I am sharing two simple rules on how to mix prints and patterns like a pro, so that you can pull them off with confidence.

Mixing textures is just mixing fabrics and it creates so much interest in a basic outfit. If you want to be bold and mix patterns, the best bet is to start by mixing textures. Patterned Fabric Combinations || Fabric Mix and Match Patterns and Colors
Do you love the look of mixed patterns but are too scared? Have you been mixing and matching for a while and are now stuck in a rut with the same patterns? Well, look no further because we can help! Mixing and matching patterns is a great way to make the best use of every item in your closet and throw your own unique personality into every outfit. Get some inspiration below for new and fun ways to mix and match! Treat Leopard or Animal Print Like a Solid I know. I know. I love animal print. But this is why! Treat your leopard prints like a solid. They go with everything. Find an adventurous pattern you would like to try and throw it on with a little leopard. You’ll look sexy and stylish! Black and White Prints Always Go Together The rules of fashion are never black and white, but this one is: black and white prints will ALWAYS go together! If you’re a beginning and not sure where to start, or if you want a sleek classic look, find two of your favorite patterns in black and white. You’ll knock everyone’s socks right off! What’s lovely about this technique is black and white prints can be combined with so many other things, making it a basic when mixing and matching. Add a Variety of Sizes of Patterns When in doubt: just make sure your patterns have a variety of patterns. If you have a large floral, pair it with a small polka dot. If you have a large polka dot, throw on a small stripe. If you have a large buffalo plaid, pair it with a smaller animal print. Adding variety helps define different features in each piece, giving you a truly unique design that will compliment your body and show your beautiful, stylish personality! Choose Prints with a Common Color If you’re not sure whether two prints can go together, see if they have a common color. This color connects and compliments the pieces together. It makes them a cohesive unit. Now, this can be any color: neon green, electric blue, baby pink, or royal purple. It can also be as subtle as a small flower on a floral or a single stripe in a top. That common color will make it seem like the prints were made for each other! Mix Prints with a Similar Saturation (Pastels and Pastels or Neon and Neon) As you’re adventuring into pattern mixing, look for prints that have similar saturation. This means that if you have a pattern with neon, stick with neon colors in your other pattern. The same goes for pastels, bright colors, muted colors, or anything else in your closet. They can be different colors, but the neon or pastel saturation will give your outfit a cohesive feel. Choose Two Prints and Add a Third Neutral Print or Complimentary Color Now, this is for those with an adventurous spirit looking to take their mixing and matching to the next level. Choose two prints like you normally would, but then add a third print that has a neutral or complimentary color. This is where animal print would work perfectly as a third pattern because it’s a neutral! Or, maybe you want stripes, polka dots, and plaid. Easily mix them together by making sure at least two of them have a common or complimentary color. Here, the sky is the limit! Include a Solid to Ground the Outfit As you get into the more adventurous pairings, try to include a solid to ground the outfit. Learn the basics of print mixing!
A few weeks ago I cleaned out and organized my closet. I probably do this about once or twice a year and every time I come to the same conclusion: I have too many clothes! Purging unwanted items from my closet and organizing the ones I want to keep does make me realize that I should "shop my closet" more and make use of the many fabulous things I already own instead of buying new things. So, for this outfit, I reached way back and found my J. Crew silk "Punk Floral" blouse from about five years ago. This is one of my favorite J. Crew prints for obvious reasons. If you missed out on it, there's actually a popover blouse in the same exact print from Nordstrom! It's also a part of their Anniversary Sale that ends today, so if you want it, now is your chance to snag it for a good price! I paired my "old school" "Punk Floral" blouse with these tie waist gingham shorts from Target. I have worn these shorts more than just about any other pair this summer, so they were definitely worth the $15 I spent on them in the spring! While these particular shorts are unfortunately no longer available, I am linking to some similar gingham shorts below.
