So lately I've been obsessing over capelets! I keep drooling over vintage dresses with matching capelets made of velvet or chiffon or wool, attached or separate, in all variations. Partly what I love about them is their versatility and wide use in fashion from Victorian times to the 30s to the 50s and more. I even ended up making one to go with my Christmas dress, which was sort of a disaster but more on that in a future post. :-) Here are some of the lovelies I found on Pinterest! This last one is actually a pattern you can get from Decades of Style, and I have to say I'm extremely tempted. I love the buttons, the fitted bodice in combination with the capelet, the color of the drawing, just everything about it! Looking forward to adding more capelets to my wardrobe eventually, and I'm sure I'll keep pinning inspiration as I find it in the meantime. If you'd like to follow me on Pinterest, I'm here. :-)
I finally finished the babette blanket! I did a lot of learning on this project, but now feel confident that I can tackle a big project and actually finish it (2 months from start to finish). I worked only two rows of border in charcoal grey as that seemed enough, but I may add another one - what do you think?
This is a folding fan with blossom themed design. The size of this piece makes it perfect to carry in your handbag and use anywhere when it's really hot! What can you do with a hand fan or when to use it? - When it's too hot outside: summer weddings, parties, events, tennis matches, etc. - To be a fashion queen! - To send secret messages!!! (For example: Fully open the hand fan = "Wait for me"; Move the hand fan around the cheek = "I love you") - As decorations to hang on a wall or display - To dance flamenco, olé! The hand fan is made of natural wood, lacquer several times with water-based lacquer (so the wood becomes nice to the touch) and white polyester fabric, which I decorate with a decoupage technique using paper napkins, fixed with lacquer. All the materials I use are water-based (odorless and eco-friendly) and I guarantee durability. Measurements: (width x height) Open: 17 x 9 inches (43 cm x 23 cm) Closed: 1.6 x 9 inches (4 cm x 23 cm)
Because just "simply adorable" does not effing cut it anymore.

I borrowed two great sewing books at my local library this year (multiple times). All-around Sewing Reference Note: Same book, different editions: 1961 and 1970 (they removed the tag-line). The 1970 edition was available in a metal binder version, see below. Better homes & Gardens Sewing Book (1961) What's I found cool inside: The book shows five different ways to make a sheer overdress with an opaque inner slip that also formed its own foundation garment. The instructions included details on how to construct the inner corselet for each dress. The construction is a little different depending on how the outer sheer dress was to be attached to the inner slip. Drafting and Patternmaking Designing Your Own Dress Patterns (1951) Designing Dress Patterns Third Ed. (1971) by Helen Nicol Tanous. Check out some of the styles I could create from this book (more at the link above): Examples of drafting projects Her method of moving darts is probably no different than many other guides, but her variations are what I love. The book shows things that they did when designing clothes in the 1940-50s that they don't do anymore in home sewing patterns. Besides the Advanced Vogue designer patterns the goal nowadays is easy quick sewing, with a minimum of custom details. I want my own copies. Onward...new mission! Update: Just ordered them both from Alibris!!

I simply adore harlequin floors. I have one in my kitchen that I have loved for years. I want one in the foyer of my next house! The harlequin pattern originated 400 years ago on Italy's theatrical stages, where performers who had honed their acts on the street would engage in improvisational comedy. Harlequin was a "servant" who wore brightly colored diamond-patterned tights and a mask. The pattern has been associated with clowns ever since. There is something altogether comical about this design, though it can also be quite classic. Thanks to the history that is mentioned above, these diamonds are now something of a sophisticated design. The overall design looks particularly spectacular when it is used as flooring. Furniture painted in a harlequin pattern is also popular. I am so late to the game and I feel like everyone in the sewing community has made the Sapporo Coat except me, but hey, better late than never right?I fell in love with this jacket so fast, I made two in TWO days! Though it may take time, the Heirloom Shawl is a beautiful and rewarding knit. This lace wedding shawl pattern is a classic that is sure to be handed down from generation to generation. The light, lovely design would look beautiful with any color sock weight yarn, though we especially love it in the white as shown for a heartwarming bridal gift.
