The Military stool is part of Gerrit Rietvelds Military Series, designed in 1923 for the Catholic Military Hostel in Utrecht (the Netherlands). The avant-garde design and iconic lines of the chair represent Rietveld’s basic principles as a member of the De Stijl art movement, which he joined in 1919. Used nuts and bolts for the first time instead of wooden dowels, Rietveld developed a series of very solid designs. The military furniture, which is characterized by the use of square cross ties, is produced in various colors, whereby the tops are always painted in a contrasting color. The seat of the Military stool is made of oak veneered plywood that is painted white. The frame is painted in black and the end are finished in the same white color as the seat. Dutch designer Sabine Marcelis placed this version of the Military stool in her award winning Dutch Pavilion at the Cannes film festival 2017 (photo 4).

Fredrik Paulsen’s work, both as a designer and as a co-founder of Stockholm’s brilliant Örnsbergsauktionen is shaking the foundations of what you think Scandinavian design ought to be. “Here you are taught to produce work for the everyman,” Paulsen says. “It’s the legacy of IKEA: Good design for everyone. But if your work doesn’t really fit into mass production and it is not intended for it, then there is no platform or venue to show it.” It was this void that led Paulsen and his friends and fellow designers Simon Klenell and Kristoffer Sundin to stage their first auction during last year’s Stockholm’s Design Week. They invited contemporaries — some they knew, others they only knew of — to submit diverse, self-made works that went beyond the cookie-cutter forms they’d grown tired of, and put them up for bidding. It paid off.
Gerrit Rietveld designed this chair in 1923 for the Juryfreie Kunstschau, an art show based in Berlin. It was originally made from oak or beech panels, but as a pioneer in simply constructed furniture his furniture has encouraged DIY-ers to try for themselves. This version seems to have been made in the last 30 years...
