, these dolls would "dance" - it required both the used of attaching the limbs of each figure and then a process of attaching string between the limbs so they could then be put in motion. See more about Jumping-Jacks HERE and on string assembly HERE ***** Update 10-09-12 I've created a basic "Pantin" assembly sheet. I hope you find it helpful in making your figures "dance" Remember - If you are going to make a "dancing" version you need to make sure your doll is on very sturdy materal like a light weight chip board so that the parts don't rip or tear when you work it. Basic Assembly instructions for making a Pantin paper doll "dance" ***** I can't say that many of vintage pantins intrigue me enough to collect the originals; however there are a variety of different ones out on the web to look at. Some of them are of a nice enough quality that you can use them for art projects; while others are only sufficient for reference like several of the sheets I'm posting today. Here are a few of the sheets I've found over the years on the Internet. French Pantins - Pierrot, Chinese, Turkish, Harlequin Depending on where and when they were published these dolls can appear individually or in sets. The Turkish man seen on the lower left is not a figure I've run across very often so I found this sheet interesting due to his appearance on it. Pantins - Pierrot & Columbine The Pierrot is a standard French pantomime character and I've seen him in several versions. I'm not a big fan of clowns or pantomime so this image usually "creeps" me out a bit. Columbine - a standard character in the Commedia dell'Arte. She is Harlequin's mistress. These characters have been produced in many different versions so if you choose to become a collector there is more then one of each character to chase down. This is a different version of Columbine and is numbered #1344 in the d'Epinal line This image has recently been offered on eBay as have the two Pierrot's that are posted below. I believe the seller is asking for a starting bid of @ $80 on each. Pierrot #1345 by d'Epinal Female Pierrot #1346 by d'Epinal I find the female Pierrot to be less "creepy" in appearance than the males. Pierrot & Pierrette - Chinese Dancers This sheet shows both a male and female Pierrot on the top portion and a pair of Chinese dancers below. For some reason it is more common to see the male and less common to see the female but in this sheet we get to see them both. I have seen the Chinese dancers in a few slightly different color version and if you look at the sheet I listed towards the top of this post you will see a slightly different version of the Chinese Man. I think these two images are very attractive and have even been so luck as to purchase them in rubber stamp form from Mad Rat Rubber. Mad Rat Rubber has all four of these vintage "Pantins" from the above shown sheet in rubber at - HERE They also have the male and female Spanish dancer and Cavalier from the sheet shown below. Titi - Spanish Dancers - Mousquetaire - Bobeche - Menetrier #1371 by d'Epinal Not only did d'Epinal produce their characters individually and in sets they reproduced them a variety of times over the years they were in production. The above sheet shows #1371 while the exact same set below shows them to be #845 Titi - Spanish Dancers - Mousquetaire - Bobeche - Menetrier #845 by d'Epinal I believe this to be one of the more attractive sets of Pantins from d'Epinal mainly due to the female Spanish dancer in the set. She's just too cute. Polichinelle and Harlequin - this one was found HERE Polichinelle - French for the Commedia dell'Arte character Pulcinella aka "Punch" He is a popular in French theater - a mocking and comical hunchback; that is easily spotted by his big hooked nose and his protruding belly. The Pantins I've seen of him, usually show him playing an instrument of some kind. Harlequin - comic servant characters from the Italian "Commedia dell'Arte". D'Epinal made several version of this character as they did with many others and he is most easily spotted by the diamond pattern on his outfits and usually wears a mask. The Columbine character is his mistress. Pantins - Jocrisse & Pere Cassandre - Dancing Indians d'Epinal #1362 Jocrisse - the "loon" is a a harmless but stupid character in theater. Cassandre - I'm unsure of who this character "Father Cassandre" is The bottom two are "Dancing Indians" another version of Jocrisse and Pere Cassandre This is a different printing version of the Pantins - Jocrisse and Pere Cassandre from what was seen int the sheet posted above this one. I believe most of these printed sheets to be from later in the 1800's and the printing technique seems to fairly "rough" with smeared colors and a low grade quality of paper and processing. Some are of better quality then others; such as the images that are printed one to a page; however occasionally I discover sheets that really stand out from the others. Here are two examples of Epinal Pantins that are of a much higher artistic quality. I discovered them - HERE (A search for "Pantin" should pull these up if the link does not take you directly to the images.) Pantins - Danseurs Bretons (British Dancers) Pantins Danseurs Chinois et Turcs- Dancers Chinese and Turks This is probably my favorite sheet of "Pantins" discovered so far. I would not mind having a high resolution version or even an original sheet for my collection. Considering this and the sheet above it are located at the French National Library it may be a tall order to fill but one never knows what will appear on the web. I think these would be great ornaments on a Christmas tree, don't you? Although I don't have this lovely set of Chinese and Turkish dancers in a quality that would make for good crafting, I do have several others that I was able to "clean up" and I will be bringing those to you in the near future. Be on the look out for fun "Jumping- Jack" dolls coming soon.

