About this Reading Lesson: The lesson statement for this reading lesson is, "Readers identify the part of speech of an unknown word to help them solve its meaning." Students will identify and cite three unfamiliar words from their reading, determine the part of speech for each word, and explain their reasoning. What is the purpose of the Grab & Go Reading Lessons? You’re not always searching for a big reading unit or bundle of reading lessons. Sometimes you’re just looking for a single lesson on a specific topic to fill a curriculum gap. Other times you may want to reteach a difficult concept in new way, but you’re lacking the time or energy to make new teaching materials. The Grab & Go Reading Lessons were created to help ELA teachers break away from spending hours piecemealing reading lessons together and are there to supplement the curriculum you already use. Another great perk of the “Grab & Go Reading Lessons” are they go outside the norm of the same old general reading lessons and bring a unique element and perspective to reading instruction. Regardless of the book or text students are reading and the instructional format you’re using, these lessons are adaptable and ready to go. What is included in each Grab & Go Reading Lesson? Each reading lesson is aligned to a specific reading standard. A detailed lesson plan to walk students through the gradual release of responsibility (learning target, modeling (I do), have-a-go (we do), application (you do), share) to teach a specific reading strategy. PowerPoint/Google Slides presentation to outline the reading lesson for students. The presentation form of each lesson is a great visual to take students through the gradual release of responsibility. The presentation helps the teacher stay on track and cues students into the different pieces of the lesson. Question prompts specific to each reading lesson’s skill to use in reading conferences and/or small group reading instruction (guided reading, literature circles, reading strategy groups) to reinforce the concept being taught. A small group discussion guide and guided format that will allow students to independently gather in small groups and discuss questions related to the reading lesson and their book/text. Prompts/questions and stopping point ideas to use during an Interactive Read Aloud intended to frontload the specific type of thinking students will need to replicate during the reading lesson. A formative assessment (Exit Ticket) to use during the “application” portion of the lesson. The formative assessment is uniquely designed for the exact reading lesson to engage students in independent learning. A formative assessment rubric to assess students’ proficiency on the reading standard and reading skill being addressed is also included. A version of the formative assessment (Exit Ticket) with sentence starters typed directly into the Exit Ticket is included to help all or some students with sentence-level writing. Modeling of each formative assessment is completed to be able to show students what "Meets Proficiency" from the proficiency rubric looks like. The modeling is completed based off a popular middle school fiction book. A reference sheet for students to keep in a reference section of a 3-ring binder, glue into a Reader’s Notebook, put in a reference section of Google Classroom, and/or the reference sheet can be turned into a classroom anchor chart. The information on the reference sheet is also included in the PowerPoint/Google Slides presentation and referenced in the lesson plan to introduce the reading lesson concept to students. Resources and teacher guides to help you along the way (Citing Textual Evidence Student Reference Sheet, Interactive Read Aloud Instruction Guide, Assessing Oral Reading Fluency Handout, Reading Conference Guide, Small Group Reading Assessment Guide, Reading Lesson Assessment Guide) All materials included in this reading lesson come in a PDF and editable Microsoft Word version so teachers can use the materials in a way that best suits their teaching style and students’ needs. The lesson presentation and formative assessment (Exit Ticket) comes in a Google Slides/Google Doc format for ease of use with Google Classroom.
