Distinguishing between active and passive voice can be difficult for students, and creating sentences in a given voice even harder still. This board game which uses the same board as my Modal Verbs Board Game (different directions in the center), gives students the opportunity to practice forming sentences in the active and passive voice. Turn Directions: 1. Roll the die. 2. Move your piece the number of squares indicated. 3. Look at the words or picture in the square. Make a sentence about the word or picture using the corresponding voice. (odd roll = active, even roll = passive) Example: roll = 3 square = school The janitor painted the school white. 4. If the sentence is grammatically correct, stay on the square. If it is not correct, return to your previous square. The game can be adapted to allow students to practice converting sentences from active to passive and the reverse. Simply require students to convert the previous student's sentence into the opposite voice before taking his/her own turn. A second game board is included because though we mostly encourage students to write in the active voice, it's also important for them to develop proficiency with the passive voice. Turn Directions: 1. Roll the die. 2. Move your piece the number of squares indicated. 3. Look at the words or picture in the square. Make a sentence about the word or picture using the passive voice. Example: square = school The school has been painted a bright white. 4. If the sentence is grammatically correct, stay on the square. If it is not correct, return to your previous square. To play this game, you will need to provide students with 1 game piece per student (token, mini eraser, milk jug lid...) and 1 number cube per group. The game pieces and dice are NOT included with the download. Before playing, print the game boards, one for each group. I recommend laminating them for durability. In class, pass out the supplies and let the students play. For more practice with active and passive voice: Active or Passive Voice with Dr. Seuss Task Cards