Welcome to the first night of several revealing all the NEW PRODUCTS we have developed for 2014 release at Craft Hobby and Stitch International Trade show that starts on Sunday. Tonight we show you all things new from Linda Brown. The history to this Eclectica³ {Lin Brown} collection originates from when Lin took a City and Guilds course in 2012 which really inspired her to utilise fabric a lot more in the art she creates. You will see this in some of her stunning samples below how she has done that of late. Last year, the 3 stamp sets we released were rubber representations of stamps she hand-carved, to create flowers for feature pieces in her fabric creations. At the same time we released 5 die sets, so you could die cut flowers, butterly, branch, leaves to add dimension. We also released 6 co-ordinating chipboard sets calle Eclectica³ Chipboard Shapes (flowers, branches etc) that are fun to use with all of Lin's other elements, again, for dimension and texture. In the summer months of 2013, she added a fourth stamp set, with much smaller elements to create more detailed backgrounds. {NEW} Rubber Stamps So for 2014, we have added a lot of new things to Lin's Eclectica³ Series. As we have previously in recent weeks, she now has 2 'quote plates' : ELB06, ELB07, PS002, FFLB1 by Leandra ELB05, ELB07, PS003, FFLB1 by Leandra So what have we NOT yet told you about? Well quite a lot I do admit! Lets start with the stamps. With script becoming an important part of Lin's work, we felt fine detail stamps, in traditional PaperArtsy style, with script etc laid on top, would perfectly compliment the quote plates Lin has created. Remember, her flowers heads etc do not have identical petals, so the trick is to die cut the shape first, match the notch, and then stamp the image over the top marking the petal on the EZ mount side of your stamp to the 'notch'. Another great tip with the branch, is to snuggle the rubber stamp into the die, and then press it onto the acrylic Flexi block 'handle' now the shape of the stamp will perfectly match the die cut paper. You can see we have made 2 branches, so you can stamp the front OR the back of the die cut piece of card. Lin's dies are amazingly sharp. Our manufacturer makes them from stainless steel, which is a higher grade of steel than other dies on the market. They stay sharper, and the blade feels like you could almost cut yourself on it (be careful). We love these dies. The blades are quite deep, so you will have no problem cutting Grunge-paper for example. These dies will go through any die cutting machine, just adjust your sandwich to whatever you would normally use for spellbinder style dies. Some of you may have already noticed the stamps have 2 styles; with borders, or without borders. The stamps with borders will fit perfectly within the area of your die cut shape. See below ELB07 by Lin Brown The stamps without a black line border have been designed to be slightly LARGER than your die cut shape. SO in the sample below, you can see the image goes all the way to the edge of the die cut shape on the tulip layers. ELB08 by Lin Brown This means you can stamp an image and see a nice design across the entire shape. It's just another way to give you different options. You could, for example, stamp the larger image in a light colour ink, then come over the top with the border image in black as a kind of feature. I'm sure you will think of many ways to use these stamps. It's all about texture, layers and versatility. {NEW} Limited Edition Set of 4 paints But that's not all. Lin also has a Limited Edition Paint set. She developed the colours, and as you would imagine, they are the typical warm, autumnal shades that she adores. FFLB1 Chartreuse is translucent, but I'm wondering if we should make the labels for Tikka and Seaweed semi-opaque too, they have slightly more coverage than a translucent. Tikka is a bit like pumpkin soup, except more orange, and