"Enjoy the little things in life because one day you will look back and realize they were the BIG things" Na een tijdje van afwezigheid nu eindelijk weer eens een post.

My Stars Inspiration for my star on the left was the little star on the right. My friend Missy gave it to me. More inspiration came from a Better Homes and Gardens, Do It Yourself Issue, Winter 2005 page 32 and 33. Check out the wonderful fabrics used in these stars! The article was about Debra Danall's beautiful home, and not about how to make them. I could not find a pattern for these stars, I searched and searched and searched. Did I say I searched? I had memories of my French Canadian grandmother making them back in the 1960's. Short of taking apart my little star, and I couldn't bear to do that! I finally made my own crafty version here , in February 2011, using scraps of felted wools, quilt batting, cardboard, and fusible webbing. Check my Etsy shop for templates, and fabric kits when I have them available. Here's my first star, again, in my entry hall. Do you notice the penny rug underneath? Check my complete tutorial for that rug on my YouTube channel. Part 5 freshly posted today, by the way. So, just today I was chatting with my penny rug friend Cee, about these stars. Now, just look at what she turned up for me! This is a beautiful museum piece. They call it a Victorian Patchwork Pincushion. Wow, another friend gifting me (so to speak) with a star! Victorian Patchwork Pincushion or, a Patchwork Star. This particular star is vintage 1890-1910 circa. Check how the pins are for decoration, with beads threaded onto each pin. Some of the points are missing their large gold bead. See the sequin decoration at the inside intersection. Do you notice one other more important item? The pieces are triangles and not diamonds This star has a completely different construction than mine. Well, a diamond halved, is a triangle. So this won't be hard to do, I see another tutorial in my future. The description on the museum website reads: "Decorative Victorian star shaped pin cushion, consisting of 60 individual silk and velvet covered triangular card templates that create a three dimensional star. There are pins with large beads at the points, and smaller blue beads with pins along the edges. This type of pin cushion was popular in the late Victorian period, and many were produced as decorative ornaments for the parlour rather than having a practical use." So, now that I'm armed with a new search phrase I can't be stopped! I found this photo of a pattern, on Flickr referring to a book by Caroline Green called "Victorian Crafts Revived". I've ordered a copy, so I'll let you know if the pattern is actually in the book. From the full version of this photo on Flickr, and I don't want to inadvertently infringe on a copyright of the book, with a reproduced the pattern, but there are simple directions using glue, fabric and no batting. Other than the way the fabric is attached, the way I do it is the basic way. (my granny didn't have fusible webbing, but she had glue, and she had thread) If you find your way to this photo taken from Caroline's book, on Flickr you will see the pattern. Quilters share this method for a 3D star, check out Kindred Quilts' blog here for some fun colour variations! We've been sharing links! I never thought I could write a post so long about a quilted star, but there's more! Thank you again to Cee, she found this eBay listing today. Maybe someone out there has this pattern, another method, or some photos to share? Remember, we're all stars! January 2019 Edit*** I am learning more as I hear from folks who write to me. Mathematically this is a rhombic hexecontahedra, read the story of Spikey. A Giramundo Happiness Star? Or? Where does it originate from?

Lots of photos following, so brace yourself. I decided to do a CQ block - in pink, monochromatic (mostly) - using all of the stitches I have learned in TAST so far plus a couple of extras. This is the resulting block. Notice I did not use one single bead! You have no idea how hard that was for me to avoid the temptation. Really! This is the naked block I started out with. Close-up of the center floral motif. First, let me point out I added some sheer floral printed fabric over a couple of the shiny sections. This one is gathered slightly. I left some of the satin show along the seam. This is a little darker area from the sheer and is over a darker pink. Again, the satin shows along the buttonhole stitch area. I will list the stitches from top to bottom rows on each of the following close-ups. Cretan, French knot, knotted Cretan, buttonhole wheel (1/2), chain, French knot, lazy daisy/detached chain: French knot, Herringbone (both light pink and dark pink rows), Algerian Eyelet, fern leaf: This is kind of mixed up, but there are SRE petal stitch flowers, lazy daisy flowers, French knots, bullion rose and stitch, stem stitch rose and stem stitch, spider web rose: Web is straight stitch with couched connections; spider is whipped wheel with a little satin stitching over body and straight stitch for extending legs: Basque, scroll stitch, butterfly chain, French knots and lazy daisy (detached chains), straight stitch, up and down buttonhole: (From left to right in pie-shaped section) - French knot, buttonhole wheel (1/4), lazy daisy, straight stitch, French knot, running stitch, crossed buttonhole, bonnet: (butterfly) satin stitch, chain stitch, Fly 'Y' stitch; (below butterfly and in no particular order) French knots, wheat ear, straight, lazy daisy, feather stitch (bottom): Wheat ear, back stitch: (lace is added) Barred chain, half chevron, oyster, chain, buttonhole: Chain (3 rows), zig zag chain, Palestrina, cable chain, Chevron: There! I think that should be at least 35 unless I left out a seam somewhere. I you don't get close to the same count, let me know. This was so much fun and I will likely do it again, using my tags for reference.

A patchwork textile piece made with tiny fabric squares. Bright cheerful colours like a handful of jelly beans! I love making patchworks pieces especially from tiny shapes and scraps. The patchwork is mounted on 16 cm square mount board which is firm enough to stand on a shelf on its own or it can be framed. The patchwork itself is approx 9 x 9 cm. Hand sewn. Thank you for looking!

"Stitch a sweet needle book from the scraps you can't part with. The pattern includes templates and full instruction for a palm size needle book with 4 pages including the cover and heart at the center. The little book will certainly hold your pins and needles and tools or it could tell a story, mark an occasion, like a birth or anniversary, or be a sort of travel journal, the pages filled with little things found along the way and saved."
The mock up of a quilt above uses a LOT of scrap squares. There's a lot of sewing 2.5 inch squares together, but it's just 2 blocks and it's pretty

After some fiddling and cursing I managed to finish and stuff my little hexie pincushion (see Marina's blog). And then made another one! They are very cute and quite addictive, so I expect more will soon appear. And the other side. I can't show the back of the blue one as it may hint at who I'm sending it to. My other Mother's Day treat arrived today. This gorgeous Quiltmania book by Carolyn Konig. I haven't opened it yet. I'm savouring it, waiting for a quiet moment so I can immerse myself in her beautiful quilts. Carolyn has even autographed inside the cover. Better get back to my Irish Circles quilt before I open that book I think! The one on the front is very tempting. Happy stitching, Susan x
