This is the first Paragon butterfly teacup and saucer to come my way, and now I understand what all the fuss is about: Everything about it is exquisite, form, color, and construction. As to form and construction, a few features are worth noting, beginning with the fact that the butterfly is not applied but built into the body of the cup. As a result, it makes for a perfectly durable handle. Another noteworthy feature of the form is that the gentle ruffles along the edge of the cup continue into the bowl with the effect that the interior of the cup appears to undulate. The coloration is subtle and whimsical: soft aquamarine complements the muted pink, and both colors find their way into the butterfly. With a backstamp that dates its manufacture to between 1939 and 1949, the cup is in outstanding condition, with no chips, flea bites, cracks, hairlines, or color loss. With the exception of some very faint crazing on the base of the cup, two very minor imperfections belong to its original firing: the color of the cup's base is uneven, and some pin-point-sized spots appear under the glaze at the bottom of the cup's interior (see photos).