a much higher coverage. Chutney with one layer you see warm raisin tones, but as you add layers, its more of a mahogany brown. These are all wonderful for building interest, depth and warmth in projects. {NEW} PaperArtsy Stencils And, yes, you're eyes don't deceive, Lin has also designed stencils, 6 fabulous designs, again, designed to work as layers in whatever project you tackle. I'm sure you'll agree, its wonderful to have elements like this that all work together so perfectly with our Grunge Paste, as well as Lin's stamps, and now her own paints. Various stencils with GP, ELB paint by Linda Cain PS003 by Lin Brown PS003 stencil with GP and Frescos by Leandra ELB Stencils, Fresco paints and MN stamps by Linda Cain PS004 by Lin Brown PS004 by Lin Brown PS004 by Lin Brown I'm sure after all that excitement you would love to see what the designers have been up to in the last few weeks, secretly beavering away with all things new! Lin Brown of course has managed (with one working arm since surgery) to heroically put together some gorgeous samples. Lin has designed her stencils to work in tandem with her stamps, be it a background, or a flower layer, and some of the stencils like PS003 and PS004 have patterns that are used on top of others. For example, in the first sample below, the flower petals are stenciled in French Roast, and the spots are stenciled over the top to fit perfectly with Nougat Paint. PS004, PS005 by Lin Brown ELB07 by Lin Brown PS002, PS004 by Lin Brown PS003 by Lin Brown ELB07, PS004 by Lin Brown PS002, PS003, PS005 by Lin Brown Next up is Joanne Wardle with her fabulous minimalist style. She always manages some striking Clean and Simple cards, a refreshing approach. Carol Quance has been using the paints to great effect with another new product to be revealed later in the week! Sue Carrington created these striking flower cards using the stamp and dies sets in numerous ways. Jo Myhill despite a crazy few weeks in her life, Jo has managed to create some goodness for you to see too. Linda Cain ...could not resist working with Lin's products once stuff fell in her lap, and has literally gone into art-hibernation creating all kinds of lush things, like this gorgeous 'gal' with her flower crown. Please take some time to visit all the blog links above for more samples and ideas from each designer about how they have used this new series of products. You will be amazed! All Eclectica³ Lin Brown stamps will be available via your local stamp store in the coming weeks. Shops can order online direct from PaperArtsy now, or in person at the Craft Hobby and Stitch International Trade Show, NEC Birmingham, Feb 16-18. PaperArtsy is stand A42, situated as usual in the back left hand corner of the main hall, with a coffee cart nearby. Shipping of all new products starts immediately: Wednesday Feb 19th, 2014. More than just a gallery
I used these favorite colors to tie together a small doll bed quilt and a little antique chest of drawers given to the doll family several years ago by Jack. He found it at the Boerne Antique show and surprised me with it. Friend Elaine made and dressed the small Izannah type doll, a precious gift to me, and her mother Martha made the small braided rug in the mix of browns and blues. Both of these women are superb fiber artists. To make the little quilt, I sewed extra brown strips around an early Log Cabin square, added a frame of soft blue, and bound and backed it with a deeper blue green. Whether hooking, quilting or dressing a doll, the play of several fabrics well chosen is always greater than the sum of them individually. A quilter's play of fabric bit against bit is a never ending game, like endless hands of solitaire to a card player. The results are ever changing, ever intriguing. My friend for 40 some odd years, Linda B. and I used to sit on the floor and play with fabrics like two little girls playing a game of jacks. Edyth in Sunny Texas
